Day 144 - 09/24/2007
It is just over 2 weeks since we returned home from Portugal. The major news in that time is that we have not been charged with any offences regarding Madeleine’s disappearance. It is encouraging that the prosecutor has stated that all lines of enquiry remain open and we have not given up hope of finding Madeleine alive. It is good to see at least some attention re-focussing on finding Madeleine.

Sean and Amelie have settled back in at home very well but they do miss their older sister and we talk about her every day. For Kate and I it has been incredibly difficult to come home without Madeleine but particularly in such circumstances. Our family and friends have rallied round again as they have throughout this entire nightmare and they have also helped keep on top of the huge amount of mail from well wishers. At times our kitchen has looked like a sorting office! We would like to thank everyone for their support. It helps us keep sight of the fact that the great majority of people in this world are good.

Kate and I have been very busy with our legal advisers as we want to be eliminated from the inquiry as soon as possible and start concentrating wholeheartedly again on the search for our daughter. We are very confident this will happen when all the facts are presented together. We are very grateful and thankful to have several businessmen who have pledged financial support to cover legal costs and we were delighted Clarence Mitchell agreed to help us as an official spokesman. It is scary and daunting to imagine how we could have managed to deal with these latter ‘developments’ without such offers of support and commitment. Clarence will try and minimise the impact of the huge media interest in Madeleine’s disappearance on us, as we try and return slowly towards as normal a life as is possible. Although we will NEVER give up on Madeleine, we have to find the right balance for Sean and Amelie so they too do not suffer unnecessarily.

In the meantime we will continue to cooperate fully with the Portuguese authorities. I will update the blog periodically especially if there is any major development.

Day 148 - 09/28/2007
It has been another busy week for Kate and I. Sean and Amelie have settled back into nursery, almost as if they have never been away. They are also enjoying playing in their garden especially on the big slide and their latest escapade is collecting conkers! When they are not in the garden, they are desperate to watch ‘Wallace and Gromit’ or build dens in their bedroom- another new activity introduced by a very special friend of theirs!

The amount of supportive mail we have been receiving has been overwhelming and shows no sign of abating. Just as when we were in Portugal, someone reads every single letter or card and your kind words really do help us. Thank you! We have once again been lucky enough to have had friends and family here helping us. Paul Seddon, the priest who married us and baptised Madeleine, also came down for a day this week too. The media presence in Rothley has reduced to a few photographers now and it has been good to get out and about a little bit in the village. We have had tremendous input from the local police who have kept a quiet presence at the end of the road, allowing us to have some privacy around the house. The support and kind words we have received from the local villagers has also helped to make our return that bit easier.

When we hear of potential sightings of Madeleine, Kate and I try not to get too excited otherwise we would be on a continuous emotional roller coaster, more than that which we are experiencing already. Despite the disappointment, it is encouraging that people are still being vigilant and have not stopped looking for Madeleine. This is so incredibly important to us both. The official advice from the authorities if you think you have seen Madeleine, or another missing child, is to call the local police force immediately and supply any information which might be critical such as a car registration or address.

We are planning a quiet family weekend, catching up with friends and some family who will be coming to visit. We continue to hope and pray that our lovely little girl will be back with us soon.

Gerry is a cardiologist although I am not sure he was actually working in that capacity or more as administrator-type position. Kate is a trained anesthesiologist (I really, really hate typing and spelling that) but she was working only part time as temporary GP two days a week (kind of a fill-in, sub type position, from what I gathered.)

Who was around a lot of dead people on those two days of work a week.:waitasec:

She must have had to pry a cart away from a Candystriper so she could carry all that stuff around from patient to patient!

From Gerry's blog:

At the weekend we again had lots of visitors with kids, which was great for Sean and Amelie. After attending mass yesterday morning we had a family lunch and then spent a couple of hours in the garden playing. There are still a few photographers hanging around at the end of our street taking daily pictures of Kate and I. We are managing to get out and about in the village and we have lots of support from the local community. On Saturday we decided to go for a run but drove nearby and parked the car but we were ‘snapped’ at the end, when I was certainly looking wearier than Kate!

What the heck is he talking about?

When Gerry says they were "snapped," he means "had his picture taken" as in "snapshot."

Does it bother anyone else that an educated doctor keeps writing this prepositional phrase?

"Of Kate and I" :banghead:

*shudders* - I'm not usually such a stickler about grammar, but that is incorrect, and he does it over and over. He should say "Of us" or "Of Kate and myself" or "Of Kate and me." You have to use the objective form, Gerry, inside a prepositional phrase. There is no "I" in a prepositional phrase.

I realize I'm just a stupid American who might not know the grammar rules, but that's what I was taught in English class.

I can't say much because I am not a native English speaker. I try my best though.

What it puzzles me is why he keeps writing about his jogging competitions? I mean...with all due respect....WHO THE HECK CARES????

Obviously, he and Kate are very concerned about appearing to be this "healthy" and "athletic" couple. But also it's because Gerry used to be a competative runner, and he knows that other doctors who are runners are reading his blog, I think. So he's writing to that "audience," which is really rather pathetic, since it sounds as if he is trying to impress them :hand:

In a show of support for Gerry McCann and his family, Paul McIntyre, Alastair Curry and Alistair Douglas are all taking part in the 10K for Men at Bellahouston Park on Father's Day next weekend in Glasgow.

The trio, who have known Gerry since he was a teenage student at Glasgow University . . .

"Gerry was a keen runner and we've all entered races together in the past. We decided this would be a fitting tribute."

...Paul, based at Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital, first met Gerry at a local running group. Gerry was 16 and Paul was studying medicine at Glasgow University.

...His other friends, Alastair Douglas, is a GP in Possilpark, while Alastair Curry is the head of running group JogScotland and have been involved with the campaign by Gerry's brother-in-law John to raise awareness about Madeleine's disappearance. . . . Last month, thousands of people wore yellow ribbons at the Women's 10k run in Glasgow to show support for the family.

Around 12,000 people took part in the race and runners and spectators wore T-shirts and carried placards with a photograph of Madeleine and a plea to contact police with information. Madeleine's aunt Diane McCann, also took part in the race with a group of friends.

I think it's great that his friends want to help the search for Maddie, but he should be more aware of how that is coming across to the general reader. It just seems shallow to me.:(

I'll say! And yes "from Kate and I", "to Kate and I", "for Kate and I", are all wrong. The rule I use (if in doubt) is that when two or more people are involved, use the same pronoun you'd use with just one person. So: "from me", "to me", "for me" gives "from Kate and me", "to Jane, Kate and me", "for Brian, Jane, Russell, Kate and me".

I'm surprised that with all the mucky-muck friends these people have, none can find time to go over Gerry's blogs before he posts them.

Or ... is this a bit of calculated 'common touch'? A trick certain very weathly and well-educated U.S. presidents (who shall remain nameless but are still in office) often use?

They very well may have been advised not to. Kinda like public appearances, they would typically be told not to show anger, fear, etc. There's a good chance the kidnapper is reading that blog. The McCann's and their advisers must know that.

Or, he could just be being a man. My dear IrishMister, whom I love with all my heart would not be able to write about his feelings, or expose those tender parts to the world.

If anything the parents would be encouraged to appeal to what little sense of guilt/remorse/compassion a kidnapper may have - to make their child into a real person in the eyes of the kidnapper and not just an object. You see this again and again in these cases, that's why they have the parents pleading with the abductors on the news - it's often their only hope when ransom isn't the motive for the abduction.

Honestly by now they could not have kept up appearences this long. Madeleine was kidnapped and we are overanalyzing certain aspects. As far as the cadaver dogs let me tell you that there was a rape case in Long Beach California where they threw this young guy in jail and labeled him a serial rapist based on a dog following a scent to his apartment. Guess what? He was innocent but was not released for four months and then it took another year to find the real rapist. The judge slandered him at his release sentencing implying that he was releasing a guilty man. The young guy won a huge settlement from the city which he very much deserved. No evidence usually means no crime.

The "evidence" in this case is a missing child, and the parents were the last people to see her alive.

No, they shouldn't get arrested just based on cadaver dog evidence, but there's more to it than that. There is DNA that corroborates the cadaver dogs. There are also statements, and evidence given by other people, and we don't know all of that yet.

It's never just "one thing" in a case like this. It's a pattern of behavior plus evidence.

Absolutely right kylie.
And more often than not to the parents detriment.

As for Madeleine's DNA being found in both the apartment and the hire car. It would be amazing if none had been found, her DNA would be all over their belongings.
The PLE must know by now if the hair was from a live or dead Madeleine.
According to Dr Baden, a DNA expert. It would take only a few minutes of testing to confirm which.
We have no idea if the cadaver dogs were reacting to Madeleine's scent. Nor do the PLE or the McCanns would be more than suspects.
Have the PLE evidence that proves Madeleine is dead? They need to put up or shut up. IMO
And more importantly, resume searching for Madeleine

Thank you so much for this information, this explain a lot of things.

She took the Bible to work too?
I'm sorry, but as I was reading back over this page, this just cracked me up! :)

I must have missed the info about a Bible. Was a cadaver odor detected on the Bible the same as Kate's clothes and the stuffed toy?
Yes, as well as the car keys.
Thanks for reminding us about the car keys. That is strange evidence, isn't it?

Did the car keys smell like a dead body because of the chicken bones in the tons of garbage they transported? Or due to the leaking diapers in the car boot? Nasty car, indeed.
