You are absolutely correct and sometimes this explains why it can be difficult for some serial killers to be apprehended.
And more likely than not, it's not the wife's fault.

In the video Rex did with the Bonjour Realty guy, he made mention that when he went out on his own, his first "paying client" during the 90's recession was a man named Robert Mayer. They met when they were standing in line at the Queens Building Dept.

He pronounced Mayer in the video as one would say Oscar Mayer...(like "My"er)

There was a Robert Mayer who suspiciously went missing in 2013 from Dix Hills. He was an electrician, so it makes sense he could have been there pulling permits in the 90's. He was roughly about the same age as Rex, I think maybe 2-3 years younger. His vehicle was found abandoned at at train station that was beside a nature preserve IIRC.

Just thinking out loud, wondering if it potentially was the same man, or if Robert Mayer's name was pronounced more like "May"er, not "My"er. Not sure if any locals on here who may be familiar with that family and how they pronounced their name?
Great observation! For a sec I thought of John Doe on Gilgo Beach, but that person is assumed to be of Asian ethnicity

If he’s the one sharing info, I won’t be surprised if he’s back there recording and snapping photos.
Lord knows I’d be documenting every thing lol

In addition to digging up the back yard, I think they need to cut down and look around, under, in, all those trees and bushes.

The photos alone could make someone pretty rich. This stuff doesn't happen every day.

They really dug up the whole yard!

If I were the neighbor in the back, I’d have a live stream and a comfy chair, right at that fence line, every day View attachment 436789
That's a great shot that shows the second green shed, now that the garden stuff and forensics tents are out of the way. I skipped through the video and there are a few points when you can see the roof from the neighbour's side of the fence, it's bigger than the one attached to the house. The roof is green, too, not brown or silver.

I’m very interested to see if there were ever any “lesser” crimes or incidences that took place during Heuermann’s childhood. Ones that, on the surface and at the time, were brushed away or seemed “harmless”. A lot of serial killers are known to have “tested the waters” (so to speak) before they actually kill by peeping into peoples windows or committing petty theft/shoplifting. I wonder if there were ever any peeping incidents that took place involving him while he was growing up.

Absolutely "stalking future prey" aka "duck hunting."
stalk=hunt. He said that because it was only partially a lie. A grain of truth.
Not to mention that there is a difference of only one letter in the alphabet removed from what would clearly state his true activity -uck hunting, later dumped on B--ch Rd. imo. speculation, imo.

His mother is still alive?
Recent reports suggest that Heuermann’s mother has left the senior housing complex in Toms River, NJ, where she previously resided, and has moved in with one of her daughters. from the article

If indeed it is a concrete-encased room with a vault door rather than a freestanding safe, yes, a permit is requires per AJ301.5 of the New York State Residential Building Code (pg 854):

Level 2 alterations include the reconfiguration of space, the addition or elimination of any door or window, the reconfiguration or extension of any system, or the installation of any additional equipment. Level 2 alterations shall comply with the provisions of Section AJ501 for Level 1 alterations as well as the provisions of Section AJ601 [NOTE: Section AJ601 requires obtaining a permit].

I found no record of RH obtaining permits for any work done in the basement, so I'm pretty sure it was done off-the-books. I did find a sketch of the property on the Nassau County Land Records Viewer which shows the dimensions of the house:

I am also attaching a copy of the Property Card from 1/12/2006 which includes detailed information about the house such as materials and structural elements
I wonder if the vault is nothing more than a gun vault. It's confirmed that he had 200 fire arms. I would assume that some had value and would be locked away.

I’m wondering about pets he has had over the years, if any. Serial killers often begin early with animals.

DM has the best photos, why can't other news sites up their photo/video game?
Yeah. I just consider their photos primary sources and never look to their printed words to interpret them. They must have world class drone-photography specialists.

Just thinking…How would he, alone, pour 2-3 feet thick concrete walls to encase the room ? and carry and install a heavy safe door? Yes. He is a huge monster. He was younger. But that seems like a big job.

He has a brother. Two men easily could have done it.

yew, they are usually first on a story and have the best photos, not sure other news sites wouldn't want better photos, some have ZERO photos.

She lives out on the jersey shore? I wonder how long she was living there. Would make trips out to jersey seem not so suspicious.

RH was an architect and knew about building codes.
Was there a local building code that he would have had to deal with to do this construction/addition to his older home?
Would there be zoning requirements or paperwork to be filed?
I am wondering if there is a paper trail with the local government.
Surely LE would know to check this aspect.
In my area all building additions/ construction has to be approved locally - Permits, especially major digging.

Or, would this not be considered an addition? Not something local zoning would be concerned with overseeing?

I guess my point is LE , through local government, should have some idea as to what alterations he made to his property.
But it doesn’t seem as though they do have this info.

It would not surprise me if he violated these laws.
Probably assumed no one would ever find his secret room.
