I agree. The fact no DNA was obtained from RH during booking is surprising... is it related to NY laws (same as the law requiring DNA only to be entered into CODIS upon conviction??). There's no way a defense attorney wouldn't fight a request for DNA swabbing of a client under these circumstances, so I'm surprised the DA wasn't ready for this and have a plan in place. I remain baffled with you about all of this.
Thought it was routine?
But I'd be very surprised if his cutlery and crockery weren't whisked off to a lab.. just sayin'..
Only lE need to know.. because they need the info for their investigation..
otherwise that pizza is doing a lot of work..
if it's a good sample, which it clearly is, they might not even need another..

According to Google, Costello is an Irish name, not Italian. I have no idea if Amber has Italian heritage from elsewhere, though.

Google also suggests Vergara might be Spanish in origin.

MOO
Costello is Irish. Also spelled Costelloe..

Is Costello an Irish surname?

History. The Irish surnames Costello, Costelloe, and Costellow are anglicized forms of the Gaelic surname Mac Oisdealbhaigh, itself a Gaelicized form of an Anglo-Norman name. This was the first example of a Norman family assuming a Gaelic name.

It was even worse than paraphrased. I want to touch base, and if you do, too, call. Very thinly veiled as a colleague call.

MOO
Exactly. There's absolutely no reason for me to be calling you. You know that. I know that. I know you know that. So I'll try to sound all topical and light and see if I can't sweet arm you into meeting up, for no reason at all. Because my real reason can't be stated.

Alarm bells.

okay you guys..Im kid of confused..don't they have Rex's DNA already from the Pizza and his hair? wouldn't they have a full sequence already? If this was addressed pages back, I apologize....:) mOO
They need to get a sample DIRECTLY from him. Saliva or blood are best, with witnesses.

The pizza crust came from a bin, and yes, they saw him put it there, but it's still a sample from an object, not from him. It's plenty to get the PCA from, but for security for trial and the case going forward, they need that primary sample. Blood drawn, or buccal swab.

And the hair sample is the thing they're testing his DNA AGAINST. It's not a representative sample of his DNA in and of itself.

MOO

I think we'd find evidence if the dark triad. Losing his dad at 12, what impact did that have? Standard of living drop? How did the family manage? Did his mom date? Did he see that as a threat, a violation, did he have a creepy incestuous possessive Norman Bates relationship with his mom?

How many sex workers has he hired over the years, discarding certain ones in favor of a "type" which he in turn permanently discarded? Where'd that "type" come from? I'd like to compare photos of all the women in his life, at age 18-25-30. Mother, wife, second wife, high school girls, high school girl's mothers.... his utter disdain for women in violent, palpable, deadly.

That call to his former coworker is chilling. Trying to come off as natural, give me a call, something I want to run by you. Yeah, no. Just say it. State the nature of your business. It was lure-y. And gross.

Today, we are here to announce that as part of the Gilgo task force re-examination of all the evidence in the case, we were able to identify “Fire Island Jane Doe” as Karen Vergata, who was 34 years old at the time of her disappearance. Vergata went missing at approximately Feb. 14, 1996. At the time, she lived on West 45th Street in Manhattan, and was believed to be working as an escort at the time of her disappearance.
There was no missing persons complaint filed at the time of that disappearance. In August of 2022, approximately six months after we formed this Gilgo task force, a DNA profile suitable for genealogical comparison was developed from the remains of Karen Vergata. In September of 2022, the F.B.I. was able to, was able, via a genetic genealogy review, to identify Ms. Vergata presumptively as “Fire Island Jane Doe.”

Thereafter, in October of 2022, using a buccal swab from a relative of Karen Vergata, we were able to definitively identify her. It’s important to note that there are no charges at this time. Ms. Vergata’s disappearance was in 1996, which is 27 years ago. We are going to continue to work this particular case as we did the Gilgo Four investigation. We’re going to have no comment on what, if any, suspects we developed at this time. This is a confidential investigation, so I’m not going to be taking any questions. But our investigation is continuing.

TRANSCRIPTION OF PRESS CONFERENCE

Good morning everyone.

We're here -- I'm here -- with our fellow task force members to announce the identity of what has formerly been known as Fire Island Jane Doe.

On April 25, 1996, female remains consisting of legs and feet were found on the bay side shore of Fire Island about a mile west of Davis Park Beach. Then, approximately 15 years later, on April 11, 2011, additional remains consisting of a skull were discovered at Tobay Beach in Nassau County. Those remains -- that skull was found following the discovery of the remains of Jessica Taylor -- and the skull was found on the same day as the remains of what is commonly come to be referred to as Peaches was found on Jones Beach.

Thereafter, in July 2011, the Suffolk County Crime Lab linked the two sets of remains via DNA analysis, and by that I mean the legs that were found in the vicinity of Davis Park were compared with the remains found at Tobay Beach, and it was determined that it was the same person. Since 2011, that victim was known as various names including Fire Island Jane Doe.

Today, we are here to announce that as part of the Gilgo Task Force reexamination of all the evidence in the case, we were able to identify Fire Island Jane Doe as Karen Vergata, who was 34 years old at the time of her disappearance. And I believe we have a picture of Ms. Vergata, and I think it's important that we remember and honor not only Ms. Vergata, but all the victims on Gilgo Beach.

Ms. Vergata went missing at approximately February 14, 1996. At the time she lived on West 45th Street in Manhattan and was believed to be working as an escort at the time of her disappearance. There was no missing persons complaint filed at the time of that disappearance.

In August of 2022, approximately 6 months after we formed this Gilgo Task Force, a DNA profile suitable for genealogical comparison was developed from the remains of Karen Vergata.

In September of 2022, the FBI was able, via a genetic genealogy review, to identify Ms. Vergata presumptively as Fire Island Jane Doe. Thereafter in October of 2022, using a buccal swab from a relative of Karen Vergata, we were able to definitively identify her.

Prior to disclosing this information, of course we needed to contact all of Ms. Vergata's family members and additionally, at or around the same time, we were beginning our grand jury confidential investigation into what has been known as the Gilgo 4 -- that is, the murders of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello -- so we decided we were not going to make any public comment at this time.

However, since then, the results of that investigation have become public, and we have made the necessary notifications to Ms. Vergata's family, we can make this important announcement now.

I just want to thank in particular Special Agent Lori Giordano from the FBI and her work with the familial DNA. She worked in conjunction with us, our Suffolk County Crime Lab, Don Dollar of the Suffolk County Crime Lab, and his team, in coordination with the Suffolk County Police Department's Homicide Unit. So I want to thank them, in particular for all of their work.

Of course I want to thank our task force members, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, ASAC Spencer Horn from the FBI. I want to thank the New York State Police, Suffolk County Police Department, Rodney Harrison -- who couldn't make it here, I understand Chief Rowan is here in his place instead -- but I want to thank them for not only their work on this case but for all their work in the task force going forward.

It's important to note that there are no charges at this time. Ms. Vergata's disappearance was in 1996 which is 27 years ago. We are going to continue to work this particular case as we did the Gilgo 4 investigation. We're going to have no comment on what, if any, suspects we've developed at this time. This is a confidential investigation so I'm not going to be taking any questions, but our investigation is continuing and thank you all very much.
Since Ms Vergata’s legs were found on April 25, 1996, and showed signs of surgical scars, and because she was last seen by family on Feb 14, 1996, her remains were probably in good condition mostly because it was likely cold the whole time they were out there.

Karen fits to me. My new theory is that RH learned in the late 90's that water disposal doesn't work. Parts float to shore. Then he switched to all ground. Then not dismembered.

MOO
ITA, I think the killer (accused killer, RH) was tweaking his disposal methods in order to or as a means of preventing the remains from ever being found or linked to him.

Vergata Family History

Vergata Name Meaning

Historically, surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups - by occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption, and even physical characteristics (like red hair). Many of the modern surnames in the dictionary can be traced back to Britain and Ireland.

She looks like she could be Irish-Italian. They both look Italian to me just from the photo. hazel eyes right?
Amber's eyes are light, perhaps green? I will keep looking.

I’m right there with you. He has a type and seeing pictures of the significant females in his life might be very telling.

I need to refresh myself on the timeline so this could be way off... do you think he realised that no one was finding the parts he left on Gilgo Beach (when the torsos etc were found quickly), and decided to switch to dumping whole bodies there eventually?

I'm wondering if he oscillated between wanting to shock people with finding the remains, vs. realising he could have the thrill of an undiscovered "trophy case" at Gilgo.

Okay, scratch what I said about Costello, I had completely forgotten that it was a married name. How could I have forgotten Amber was married at one point? Her maiden name is Overstreet, like her sister, which is English/Flemish in origin.
