This article also states there was a locked room in the basement he wouldnt let her in. This was in 2005! He claimed it was full of guns. The room was reportedly 12 X 5
So according to the video I linked below, the guns were found in the basement.

I think the car registration gave them a name and address. From that information, they started looking at phone records (which I feel are prob enough to convict him from reading the bail application). They realized they had his cell phone in close proximity to burner phones, and got the info for the burner phones. They they could track information from HIS phones to close proximity to the phones of the victims. The DNA was just that. NOT genealogy. Several hairs had been found on the victims. Most of them were female. They were too degraded for DNA to be available until the passage of time actually developed technology so that the mtDNA, or maternal, the toughest, longest lasting type) could be read. The female hairs seem to have belonged to his wife. She's very lucky that information concerning her trips out of town was still available as LE confirmed she and the children were out of town when the three disappeared. As I recall from the Bail Application, only one male hair was found on the bodies. That's where the pizza crust comes in -- DNA, but the maternal only, so not genealogy.
I think they used genealogy on the wife's hair.

It is heavily trafficked. There are parks, sports field, a small highway and houses that all back into the preserve. People walk and bike there all day. Lots of fishing and kids feeding ducks. It isn't super wide but its long. There have been bodies found there before, they have been attributed to MS-13. They were found immediately.
Super info. Thanks!

While I also have a strong suspicion that he may be connected to these murders as well (speculation, MOO), I will note that the poster you responded to (@otto) asked if he found a "new hunting ground" after the GB 4 were discovered. The Atlantic City 4, or victims of the "Eastbound Strangler," were discovered in 2006 and therefore predate the GB 4 (found between 2010 and 2011).

While we all know serial killers can abruptly stop killing, like BTK, IMO Rex did not. He still continued to see sex workers, even up until his arrest. Like @otto, I wonder what happened / how he changed behaviors or tactics after the discovery of the GB4.
I'm just going to toss out another speculation and BIG MY OWN OPINION: I suspect there's a boat that has not yet been discovered. This man lived so near water all his life, he had the means, he owned his own business to use a boat as a write off for entertaining guests AND most importantly he did not have to clear using his boat with anyone . . . . I have this deep instinct there was at least one boat that 1. hasn't been discovered yet or 2. LE knows about it but hasn't released info to the public yet. I wonder about his work years before forming his own company . . ..

Second storage unit found, at a location different from the first, and will be searched today. This statement is a bit confusing though:

"It’s still unclear who the storage units belong to."

Perhaps this is a family storage unit?

With respect to the first unit, they have provided an update: "Suffolk police executed a search warrant Sunday at a storage unit in Amityville. A police vehicle, police tape and floodlights could still be seen at the scene Monday morning. A tent was also set in the area." Sounds to me like they must have found something MOO

He's like a squirrel with items stashed in many places. This does cause me to wonder about additional victims, hidden elsewhere.

He worked for another architect before starting his own company. Under that boss, he discovered his interest in dealing with building codes and the building department. Before that he was likely a college student.

I'm not seeing a boat connection or entertaining client history, but I guess we'll find out. LE seems to be turning over everything is his life now. Good.

Replying to myself. I'm remembering now they took a water bottle from the family trash that linked to her hair?

I need to start taking notes as I'm losing track of info.

Speaking of that, just watching CNN where they were reporting on Rex H. They said the new leader of the Suffolk County PD brought in the FBI team (CAST) that specializes in retrieving and compiling cell phone data. It was a key part of the investigation (and many others) to be able to go through a massive pile of data and make sense of it.

Yes. Advanced mapping technology for increase accuracy. CASTViz created by the CAST team has the ability to quickly plot call details records and tower data. (This was used in Kohberger too) MOO

I'm not sure that's possible. GedMatch.com does not deal with mtDNA, which is the most difficult, almost impossible to use for genealogy. I've tested myself and various family members. Autosomal DNA is what GetMatch accepts. So many, many people do NOT include trees or any genealogical information. With mtDNA, it skips around name wise, from mother to daughter, whose name changes when she marries to another daughter. Besides, I believe mtDNA is the least utilized form that genealogists use to tract their own family. Don't get me wrong -- DNA is amazing and I'm fascinated with it. I'm just not sure how feasible it would be for RH's wife's mtDNA to be used. or even her autosomal if that were available. I don't see Iceland having that many testers . . .

Shepherd, 47, who worked with Heuermann for five years, spent three hours assessing his Massapequa Park, New York home for a renovation project in 2005 – just one of several close interactions she had had with him that have kept her awake at night since his arrest last week.

Speaking DailyMail.com, she described how she had developed a friendly, working relationship with the 59-year-old architect who is seen mingling with the interior designers and colleagues in exclusive photos published for the first time.

She revealed Heuermann even once took her to a firing range in the Bronx where he taught her how to fire a 9mm handgun.

On another occasion when she slipped on ice, Heuermann accompanied her to a hospital and then back to her apartment in Manhattan where he gave her meds.

Shepherd worked with Heuermann, off and on, from 2002 to 2007 and shared office space with him for two of those years in Manhattan, where he ran an architectural firm.

She would regularly travel with him to job sites as a freelance interior designer. At the time she found him smart and mostly friendly, if socially awkward.

She now likens him to a real-life Dexter, the Showtime character who led a double life as a serial killer.

'He's just like Dexter,' she told DailyMail.com. 'You'd never know if you met him. Dexter was also super normal and then he had that other side.'
The Dexter comparison annoys me. Dexter had a “code” to only kill bad guys. (With some exceptions)

Can genealogy be done with MtDNA?
Yes and no, but more of a no.

Yes, they can look for mtDNA matches in the area and look for their offspring. Mt-DNA is passed (more-or-less) identically from mother to kids. Many mt-DNA types are rather rare and therefore easier to track. Quite some are common (though if you go for maximum precision, then a bit less common) and might not be so useful.

No, they cannot build a full family tree like you can with autosomal DNA. No combinating, therefore less info. You only know that this hair with this mt-DNA and this person with this mt-DNA have a common mothers-mothers-mothers-mothers...xN... mother. But you cannot 100% track this down to someone specific, because unlike autosomal DNA that is shared only by identical twins (and even in twins often not 100%), mt-DNA is identical in the maternal line until a spontaneous mutation happens.

Hope this made sense. All MOO.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani – one of the most effective federal prosecutors in American history – was on scene to cover this heinous crime as part of his hit new livestream show, ‘America’s Mayor Live’,” said Ted Goodman, Mr Giuliani’s political adviser.

“The mayor commends all involved in the case, but knows there is still work to be done in order to deliver justice.”

The drop-by visit drew confused reactions on social media, with users calling it “creepy” and “weird” that Mr Giuliani was inserting himself in the case.
Ummmm, this is extremely odd. I wonder if by any chance Rudy was part of the Oak Beach party crowd. MOO/Speculation only.

It started in August of 2020
Hmm. I would be comparing to dates he travelled around 2017/2018. He gave a deposition for one of the car crash trials he had going back in 2017. The deposition was in April of 2018 and he talks about being in Cocoa Beach in January of 2017. He also talks about driving alone down to Virginia a few times. Most interesting, when asked about driving trip he took only 14 days before the deposition and wether he took it alone he simply "cannot recall". When pressed, RH finally answers that he does not think his wife was with him. 14 days later and he cannot remember if his wife was with him or if he went alone through multiple states? Curious.

According to this source LE is looking for body parts or trophies related to the killings

I had the exact same thought. Funny the impulse to defend a fictional serial killer that only killed horrible people.

I find it fascinating and astonishing that after 13 years they are apparently finding enough of something to keep them at the home for a 5th day; a storage unit overnight and into a 2nd day; and now a second storage unit. JMO
