The local ABC affiliate says 3 sources have told them that Rex H will be charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes on Tuesday.

Maureen is the victim whose body was partially bound by the belt with the distinctive gold fastener with the initials WH (or HW).

lisk-belt-pd.jpg

This source mentions a buckle or fastener that's gold.

I don't recall that being in evidence. I remember when the SCPD under Hart made this announcement and attempted not to reveal who was bound in this belt, it was always frustrating and weird that we could not see the buckle. It seemed to me at the time, the buckle would be more memorable or recognizable.

There was a lot of speculation that it was a woman's belt, a police uniform type belt, blah blah blah, which could have been cleared up with the buckle, more information about the length, etc.

As I recall, it was inadvertently released that this belt was associated with Maureen because the website posted the photo without removing its file name, which had her name in it. So it became clear it was found on/near her. And some cryptic note with the file like, "no glove."

I think the police only said the killer is believed to have handled the belt; I don't recall knowing she was tied with it then.

i wonder if we will see the buckle soon, and if it makes it seem more likely that someone must have been able to ID the belt?

I think part of the problem is that, in this case, the killer's wife is earning millions of dollars while the victims families have received little or nothing.

They will be left with the option of suing Rex H, which will yield little, if anything.
Maybe I missed the summary of the Peacock plan, do we know if victim’s families are part of this production? If so, Peacock should pay them for their contributions.

IIRC, the victims families are not part of the production.

The article at the link states the victim was wrapped with the belt. I hope that's accurate.

Brainard-Barnes was found wrapped with a belt that had a distinctive buckle bearing the initials WH, which could stand for Heuermann's father, prosecutors have said.

This article says the same

Do you think Asa’s film crew will be allowed into the courtroom?
The announcement said "press credentials required"

Alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann has been indicted on a new murder charge in the killing of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who investigators believe was the first of the "Gilgo Four" to be killed, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday.Heuermann, 60, is appearing in court Tuesday morning before Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei in Riverhead to a superseding indictment charging him with second-degree murder in Brainard-Barnes’ killing.Prosecutors proclaimed Heuermann, of Massapequa Park, the prime suspect in Brainard-Barnes’ killing when he was arrested July 13 in the slayings of three other women. The new charges against Heuermann come six months after his arrest in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty.

Tierney walked into the courtroom about 9:15 a.m. with an entourage, including Melissa Cann, sister of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Minutes later, Heuermann's estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, arrived with daughter, Victoria Heuermann, who is in court attending a proceeding in her father's criminal case for the first time.

Prosecutors said Heuermann's now-estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, and his children were out of town when Brainard-Barnes disappeared and was killed, fitting an alleged pattern of Heuermann being home alone when the other three killed…

The new filing also revealed that prosecutors seized two phones from Heuermann at the time of his arrest that they said were held by him "in fictitious names and used for illicit activities." Prosecutors said Heuermann "utilized these phones in furtherance of hundreds of contacts with sex-workers between 2020 and 2023."

I wonder why the charge is second degree murder.

I wonder why the charge is second degree murder.
Watching the presser now and they explained it. It's because of the time lapse between murders.

''Gilgo Beach Serial-Murder Case Hangs on a Hair and Its DNA

Prosecutors put their faith in complex scientific evidence gathered painstakingly from burial sites and garbage cans.''
Presser today says 5 hairs! female and male with both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Wow.

Sadly.

Murder creates a trail of injustices. Lasting nightmare for everyone touched by it. No justice.

The most we can hope for is THAT HE gets HIS justice. LWOP.

How many of these sex workers are still alive is my first morbid thought. :(

To me the second-degree charge implies the first murder was not premeditated like the other three were. Or they can't find enough evidence for a first-degree charge, like the other three. MOO.

They are lucky to be alive! If they had only known!
