Former Suffolk County Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison said he had asked the county administration for funding to create a cold-case unit and other specialized units but was rebuffed for budget reasons. When he became commissioner, he said solving the Gilgo Beach case was a high priority."Of course one person being found outside is alarming, but hearing a number of 100 is something that is unacceptable," he said.

I'm really surprised. I expected more charges. moo Also, I had hoped more families would get closure.

''Brown then said he had questions regarding the "admissiblity" of the nuclear DNA presented by the prosecution. The new, nuclear SNP — single nucleotide polymorphism , from a hair shaft — DNA has not yet been deemed admissible in New York State, Tierney said.

Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Santomartino said the defense had been given 99.9 percent of the raw data from the more than 400 electronic devices taken from the Heuermann home; in total, the prosecution has provided the defense with about 120 terabytes of material.
Heuermann's next court date is December 17''

Suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann appeared before a judge for a status hearing Wednesday morning. CBS News New York's Carolyn Gusoff reports.

Tierney said investigators continue to look at Heuermann in connection with other killings and would not rule out future indictments before the December conference."We speak in indictments and we will charge when we're ready to charge," Tierney said.

120 terabytes of material. Wow.
I know that will include copies of whole hard drives etc, but that's an astounding amount of data from an equally astounding amount of devices.

That is a lot of material to go through, kudos to them. it must have taken endless hours of looking through grim details. That being said, I pray every single megabyte has enough evidence to identify the victims and lock him up for life.

Newsday and Long Island Press both covered RH's court hearing today. Since Newsday is behind a paywall I'm not including it, but here is the link for LIP.Long Island Press Gilgo Story

One of the worst things about this information is that there are countless victims on those devices and they likely are not the same ones we are aware of :(

FWIW I'd just like to say that even though it's taken many years to get to this place, I am pleased to see how swiftly everything has been moving. I too pray that LE are able to ID more people. Not an easy task.

Wondering if there might be EXIF data contained within those terabytes of images? Hopefully there are breadcrumbs.

JMHO.

Perhaps it is a good thing it has taken so long. Today's forensics are much better than they were when the crimes were committed.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office in New York lacks the resources to meet "ambitious" deadlines imposed by the judge overseeing the Gilgo Beach serial killing case, DA Ray Tierney said Wednesday.

Tierney called on the Justice Department to release some money tied up in an ongoing investigation into the office to help defray the cost of a prosecution that he said presents "a singularly unique strain on our budget."

"I think the timeline right now is very ambitious and very compressed given the ridiculous nature of our discovery laws, where I have to provide every single piece of paper that was generated in a case that started in 1993," Tierney said.

Tierney is asking for millions in federal asset forfeiture proceeds frozen by the Justice Department as part of an ongoing investigation into a previous district attorney. He estimated about $13 million is tied up in that investigation

Maybe they will proceed with the cases they first charged to get a conviction, then definitively link the other cases later.

JMO, it would be difficult for the court and the jury if they try a large number of cases all at one time. The amount of discovery evidence would be voluminous and difficult for the jury to understand and analyze in order to make a decision for each case. Deliberation would take weeks, if not a month.

The trial itself would take a month or more just for the prosecution to present the evidence and argue for each individual case. They're all complicated and unique, with different circumstances and crime scenes with many, many witnesses who would be called to testify.

It's possible they'll hold trials in the future for the other cases. By all means, the state should fully investigate and determine Rex H's involvement in all of them.

Yes, if the DA's office was preparing only for 3-4 of the cases to go to trial, the investigation by the taskforce could continue for however long it needs to be certain there's enough evidence for convictions. The trial of a few would be much shorter, easier on a jury and cost Suffolk County less money.

Few of us have any idea what the cost of a case this huge might run. I would guess that Suffolk County has a lot of money, but it also seems to have a lot of crime that needs to be investigated, solved and prosecuted.

Does anyone here happen to know what the annual budget is for the DA's office? Or what department(s) the budget for the Taskforce goes through? I think the financial aspect of a case this size would give me nightmares.

The added advantage of trying some of the cases and getting convictions might be that RH would talk once he's convicted and sentenced. So, perhaps try the strongest cases as soon as they can prepare them for trial (as they worked the Gilgo 4 earliest because they were the latest in time) and set a later date for those the DA's office needs more time to work?

While I believe the evidence against RH is extremely strong, if he were my loved one sitting in jail in solitary confinement, I feel sure I'd be pushing for a speedy trial. BTW, I don't have any sympathy for RH, but looking dispassionately at this, any citizen lingering in jail without a conviction or even a trial doesn't feel right, either.

BBM
Not too long after RH was arrested Macedonio, when asked about their marriage said that it was "troubled" for quite a few years and I was surprised he admitted that about his client's marriage.
IIRC it was during an interview and not a statement he gave to the press.
I think I had posted it at the time and have looked online for it with no success.
Does anyone else remember that?

I wouldn’t believe anything Macedonio says. He probably made that comment as a precursor to AE soon announcing she would file for divorce. Macedonio probably advised her to do it to protect her assets and income.
