Girl Seriously Injured in Swimming Pool Mishap

I really hate to ask this, but I have to. Exactly how does one's intestinal tract come "out"? I have never heard of this before. It sounds pretty common. I want to make sure I warn my kids. Can someone please explain this whole concept to me?

:(:( That is one of the saddest (and strangest) accidents I've heard about.
Healing prayers to the little angel and her family. She unfortunately has a rough road ahead of her.

I thought John Edwards had been instrumental in getting laws to stop this very thing from happening....or was that just in his home state?

My heart goes out to that poor child. She is lucky to be alive!

SD,
I'm sorry but I have to ask, what exactly did John Edwards say he'd do? I've never heard of this type of accident before.

If there is a wound or cut there, the intestine can spill out.

Actually, the intestines just get sucked out through the anus. It is really awful.

He won a big jury verdict for one girl. I don't recall anything in particular about changing the law.

Here's a link to a summary of the Valerie Lakey case, in which Edwards got an award of $24 million:

Note that there had been several other cases prior to this one. And this was 10 years ago. It is horrible that it still happens.

Thanks for that link Luthersmama. So sad and that company KNEW that they needed to do something about making the drains harder to remove by the time THAT MANY children had been injured!

Good idea about braiding the hair Shadow.:blowkiss: So sorry for your niece. Nobody should have to go through that. :( How is she doing? I know sometimes people blame themselves for things beyond their control.

My niece is doing okay, thanks for asking. She was heartbroken and riddled with guilt, although she did everything she could. Fortunately the parents were understanding and did not blame her. It was their pool, and they realized that this could have happened even if they were home. There was an investigation and she was completely exonerated by the police and the insurance company, since she was watching them from the pool deck when it happened, so she was not negligent. It took her a long time to get past it, and she still doesn't like to babysit for anyone other than family now.

luthersmama,
Thanks for the information. (I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know that.)

Thanks. I looked this up last night and found out. I was thinking it had to be the anus or vagina, I just wasn't sure. I swear, I never in a million years would have thought this possible. It sounds like something kids would do for fun because the suction would feel funny. I am so totally going to tell my daughter and her friends. My daughter wanted to have her b-day party at a pool this month, now I'm not so sure!

In our pool in the 70's which Im sure safety standards were horrible back then *I* thought the suction thing was hilarious and me and my sister would always put our feet on it but our pool was too deep to sit on it. I'll have to watch my daughter closely with ours. Our suction is on the sides as it is an above the ground pool but she has really thick long hair.

Bless her heart. I am happy she is healing. :)

Do you really think he cares about changing the laws to prevent this??
Dream on....
