Girl wins contest with false essay about soldier dad...

  • #61
Unless..."that day" was the day the little girl was born "when she was having me" and it has been in a jewelry box since then until she is old enough to wear it.

Just playing devil's advocate.

No devil's advocate towards me, angelmom... I couldn't care less about this to be honest. :) Apart from the fact that, like I said, that struck me as interesting in light of that debate.

The thing that bothers me is not whether the essay is true or not or who wrote it, but that the mom provided additional details about the father's 'death' to the company afterwards. That makes it bad.

As sad as it is for the child to lose the tickets, the mother blatently lied to win the essay for the innocent child. (She is 6 years old and in no way responsible for this con!) I feel the essay should definitely be disqualified and given to another child who wrote a legitimate essay.

The lowlife mother who pulled this stunt will have to live with the disappointment she caused her child. She needs to take the blame for her losing this contest. Not to mention, the ridicule, humiliation, and everything else she has brought upon her daughter. What a worthless piece of garbage as a role model!!

I agree Deanws..
I was willing to look at another motive but now that more info has come out I can only say that if it fell within the guidelines of the contest then she deserves the tickets.

As for the mother helping her?? I don't like it one bit but having four children in school you see this with all kinds of projects... Like the science fair..
Totally annoys me since I make my children do them on their own with minimal help and the kids that win mostly and obviously the parents did the entire project.
Yes!!!! I LOVE to see the KID's work. It is the only way they really learn anything from the project. I am glad that you understand that it is about learning, not winning. So many parents are clueless. They wonder why their kids are caught years later cheating in college. Well duh! They learned it from them!!! My youngest child informed me when he was in the 6th grade that I didn't need to check his homework any longer. It hurt my feelings. I backed off. It was the best thing that ever happened. He was more independent after I quit looking over his shoulder. He was the last one and I wanted to baby him. I still do!     He said I was a "helicopter parent" always hovering over him.

I'm wondering what sort of other essays were submitted such that a 1 paragraph essay wins.

The tickets should be stripped from that mother and daughter.

Mom is disgusting! That poor child being raised by a woman with morals like that!

So the essay didn't have to be true? Is that what I'm understanding?

I'm surprised there weren't more powerful fake letters stating homes burned down, and parents died in a car accident, etc.

I would bet most were truthful letters though.

They shouldn't allow them to win, as that is only incouraging people to lie in order to gain what they want. This little girl's mother had to have wrote the whole thing, as i can't imagine a 6 year old being able to spell and write out the whole thing herself, although it's not unheard of. They need to learn a lesson on being truthful, and needless to say, should not win through having told lies. They should donate their tickets to the make a wish foundation. That would save them face, also.

Upon reading your quote above it seems that the company did not say the essay had to be truthful and that the little girl is aware that what she wrote was a work of fiction.

An outright lie is certainly different then writing an essay based on fiction.
With this all coming to light I still feel the child deserves the tickets.

I do understand how such a work of fiction would upset some but if the contest did not specify then I do not see fault with making up a story..
Furthermore the mother has a point... children ARE encouraged to write and make up essays at school all the time.
Me too.

The article includes the essay quoted at the bottom. I used to work for this company and I am 100 percent sure they did not clean up the essay.

The mothers Myspace page now says invalid user ID.

I'll bet it will have a very long list of rules for its future contests.

A 6-year-old girl who won four tickets to a Hannah Montana concert with an essay that falsely claimed her father died in Iraq won't be going to the show after all.

The contest's sponsor, Club Libby Lu, withdrew the prize on Saturday and awarded it to another unnamed winner.

"With this decision, we hope to revive the intended spirit of the contest, which was designed to make a little girl's holidays extra special," Club Libby Lu chief executive Mary Drolet said in a statement Saturday.

I had a feeling that was coming, even though they said at first they wouldn't!

Some people at LibbyLu are probably mentally looking forward to a nice cold martini as soon as possible...I know I would be--along with no mention of Hannah Montana for a few hours!

I hope they find a little girl with very special circumstances. Bet they do!

What's the big deal? writing a fake story to see a fake entertainer is hardly cause for alarm. The mother does appear to have the skills necessary to get a job in Homeland Security.
