New Year’s 2026: Celebrations around Australia

Sydney celebrations sombre as Australia welcomes new year

An hour before the clock struck 12, the harbour bridge glowed white with its pylons bearing a menorah to commemorate the 15 people killed at a Hanukkah celebration.

Nah I'm just here by myself.

No one in my family who live elsewhere is into ringing each other at midnight.

I used to do it but after quite a few grumpy "you woke me up" I eventually gave up.

My friend of a few years, asked me years ago do I do anything on New Year's Eve.

I said that my friend who has passed away and myself either spent the evening together, or the part heading up to midnight and if we couldn't be together in person we'd be on the phone for the countdown and to wish each other a happy new year.

My friend of a few years said I'm glad you don't do anything special for the night ? because he goes to bed early LOL

So I said Happy New Year to myself when it hit midnight

But I do miss the enthusiasm of my friend who passed away.
He made every day a holiday and every day fun.

Sometimes I think I'm living in a world full of misery guts and old fuddy duddy's

We're just heading to bed here. We stayed up for the fireworks on tv. We're staying with our good friends, who at least twice a year put us up for a few days and feed us All The Pig, cooked for hours in their Weber. Today was just the appetisers - jalapeno poppers and maple soy chicken wings. Tomorrow I expect will be a pork roast, slow cooked plus sides.

We're all neuro divergent, so we just hang out, chill, sometimes just 'parallel play' without pressure, other times watch things together, or play games. Tonight we watched Nimona and played an rpg card game called Sentinels, drank some gin and bubbly wine and watched the fireworks. I also got to sit and talk video games with one of them, which is fun for us because neither of our partners are quite as enthused about video games, and we have a fair amount of overlap in what we like to play.

Living in Florida for the past 15 years... there were lots of "all the pig" New Years events....
I really do miss this.
Up North... people just stay put for the most part.....

I say All The Pig, it isn't a whole hog roast, just lots more than we usually eat all at once! Multiple absolutely delicious meals. It's lovely, really, but every time we come home and eat salads for a few days to balance out! Not because we're dieting, but just because after that much protein we're craving vegetables.

I've been trying to balance myself out since Christmas.
My daughter sent me a huge box of the most amazing chocolates.

I thought I wasn't a big chocolate eater, but that box became very special to me while I was on my own over Christmas..
It felt nice and special every time I ate something out of it.

Since then I think I look a bit chunkier

So it's back on the stepper bike, back walking and I even survived a few nights going to bed hungry.

I told my stomach to stop complaining and be happy with a drink of water.

Do you all remember Y2K? We were so scared. We were told that when the clock turned to 2000, all our lives would be in chaos because the computers couldn't understand 2000. People literally bought enough food for their families for a year because the farms, the trucks, the medicine, the gas, and EVERYTHING were going to shut down. What happened? Nothing. I think I remember a gas station in Peoria had an issue but that's it. LOL
Do you all remember the panic?

I remember the Y2K panic very well. I was working at a software company at the time and our customers were terrified! I also remember my husband staying up “babysitting” our computers to make sure they were okay.

Oh gosh, I worked in the cash office at our Walmart for Y2K. The ones that believed everything they read and were told about doomsday bought up water, paper goods and canned foods. Guess what happened Jan 2? They all brought it back and WM gave them refunds that our office had to process!

It wasn't a hoax.

The reason why nothing seemed to happen is because many experts in the IT field and others came together. working for years right up to the actual day to try to minimise the harm.

It's a credit to them, but also a shame that what they did is written off as being worried about nothing.

Y2K was a real threat.

Back in 2000, a genuine global threat named Y2K turned out to be no big deal — for one very simple reason.

We have the luxury of smirking about Y2K now only because the right people did the right things at the right time. Experts sounded early warnings, and — what a concept! — those in power actually listened, then pulled together to act on those informed opinions.

Make no mistake: In places like the U.S., where a presidential impeachment was underway, the same old partisan politics were the norm. Still, there was enough cooperation and common sense that everyone was willing to work to turn a serious problem into something that, nearly a generation later, could become a kind of joke.

Government efforts to fund and resolve Y2K issues enjoyed widespread support from all political parties, demonstrating a level of unity that was heartwarming and reassuring then — but almost impossible to imagine today.

Think about that the next time you hear the term “Y2K.” It shouldn’t be a punchline, or a label for some silly fashion trend. It should instead be the byword for how we oppose ignorance, ignore petty differences and come together to solve a common problem — before it’s too late.

A bird came to my backyard today that caught my attention.
It was pure white with pale green underneath.

I don't think I've ever seen a white bird in my garden before.
Lots of others, like crimson rosella's etc.

I just looked through a long list of birds found in our area, complete with photos. It's not there.

No I didn't take a photo. My phone camera isn't the best.

Maybe the bird was one that escaped from someone.

I've branched out lol to any white bird with green underneath.

I have a big book of Australian birds I can look through but I think it only shows native ones.

Maybe the bird came and sat for awhile to herald in the new year

I don't think it's a Little Corella. Though maybe I mistook the yellow underneath for pale green ?

It was slender and sat tall and the feathers were more sleek than photos I've seen of the Little Corella's

Thanks for the suggestion. Who knows it might be it.
