Gov. Haley Barbour approved full pardons for nearly 200 people

I've never understood what gives a Governor the right to make such a big decision. Do they actually do research on the criminals they are releasing? Have secretaries to do so? No contact w/the families victims to hear their side? Think about the "bad press" they will get if they reoffend?

Why? Because all the other Governors did it? Be your own person. Religious beliefs of forgiveness(Huckabee)? I guess they don't believe in the "separation of church and state" and the fact it's not up to them to forgive.

Not to mention separation of branches of government! The judicial branch determined these people to be guilty, and the legislative branch determined the actions which are crimes and the penalties for the crimes. The only thing, at best, the executive branch (pay attention to that word...executive...as in execute the determinations of the legislative and judicial branches) branch should be able to do is insist on a new trial.

Barbour defends controversial pardons as based on the Christian belief in forgiveness

"Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Friday he's "very comfortable" with his decision to grant pardons or other clemency to more than 200 people, including convicted killers, in his last days in office, telling Fox News that Mississippi is predominantly Christian and believes in forgiveness."

I just found this thread and Thank You for the updates ! I knew WS would be on top of this !!!:rocker:

It is ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL what Barbour has done releasing and giving "pardons" to murderers and criminals !!! :furious:

I love the Mississippi Gulf Coast and it is like my "second home" ... I live in New Orleans [which is just an hour away from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi] and have been going to the Gulf Coast since I was a child ! I was just there 3 days ago and will be back there next week ...

I have always felt "SAFER" on the Gulf Coast than I do in New Orleans -- where crime is RAMPANT as well as RAMPANT CRIME in ALL of the suburbs of New Orleans ...

I am just OUTRAGED at what Barbour done ... his "political career" is OVER !

Barbour needs to be held ACCOUNTABLE for this !

So what can be done to hold Barbour accountable ?

:furious:

I'm glad that he's comfortable. What about the families of the former victims of these guys and the surviving victims themselves? I doubt they are comfortable. In fact, if I were a still living victim of one of the guys released, I would be terrified right now. What if they start hunting down witnesses to get revenge or make sure that a retrial doesn't happen?

Glad he's comfortable, and the criminals are comfortable, cuz the rest of us are decidedly uncomfortable, to say the least.

He is also talking about forgiveness. What right does he have to forgive these people? He is not the victim. Unbelievable.

Oooh. I didn't realize wife killers aren't likely to commit another crime. Too bad Scott Peterson isn't in Mississippi. Could have been a free man today.

Would he be forgiving if one of these convicts killed his wife? His daughter? A close family friend? What Haley Barbour has done is wrong, plain and simple.

Oh, really? Then why is it that Southern Red States have a "three-strikes you're out" policy even for 17-year-olds? I thought that was the "norm" in a Southern Red State. Why do they use "3-strikes" to toss kids out of school on the flimsiest evidence?

OMG - I live in TN, so I know what the norm is for a southern state. Barbour has lost his flippin' mind as far as I'm concerned.

My husband just asked me if he was following the parole board recommendations, and that's a valid point. But why pardon them all at once, and not when they came up for parole?

To let them out because he "befriended" them at the Gov's mansion is just overturning juries, DAs, police, and Judges. He is overstepping the bounds of his power. :twocents:

Did he follow parole board recommendations? It was reported that at least one of the killers was denied parole recently, and he pardoned him anyway.

Hey Everyone,

Tomorrow night (Sunday) on Websleuths Radio (8 PM Eastern) I will have a great guest who can help us get to the bottom of these outragous pardons.

I have decided to call this episode of Websleuths Radio, "WHAT THE HELL?"

Prof. PS Ruckman has studied extensively these pardons and will offer us a fascinating look into what the hell is going on.

Speaking of what the hell is going on Dr. Glenn Lipson and true crime author Dawna Kaufmann join us as we try and figure out how Casey Anthony's psych evaluation came to the conclusion that she wasn't crazy. Like I said, "WHAT THE HELL???"

I haven't read through this whole thread because I am afraid to. I am so angry with this Governor, who supposedly works/ed FOR the people of our country! (I know, he worked for the state, but it affects our whole country!)

I am so frustrated that this protocol/law is even on the books...where individuals with too much power can make decisions CLEARLY NOT in the best interest of others.

I hope with enough backlash to this one of many instances of pardons that legislature will make a change and not put this power in the hands who are clearly acting on THEIR OWN behalf.

Sorry for the rant...couldn't help myself!

Well this Presbyterian preacher's kid who GREW UP in Mississippi and wants to return to live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast before too long believes in forgiveness as well....only it's up to the VICTIMS and the VICTIMS' FAMILIES to do the forgiving...NOT the outgoing guvnah or even the majority of Mississippi citizens, IMO. :furious:

And even when victims say they forgive (which some victims do), I really doubt that means they want the offenders to roam around free. I don't know what this ex-governor is thinking.

WOW, yet another reason to keep religion out of government...

This governor, should sit down and listen to the victims and their stories about the prisoners he just pardoned.

This has to be one of the WORST mis-carriage of justice I have ever heard of.

WHO does this guy think he is? I really cannot say what I'd like to say because I'd be banned.

But, I will say this. WHAT A TOTAL IDIOT.

I have to wonder-about the victims families. How are they going to take this? If my daughter was a victim of one of these people that this guy just pardoned- There would be repercussions. There is the "Make My Day Law".

I really feel for the victims and their families here. This is just beyond awful IMO. And Yes. WHAT the HELL?
