One immediate source of confusion from the article:

It says his backpack was stolen but his passport was ok because it was around his neck.

Then we learn he went to the consulate early the next day to report his passport stolen.

Which was it, stolen or not?

It's apparent that everywhere he is reported and seen, he was alone. He didn't appear to have made friends with anyone that he might have invited back to the boat.

It's a puzzle, given the state the boat was left in. I can understand the family want to know what happened.

Edited to add: there have been cases in Europe of single men being given a spiked drink at a bar, then followed to be robbed.
