I can relate to your first thoughts. When I first moved here from Jersey, a friend of mine said that she was going down on Grandpa's knob for the weekend. ............. Grandpa's knob is downstate.
She cleared up what was racing through my mind. So you are not the only one who had their mind in the gutter on the name here.
Why would something be named that.

Maybe a Knob was the same thing as a Knoll or something 'back in the day'. I have to say, though, to see who posted it, and what it said in the title - did make my head do the "huh?" tilt.
