Just awful.

I hope there is not truth to this. If LE finds out some fires were set on purpose then I hope they arrest them and give them life sentences or worse.

"Officials have suggested the current blazes may have been started by arsonists looking to loot abandoned homes."

Some obviously had nowhere to escape the flames. Lots of people ran down to the water and were trapped by the water because flames went all the way to water.

One thing I saw on some of the pictures is some homes near the destruction survived the blaze so I guess some people would knock on doors of some of the homes that were not burning yet. I hope the owners let in strangers if that happened.

I guess we will hear stories unfold of how some survived.

It is awful and its too bad that there wasnt more escape routes. I think the wind had a lot to do with how fast the fires spread. I read where winds were 60MPH in some places and that is fast winds.

Such a tragedy. Prayers for all involved.

It’s awful. Reminded me of the fires near Barcelona six years ago where people had to leave their cars on the freeway and run towards the sea. Two people, a father and daughter jumped off a cliff into the sea and died. Tragic.

Greece to demolish 3,200 illegal buildings after killer fires

Greece will demolish thousands of illegal buildings in response to the death of dozens of people who were unable to escape a maze of poorly planned streets in the country's worst wildfire disaster.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whose government has been accused of a slow response, said Greece must no longer allow illegal construction that has been common for decades in a country dogged by bureaucracy and corruption.

The demolition of 3,200 buildings will start immediately in the Attica region, which includes the capital Athens, he said.
