Greece Greece - Ben Needham, 21 mos, Isle of Kos, 24 July 1991

  • #301
Have just watched the latest Calendar update from Duncan Wood. No breaking news. The work on the farmhouse should be finished by Sunday and the work on the second site, the rubble, should be finished by Tuesday.
Duncan drove to a high spot in the road to give an aerial view of the farmhouse and the dumping ground site and to show the distance between them.
A matter of minutes, less than a kilometre distance.

He mentioned again that the digger was driving up and down the lane on the day Ben disappeared, as well as being on the site.

Interesting that the first time Dino mentioned that there might have been an accident, with Ben and the digger, was back in 2012.
Greece has a 20 year limitation law. A person cannot be convicted of a crime if the crime was committed more than 20 years ago.
2012 was the 21st year after Ben went missing.

So now there is a third site that will be searched !

South Yorkshire Police have been told of new sites where “Dino” Barkas, may have buried Ben.

A motorcyclist had stopped and told officers examining an old rubbish tip: “I don’t know why you are digging there – Dino dumped his old rubble up the road.”

Officers are said to be taking this new information very seriously.

They have been given authorisation to extend their dig, which had been due to end on Tuesday.

Statement from DI Cousins, talking about the investigation at the second site.

We are going to be doing this to give me the confidence that I've done everything I can.

I am lifting all the earth behind us. We're going to work through it in similar fashion to what we've done up at the farmhouse.

The team are 100% behind this. And every single one of them, including the volunteers, are adamant that they are staying for this period of time. It's got to be done.

I've got to be able, when I leave Kos, I know myself, when I sit down with the family, I can tell them that we've done everything we can to find an answer
in relation to what happened to Ben.

– John Cousins, Detective Inspector

Mr Cousins scotched rumours that his officers were searching a third site on Kos.

He confirmed he had been given information about another area where digger driver Konstantinos Barkas deposited rubble 25 years ago.

The current operation was prompted by information that Mr Barkas, also known as Dino, was clearing land with an excavator close to where the Sheffield toddler was playing on the day he vanished and may be responsible for his death.

But Mr Cousins said that while his team was taking the new information seriously there was no active third search area.

He said the current searches are based on specific intelligence.

Just watched the latest ITV Calendar update.

DI Cousins has decided that they will dig down on the second site. Previously they said they would just search through the rubble depositions, but they have discovered that some compacted rubble has gone down into the earth, so they feel the need to dig the ground as well.

I get the feeling they did not find anything at the farmhouse? (extension, fig tree)

Doesnt look like it Elainera - DI Cousins said they should be done there by tomorrow an I get the feeling they are just finishing off, to make sure they have covered every possible angle.
I did see, in one MSM report, and cant remember which one now, that Eddie Needham has said that the foundations that he saw at the farmhouse extension are not the ones he laid in 1991.

"Police on the Ben Needham investigation have revealed they have found "60 items of interest" in their search.

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins said they would be taken back to the UK for further analysis when the team returns home.

He said: "While they are not of major interest we need to examine them further."

DI Cousins said the dig will now continue until the end of the week.

Soil from the second site is to be transported back to the farmhouse area later today to be forensically examined in a "sterile" area."

BBM.

Have to wonder why they need to transport tons of rumble up hill to the farmhouse when the second area is quite open and flat....

Also looking at this picture it doesn't scream "sterile" to me. Why did the Mirror journo put that word in quotes anyway?

Thanks for all the updates, I have been looking to see if there was any updates on the news apps I have and I'm quite surprised there hasn't been for a good few days, Bens case really doesn't get much publicity, it's quite sad.
I hope by the time the search ends Kerry can have a definitive answer, even if it means they do find poor little Bens remains.

I was wondering if it was to have everything in one place so that they can keep a check/guard over things at all times.
And, as they began at the farmhouse, perhaps they have more equipment there, to be able to sort through the rubble and earth ?

Otherwise, I agree, doesn't really make sense, neither site seems to be more sterile than the other.

I agree that this case has not received anywhere near the publicity that some others ( mention no names ) had and are still receiving ( for no purpose imo but that's another story ).

I have found ITV one of the best to follow, with their Calendar video updates.

There has been lots of coverage about Ben on the local news up here and I've also seen loads of FB posts about him in the last few weeks.

Seems like Kerry is preparing herself for Ben being found soon. It's going to destroy her whether he is or not. Poor, poor woman.
