An elderly American expat couple have been missing in Greece since last month, and their daughter fears they may have died by suicide.

David Harrison Robinson, 83, and Lucretia Robinson, 80, were last seen leaving their home in the southwest Peloponnese village of Methoni on Jan. 23, an official Silver Alert issued by Greek authorities states.

According to the alert, the couple left home in their electric blue Opel Aglia car “with a possible destination of Monemvasia in Laconia,” and have not been seen or heard from since.

They were officially reported missing by relatives earlier this week.

It is not clear how the Robinsons came to live in Greece. Photos from Lucretia’s Facebook profile show the duo posing together in elaborate costumes.

I hope I look that good when I'm 83! Mediterranean lifestyle or Instagram filters?

What a handsome couple.
I wonder why daughter suspects self harm.

Huh. I have some mutuals with the daughter on social media, we went to school together. Public post shares vague details.

Very eccentric couple! Log in or sign up to view

I see that all these photos in costume were posted on the same day, 12 years ago and the captions seem to indicate it was for her 79th birthday?

Why would your mind first go to self-harm? I find that very strange.

Perhaps there was a suicide note, or there have been past conversations within the family where they have suggested that they eventually intend to take their own lives in a suicide pact. Having cared for his own parents and seen the indignities of old age at close quarters, my father has long expressed the view that he will take his own life to avoid becoming a burden. Thankfully we're a long way away from that point in time, but I'm aware it's a real possibility for the future. He's not mentally ill, and nor does he lack mental capacity, he's just ruthlessly logical in some ways.

My guess is that there have been past conversations along these lines, perhaps a more recent development such as a diagnosis, and now they are missing.

The dates on the photos are weird - if you hover over the little globe icon next to the date, some of them show the actual date they were added, which seems to vary. Lucretia just marked the photo date as the same day when uploading for some reason

''David Harrison Robinson, 83, and his 80-year-old wife, Lukretia Robinson, left their home in the area of Dapia Methoni, in the municipality of Pylos Nestoros, Messinia, in their car, make Opel Agila Diesel 1300, model 2009, blue electric blue, registration number KMT7738. Their probable destination was Monemvasia.

David has white hair, and brown eyes, 1.85 m tall, and is thin. He wears a hat with a large brim. Lucretia has grey hair (she wears a wig), brown eyes, is 5’5″ tall and is thin.''

I agree, for example there is a photo from 09/14/2011 which anachronistically references social distancing.
ETA: there are many other such photos there

ITA, especially when I read this at the end of the article upthread:

"The following day, she shared another post seeking recommendations for a probate lawyer.

The will is very simple and leaves everything to me, but with property in both WA and Greece I want to make sure I’m doing it correctly,” she explained."

Hmm. JMO how about an investigation/search before calling in Perry Mason for probate work? MOO.

Eulogy for David and Lucretia Robinson February 2023

“Life is a complex puzzle, but it can be solved.”

My uncle David and my aunt Lucretia never said those exact words to me, but as far as I can tell, it is what they believed. They taught me that the world was rational and that the motives of people and the forces of history could be understood and mastered if one kept their wits about them.

I was blessed to have an extended family that was very good to me in my childhood. At various times I was painfully lonely and though I had some good friends, I remember feeling very alone more often than is healthy. However, my three sets of Aunts and Uncles near Washington D.C. and in Seattle Washington made me feel loved and welcomed and I would visit them often. Each of the three pairs gave me something different. In the case of David and Lucretia, it was the joy of intellectualism.

Both of them loved science, history, politics, philosophy, economics, and many other topics and they also kindled in me a similar fiery love for things academic. I remember us debating and arguing late into the night on many evenings. I remember them taking me and their daughter Julianna to museums and other cultural locations. During my teenage years, being with them was among some of my happiest moments.

I went on to earn four university degrees and in no small part, they helped launch me in that direction, but that is not all that they gave me. They often talked about what makes for good relationships and how to live the good life. I didn’t always agree with them, but they made me ponder what it means to be good to people and what in life is worthwhile. As I have grown up and grown older, I have thought often about them and talked about what they meant to me with various people. In short, they made a huge impact on me and they helped me hold onto my sanity in my troubled teenage years.

Some years ago, they moved to their beloved country of Greece, where the gods live, and I am no longer in contact with them. They were both fierce people who asserted that life could be mastered if one remained rational. I am told that they chose to meet death the same way that they lived life, on their own terms. I am in shock and I have been thinking about them almost constantly. They contributed a lot to who I am and I will be forever grateful for the love that they gave me.

It is very sad, but not nearly as sad as the state I have seen some people end up in, mentally and physically, in extreme old age. Those who have seen it understand the desire to avoid that fate. It seems like they've made quite a clear and rational decision not to continue into extreme old age. If, for instance, there has been a recent diagnosis of dementia that would be especially terrible for a couple who valued intellectualism so highly.

Asking for probate solicitors at this point does seem strange on the face of it, but we don't know what's been said to make them believe they've taken their own lives. If there was a letter and it also said they'd taken steps to avoid their bodies being found, the daughter might just be as rational as her parents.

The developments in the case of the disappearance of the American couple from Methoni were rapid, as after the detection of their car in Taygetos, a mountain range on the Peloponnese peninsula in Southern Greece, immediately after, the authorities discovered two bodies, which reportedly belong to 83-year-old David Harrison Robinson and his 80-year-old wife, Lucretia Robinson, who had not given any signs of life since January 23.

Jumped together off a rather picturesque cliff. I find myself a little sad their bodies came to rest 80 meters away from one another and am tempted to attach meaning to that.

My god…jumping off a cliff? There’s so many things that could go wrong. i.e. you might not die instantly. Maybe if you dove off head first? I was thinking perhaps an overdose or some such thing. This seems an awful painful way to end life. Perhaps there is some reason for them choosing this way. They looked so much younger than 80’s. Perhaps one of them received a terminal diagnosis.
