The most common motives for murder are money, sex (rape), unrequitted love ....

A friend of mine was killed (stabbed) when the guy wanted her to sign a document that would entitle him to part of her property. She refused to sign and he killed her.

Someone wanted something from Suzanne and she refused - either money or sex. I think she put up a good fight. Someone has wounds on them, bruises, scratches. My hunch is this was personal. jmo

Sunset at Crete on July 2 was 8:39PM. I'm guessing that reports about her being put there at night probably mean "after dark."

It seems like an area which just being there after dark would allow for the solitude and concealment needed to get in and out unnoticed.

Given how obscure and hard to get to ( especially at night) this bunker was, definitely a local. I guess I’ve been skewed because random attacks like these in Greece in broad daylight are rare - especially on the islands. But perhaps it was a deranged person who had seen her jogging the past couple days and decided to attack her for whatever sick reason.

Also- its seems like the "cave" goes much further back than her body was found, if the perp had wanted to do a better job of hiding the body they could have hidden it much better (way in the back under a pile of rocks and debris etc...). Perhaps the theory that she was dropped through a hole in the roof of the cavern is correct because it seems like the body could have remained hidden for a much longer period of time if they had spent just a few extra minutes and was carrying her inside. I know they were likely in a hurry to get out of there but they also must have been confident enough to drive their car up there at night and stumble around in the dark.

Fair enough, was she wrapped in the burlap then or was it just thrown on top of her from the hole.

It might not be random. It might be a local person she knew. She has been going there for conferences for 5 years. She may have formed friendships with staff or other locals. I wonder if police have been able to get into her phone yet? I still find it strange that she changed her clothes and left her phone and money behind and yet no one saw her jogging. Weather conditions were also not favorable for a run. She might have changed just to be in more comfortable clothing during the break and not to go for a run.

Everything being left in her room makes me think she did not plan to go far away. Perhaps she was only planning to walk to someone's room or a staff member's office. This may be the work of someone she has been talking to for 5 years and felt she knew. Perhaps he misunderstood friendliness as something more and then became angry when she finally rejected him. Or perhaps she discovered someone's secret and was threatening to tell?

Although older women can be attacked and raped just the same as young women, Suzanne does not fit the usual target of a random attack like that. She was fit and looked younger than her age but she would not be mistaken for a 20-something by a random predator. For this reason and because random attacks are more rare, I think the motive of the crime may end up being personal. Or at least, personal to the murderer. I hope that if their is any connection between her and the murderer that it will be found.

I do oscillate back and forth. I wouldn’t be surprised as I mentioned earlier, if it were an employee of the hotel or former employee. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were a deranged local. But as you mentioned and I before, it didn’t seem she went very far at all. That has always stayed in my mind. Most likely it was someone as you said she recognized and had her guard down.

ETA: I believe most likely it was misunderstood friendliness or she saw something as well. Perhaps a chance someone paid an employee to do something like this but that’s really out there. This case has however, been bizarre.

It would have taken two men to drag her into the cave through the main entrance. The ground is so rugged, it's really not an easy place to go into at night, carrying a dead body with you. So maybe this tells us it was only one person who did it. In any case, def. in a big hurry.

Yes, I agree. It could be either random or someone she knew. It's hard to guess at this point.

Add to that someone who knew about the bunker and had a car.

I’m very shocked by this case. I’ll be in Crete in 10 days and I’m curious to hear what locals have to say.

The two main things I saw that I haven’t seen before 1.) police believe there were two perps 2.) she was scheduled to give a major lecture two days after she disappeared.
Curious what her lecture was to be on. Could someone have wanted to stop her from completing? Could someone have hired these perps to stop her? Maybe only meant to be a kidnapping that turned deadly. Sounds like she died when her moth and nose were covered, which could be to stop her from screaming.

I'm just scratching my head for a motive here. The whole case seems so mystery novel out there. MOO

A tribute to Suzanne's accomplishments, from her family. Amazingly talented human being.

Relatives -- including her mother, son and siblings -- released tributes to her on Thursday.
Eaton's sister praised her great range of achievements describing her as an "accomplished woman" of "insatiable curiosity."
"She took great pleasure in preparing exquisite meals and had an exotic fashion sense. She loved perfume. She taught and practiced Tae Kwon Do as a second degree black belt. She finished crossword puzzles way too quickly, played concertos, and read extensively. She fit Jane Austin's strictest description of an 'accomplished woman' while maintaining a natural humility and 'insatiable curiosity'," her sister wrote.
Her sister added that Eaton would often worry about not giving her family enough time as well as devoting herself to science.
She continued, "But anyone who read of her accomplishments in the field of molecular and developmental biology, or who witnessed her joy in tutoring, comforting, and inspiring her children, or sharing with, and loving her husband, would not have suspected. With a deep sensitivity and compassion, she somehow made us all a priority."

A very worthy epitaph. What a loss to her family and to the world.

Thank you for this. A profound loss for her loved ones, humanity and science.

The conference schedule was posted here a few times before. Nothing surprising about her giving a plenary lecture - that's what she was there for.
I don't think police are determined yet wheter there was a single perpetrator or more. If she was dropped through the hole in the cave ceiling, it could have been done by one person.

The police will now be trying to catch the perp(s) through their phone pings:

DailyMail.com has established that officers, in the days after mother-of-two Eaton's body was found, walked around the former Nazi bunker, talking to Greece's three major phone companies, Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind, from their own cell phones.

A source said: 'They did this because they wanted to test close to the cave their own phones and co-ordinates and then with the help of GPS mapping and computer data find out which other mobile phones have been in that area in the last week.

American biologist's killer had a CELL PHONE during the murder, Greek police believe | Daily Mail Online

The title is a little misleading. IF the perp had a working phone on them while in the vicinity of the bunker, they might be identified through cell tower data.
