If you google Melisande's case, it's a parental abduction where the mother took her to Russia and the U.S. officials perform periodic welfare checks (4x year) -- meaning, she's not missing, per se. She is confirmed to be with her mother and in Russia.

Wow. I didn't know that. So why is she listed as missing by Interpol if they know where she is? Why don't they get her home? Confused

I presume because Russia doesn't have an extradition treaty with US. Also Russia will not send a Russian child to the US. Here is the article about this case.

""Russia and countries like Russia are difficult because they do not see parental abduction as a crime, so there is no honoring of U.S. custody orders or warrants pertaining to parental abduction," she said. "They don't see it as a problem. Their idea is, the child is with a parent," and so there has been no abduction."

Russia will not return her, but she's listed as missing in the US. The interpol notice is in case she leaves the country (this has happened).

OT, but I'm so sad that she was found with a Roma family. In my view, the Roma are the most universally and unfairly maligned group in all of Europe (even in light of all of the national and ethnic prejudices found there). I can't imagine that the child is of American origin. I worry that this will just add to the prejudices and stereotypes about them.

Thank you for that. I don't mind the title "Gypsy" but many do. My screen name is Spanish for "Gypsy girl". (Pronunced hee tah nah). I'm proud of my heritage. But I'm also realistic. The Roma are a pariah society, never accepted, always marginalized, so they live off the host society but never a real part of it. Historically, Roma have engaged in horse trading, tinkering and entertainment. (Generalization). Poverty has led to a number engaged in criminal activity like drugs and begging.

But my own people were products of the royal edict of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, that Roma must stop being nomadic and any who did would be tortured to death. They retreated to camps and caves and developed the art of Flamenco. That's what my whole family is, professional Flamenco dancers, singers, guitarists. That's how my mom met my dad. She went to Spain to study Flamenco dance and worked with my dad's sisters who began performing as children. My poor uncle left home at 15 to travel the world playing guitar. It was not an easy life. But especially under the Franco dictatorship, it was hard for Gypsies to get jobs. But our people are more prosperous than the street Gypsies and do not engage in crinal activity, at all. We are the same tribe/group as the Gypsy Kings (musical group) from France.

I nearly bought one of those old cave houses Gitana! They are cool in summer, warm in winter and you hardly know they are there! I was living in France, but kind of fell in love with the people across the border. I got uprooted to Germany instead though.

Yes, if mother goes somewhere outside of Russia, presumably the child could be recovered.

You are even cooler than I thought. And I thought you were pretty cool before.

No, that link just reiterates what I said about haplogroups showing ethnicity. It doesn't help at all with an individual's place of origin - eg, a person's haplogroup could show their ethnicity as sub-Saharan African, but they could have been born and bred in London from Jamaican parents.

Strange. I thought I heard it mentioned somewhere.

When they did my mums full DNA search re an illness they found out my mums extended family survived the Spanish flu for example.

Yes, but your mum's extended family surviving the Spanish flu doesn't tell anyone where you, as an individual, were born and bred. It tells you about someone's ancestry, not their place of origin.

Tbh, this girl could be from any European country. I've seen British children with the same hair colour and complexion, in fact one of my best friend's daughter and son are the same as this young girl. So it's just speculation saying, "oh she looks like she's from ...." Because she could be from anywhere.

I sincerely hope her parents are found. If she has been with this Roma family since she was extremely small she must be very confused, frightens and missing the only "parents" she's ever known. Bless her.

Wow! She is such a beautiful little girl and this just breaks my heart. It's almost as if no one is even looking for her, as she is still unidentified. The only two things I can contribute is...I also thought maybe she was of Russian descent and, maybe, have Albinism.

With the punnett square it's so hard to really pin point what her ancestry could be. I myself have an olive skin tone and almost black hair with blue eyes. My oldest is blonde hair, light skin tone and blue eyes. My youngest daughter had jet black hair at birth (now lightened up to a dark brown), the same skin tone as myself and blue eyes. Maybe it simply comes down to a parent not recognizing their missing child if she was taken as an infant? Hair color, features and even skin tone can change as they grow.

I hope this little girl has a happy ending and some where out there...a dream is coming true for a set of parents that is missing their child.

What makes you so sure? She was 2 in that picture. A side by side would be helpful

Like already been discussed, Melisande is not actually missing. She is with her mother in Russia.
And she didn't look the same to begin with.

I think there is a very good possibility the little girl was never reported missing at all.

And I am sure members of her Roma community know where she came from. They need to come forward now. This is a huge problem for them that can only get worse. I hope Greek police offer immunity from prosecution to those coming forward.

Info about where green eyed people are to be found in the world.

Eye color - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm not sure where the green eyes came up. From the official posters it states Maria's eyes are Blue. I know someone highlighted it earlier but I have yet to see it confirmed. Her eyes look blue in all of her pictures.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/20/blonde-blue-eyed-girl-found-in-greek-gypsy-camp

"Greek officials have launched an international campaign to try to identify a four-year-old blond-haired, blue-eyed girl found in a Gypsy camp in central Greece as the couple believed to have raised her face charges of kidnapping.

"They will appear on Monday before a magistrate on charges of abducting a minor after DNA tests revealed they bore no relationship to her," said Lukas Krikos, a police official in Athens. "An extensive investigation is under way around the Roma camp in Farsala, where she was found."

Police found the child, with her conspicuous deep-set blue eyes and pale skin, when they conducted a raid on the settlement 170 miles north of Athens in search of weapons and drugs. The girl appeared disoriented and confused by the abrupt change in her environment when she was taken into the care of a children's charity"

Oh, I so agree with you. I've been thinking about it since I read her story on BBC. I know that they weren't her parents, but I'm so sad for her because she must be feeling an enormous sense of loss. I think the photo initially released to the media is an indication of how frightened and upset she must be.
