Grocery shopping tips during Coronavirus quarantine #2

I still think that the cost of some items is getting higher and higher. And if I can see it, for two people, I can't imagine what it is for feeding a family with kids.

7 kids at home. Most of them are adult or adult sized. Our grocery bill is not cheap even with shopping at Aldi most of the time. It's part of why I made gardening and canning a challenge this year. I did not think far enough ahead or I would have started buying canning supplies sooner!

Yep. I am already planning our garden for next year. Planting significantly more next year. I am actually going to put starts in the house, in February.

Oh my goodness. That’s a lot of people to feed. I have been a few times to Aldi but its no social distancing, little kids yelling, running around and maybe some mask wearing. It made me nervous and I’m not the nervous type. I bailed the last time.
I wish they did curbside!

That's great, Mickey! We planted and grew more this year than ever before. I started weighing veg on June 19th when I harvested my spring potatoes. Today we hit 2,070 lbs of food after harvesting the last of our winter squash! Of course in reality that is far less than 1 lb of food per day per person. I could never be self sufficient with what I've got. But it sure helps and provides so much satisfaction growing it. It was our best potato harvest ever. I think we had like 600 or so pounds of potatoes this spring.

We also just butchered 8 chickens we raised. I don't eat meat myself but am canning chicken soup for dh and the kids. We actually smoked peppers yesterday and today too that I'll dehydrate for chipotle peppers.

It's annoying. Aldi advertises in our area on FB that they are doing curbside pick up. But it's really done by a delivery service where the prices are jacked up and you pay a delivery fee. It's definitely NOT curbside service. But it's like a mile down the road and is hands down the best prices so that's where we do most shopping.

Thankfully they require masks at the store here so I never see anyone without masks there at this point. And, yeah, we go through masses of food! My kids have always been such huge eaters. I started buying from Azure Standard this winter though so I can buy 50 lb bags of rolled oats and beans etc. It makes shopping a lot easier.

Walmart has revised its delivery to compete with amazon, I think.

Usually they ship it. Now they’re doing it like Instacart, delivered directly from the store like amazon does Whole Foods. I think it was $8? They offer an annual plan. I declined as I’ve been slowly gathering my winter items over the summer and have sufficient canned and dry items now as we enter this new season and dynamic with flu season (with a terrible baseline).

These items include canned goods, rice, salsa, noodles, broth, etc.

yes we always check Walmart before we order from Amazon - sometimes items are on sale at Walmart
I don't think they ship to us but it's just 10 minutes down the road for free pickup
we've been doing the same thing as you - gathering a bit extra here and there

I went to the produce pick up at the church today. A bunch of the same thing and I will definitely be sharing!!
  • 7 bags of individual salads that fortunately, the parts we're allergic to are packaged separately. We will pull out those little packets of nuts and dressings and toss them.
  • 5 bunches of celery
  • 4 bags of peeled garlic
  • A bag of mini cucumbers but most were spoiled. I was able to wash some and already cut them up for salads and snacking.
  • A head of purple cabbage.
  • A bag of shredded regular cabbage.
  • A bag of mandarin oranges.
  • A bunch of organic bananas.
  • 3 bags of 1.5 lbs each of yellow mini potatoes.

Uh oh.

Cantaloupe Is Being Recalled From Meijer Grocery Stores

The FDA recall explains that the recalled cantaloupes are being sold at Meijer grocery stores in conjunction with Eagle Produce, a company based in Aguila, A.Z. An investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development uncovered a potential salmonella risk.

Nice haul :) I only get Persian cucumbers when I know I'll use them that day or the next. They tend to become moist or soggy very quickly.

Did you see the post about Miers? Food recall. Spelling may be off or not even your favorite haunt

We rarely get produce at Meijer, but I was glad to know about the recall. DH went to Meijer today after his Friday swim. He got customer limit of three 35-sheet cannisters of Clorox wipes. This bodes well for everyone who has been desperate to find them. DH also got a few things on my weekly grocery list that are less expensive than Nino's: canola oil, kosher salt, brown sugar. I feel like I might be getting a UTI :( and didn't feel like going out today, so well go to Nino's tomorrow for produce, fresh fish, and a few items that are featured on this week's specials.

I hope you're feeling better. I had a kidney infection last week and spent a lot of time sleeping. I happened to be visiting my aunt/uncle at the time. My uncle cooked everything under the sun trying to entice me to eat. I come home so inspired from his cooking and usually with new recipes too! When I popped into Publix on my way home, I had to go down the spice aisle to see if they sold the stuff he was using. LOL!

I bit the bullet and bought a small crockpot. I want to do pulled pork but Publix was out of the "Slow Cookers" pulled pork seasoning packet. It is my absolute favorite. I'm not running all over creation to find it either. I don't want to do a $2 Amazon order. So, I did chicken breasts in broth with celery, onion, garlic, salt and peppercorns instead yesterday.
