Yeah, I believe that just got me off the fence. *Sigh*

Daughter in Philly is getting ice and they are worried about power failures.

Well, here is something else you can look for: Snow Spirals! Found this on www.spaceweather.com - a cool website that has current information about the geomagnetic field, solar flares, etc. This was posted there today, along with a picture of a "Snow Spiral".

"
SNOW SPIRALS: As a winter storm of historic proportions prepares to sweep across the USA later this week, midwesterners should be alert for some unaccustomed sights. One of them is snow spirals. Michael French photographed this specimen in Frederick, Maryland, on Jan. 29th:
"I call them Karra Spirals, after my wife Karra Strickland who discovered them in our yard," says French. "They were all over town, spiraling down the braided metal guy-wires on telephone poles. Here's the curious thing: The wires were spun clockwise, while the snow formations were spun anti-clockwise. The hardened snow spirals were rotated opposite of the metal wire's weave. We also noticed that spirals near the top of the wires were longer (~1 meter) than spirals at the bottom (0.1 - 0.3 meters)--perhaps because of gravity?"
Indeed, the changing wavelength of the spiral suggests gravity played a role in their formation. This could be how heavy snow sags under its own weight when it clings to a braided wire. Why the spirals should oppose the braid, however, is not obvious. Readers with explanations are invited to submit them for consideration."

Hey Nurse!!! I sure wish I could give you guys some Southern Comfort!!! I have thought about all of you who are in the path of this historical storm all day!! If you see any of those 'snow spiral' things, send pictures!!!! It would make a cool science project for our kids, huh?? Stay warm, and be safe!!

We're still in a no precip zone in PA. It's now saying it'll start after midnight... I may bail on work and go home...

whew. Left work around 1:30, had to travel to south side to pick up kids and then to north side to get home. zero visibility. Going to a level 3 snow emergency later on this afternoon. No vehicles to be on the roads that are not essential emergency services. Blizzard white out conditions, slow going getting here. School cancelled tomorrow so ya'll will have me here to annoy ya ;)

Be careful friends.

The snow started here about an hour ago. I'm leaving in 20 minutes. The winds look wicked out there. I'm askeered to drive home. :(

Schools are starting to close for tomorrow. No way I'm coming to work if it's even close to what they're anticipating.

Stay safe!

We don't have snow yet, but all the area schools have cancelled after school and evening activities. The library is closed. So most everything is closing down. The only thing that aren't are the schools. The kids have had so many snow days already they will hold out until they see snow.

N. Indiana update: the snow JUST hit and it looks like all snow hell is breaking loose. It is insanely heavy. Everything that can be closed has been closed. I can only imagine one the wind picks up even more what is going to happen. Wow.

Not much here in Southern Ontario, yet - just powder squalls and a lot of icy wind. Everything seems to be sending out "FYI - We might be shut" notices today, which might jinx it and keep the storm away. They say it'll hit around midnight tonight and last all morning tomorrow.

Spending this evening working on the powerpoint for the lecture I likely won't have to give tomorrow. :sigh:

Daley had a presser earlier. He's basically closing Chicago down for the night.

Oh yeah, we're in whiteout status right now.
Hello 1978! They say it's gonna be like 1967 and 1978 but worse. Yikes!

O/T, but, dayam - Daley is STILL mayor of Chicago? Wow.

ETA: And, yes, I realize there was more than one Daley, but, still, this guy has been around a while.

Oh my....the storm of 78, I so remember. I was 8 mos. pregnant with my daughter, went into premature labor and my dr. got stuck in over a foot of snow and had to walk the rest of the way to the hospital.....all the while I was screaming in pain for pains meds. Wouldn't give me any because of the effect it would have on her lungs. They gave me meds to stop the labor pains but 2 days later gave up and I had a C-section. She was born Jan 20th.

I Pray everyone makes it home tonight. Please be safe everyone. This isn't going away any time soon. At least the roads won't be clear until the weekend. Okc Airport closed and Tulsa too.

Home from work. They gave us the ok to not be in tomorrow. I, silly as I am, didn't realize we were looking at two storm systems... The one that hit last night and the monster that's supposed to start at midnight-ish...

Daley is actually giving up his reign.
His wife is very ill and I think he wants to spend what time he can with her.

I don't count him out on coming back one day tho.
