Groundhog Day Storm May Affect More than 100 Million People

hahaha tell him to enjoy!

I was 10 for the blizzard of 67 so that was a blast for me. LOVED IT. One of my childhood highlights.
The Blizzard of 79 was a doozy and I was living in Wilmette for that one. To be honest I always enjoyed a good snow in myself and went through plenty; a good reason not to go to work. Of course with telecommuting now it isn't even a big deal not to show up. What fun is that?
Not to downplay the seriousness of it all, but there is always a little excitement with a good blizzard too. I got snowed in up in Big Bear during the El Nino season, 97 or 98ish and that was quite a snow season as well. NO way to get out of town or up or down that mountain. that's about all I can handle anymore; I am over snow except for fun and am dying for some of that nice 85 degree stuff to come and stay.

I grew up in South Florida. No snow days, but how we looked forward to hurricanes!

The weather is so strange in Georgia. It gets cold then rains and gets warmer?? I always found it to get cooler with rain except in the summer in S.Fla. I wouldn't mind a little snow but 18 in. no way.

After 2 inches of ice, we're looking 0 degree temperatures so it won't melt. Snow days can be great, ice days, not so much.

I hope I don't jinx you but at least you still have power.

We were out today for a while - Sprout was up to his waist in snow, and loved it. He looked like a tiny voyager or something.

woohoo! we got above freezing today! 35! :great:

Can't have a blizzard in Chicago without some kind of story like this:

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/...osed-due-to-blizzard-20110201,0,5700082.story

I'm curious as to what WS posters think of it? Now, let it be said, people were warned well in advance to try to avoid this particular thoroughfare. It runs adjacent to Lake Michigan. Chicago lake effect snow can be beyond brutal. Anyone who lives there should know that.

Now there is an outcry because the city didn't act fast enough to 1. close LSD down and 2. people were left for far too long in their vehicles (which according to a PC by the city yesterday, many people didn't want to leave their cars).

Thinking this through, I have to side with the city and LE. They were having to deal with the same conditions and restrictions those conditions brought with it. Unless and until someone can fashion a Robocop there was no way they could have saved over 1000 cars in a timely fashion. In a blizzard.

What was so important that these people felt they had to drive through a blizzard to get to? I read a lot of excuses. No one seemed hurt or needed a doctor, as far as I read. I knew this was coming and I'm in GA. Now they are stuck and have towing fees. I saw Jim Cantore on TWC and he could barely stand, he said it was like a hurricane with snow.

We had snow and ice here: ~ 1 inch. Every highway was closed. My husband couldn't get home from work. :(

He's home now but, said he saw lots of accidents.

This is still a hot topic for Illinois & Chicago. Luckily for the stranded drivers, the city waived any towing and storage fees.

I am speaking for just us, and NOT intended to be snarky at all. DH had a critical cancer dr's apt as I commented on this thread previously. We had a pre-surgical date of middle of March.

That said, totaled the Lexus and the conditions are so dangerous. Odot, scraped off all the snow and left 2 inches of ice. We are both so sore and may go and be checked out...:truce:

I spotted this sad, little snowman on my neighbor's patio while walking the dog. It was about 45 degrees out. :)

Oh, how awful, Sooner Fan! Sorry about your car, and hope that you and DH are just sore (no serious damage.)

I can sympathize with you, having to go out in this. For years, I worked as an EMT, and had to go out in the worst weather. People with jobs like that can't just stay in when it gets bad out!

I thought about our police that were out last night down here. It must not have been fun. They ended up shutting down all the highways because of ice.

Yeah, the crazy thing is, we are ins. adjusters...and have handled thousands of wrecks like this....but when it happens to "you" that's a whole 'nother thing! We have had another 5 inches of snow today...I'm not leaving here til the spring thaw. ( Thank God, we just retired)

I think when it's something like that the doctor should be responsible. He/she should have called you guys and postponed. Made it so the first open appointment should be walk-ins included. You could have died. Sorry about the car.

I'm so sorry, Sooner Fan. Now I really feel bad for joking about the cold weather the other night. :o
