Day ends w/ testimony by Alex Cifuentes, a Colombian narco who lived in the mountains of Sinaloa w/ Chapo for several years.

Alex on how he would characterize his relationship w/ Chapo: "He would describe me as his secretary, his right hand man, and his left hand man."

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 40m40 minutes ago
This is Alex Cifuentes with El Chapo and an unidentified woman in the mountains Sinaloa, sometime in the late 2000s. Alex is now 50 w/ gray hair buzzed short, gray stubble, and a pudgy build.

Funny moment came when Alex was asked to identify Chapo in the courtroom by an article of clothing: "I cannot really distinguish his tie's color but it's the first time I've seen him wearing a suit." Guess he's used to seeing him in camo.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 35m35 minutes ago
Alex looked very unhappy to be on the witness stand. He spoke in a detached monotone, in Spanish with a vaguely Mexican accent. He was constantly looking down and frowning, trying to avoid Chapo's gaze.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 32m32 minutes ago
Alex was an integral part of Chapo's business. He was moving cocaine from Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia, purchasing farms to transit drugs in Costa Rica and Honduras, smuggling coke, heroin, and meth to Canada, acquiring weapons, helping w/ the cartel comms system, and more.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 27m27 minutes ago
Alex said he agreed to cooperate after getting a call from his brother Jorge. "He told me, and these are his exact words, that with the Americans I should confess the way I would confess to God. And if you went to trial, I would be the first to sit down and testify against you."

El Chapo’s wife posts photo of her wearing Star of David on Instagram

January 10, 2019

"Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s wife posted a photo of herself wearing a Star of David necklace online Wednesday — despite hastily removing it in court a day earlier in case anyone thought she was Jewish.

Former beauty queen Emma Coronel Aispuro posted an image to Instagram of her sporting the confusing bling as she strutted into Brooklyn federal court for her drug lord hubby’s trial Tuesday, alongside song lyrics in Spanish that translate to: “Many times I asked forgetting how to forget.”

Coronel had removed the necklace in court that day after The Post queried her about it, with a member of the defense team explaining: “She just didn’t want you to report that she was Jewish.”

Her husband’s defense lawyers insisted the six-pointed star pendant was supposed to represent the elements of nature, not make a religious statement.

On Thursday, Coronel once again wore the accessory inside the courtroom — but didn’t have it on display as she entered the courthouse that morning."

'El Chapo' communications expert testifies he suffered nervous breakdown

January 10, 2019

"A communications expert who betrayed Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera and opened his encrypted phone system and spyware to the FBI testified in federal court that he later suffered a nervous breakdown and got electro-shock therapy because he was so traumatized by the experience.

Christian Rodriguez, 32, said in Guzman’s Brooklyn federal court cocaine smuggling trial that his flip was eventually discovered by a Colombian cocaine cartel that worked with the Mexican drug lord, and he had to flee to the United States after learning he had been found out....

It was once expected to last as long as four months, but U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan and prosecutors signaled on Thursday that the government is likely to wrap up its case by Jan. 23. It is unclear how many witnesses Guzman may call...."

Witnesses at El Chapo Trial Reveal Disconnect Between Crimes Committed and Sentencing

• 01/10/19

"The life of Edgar Ivan Galván reads like an Oscar bait movie.

“It all began after my divorce,” said the former Sinaloa Cartel drug and weapons trafficker, who is now serving a very, very long prison sentence.

But Galván’s story does more than prove fodder for the next Clint Eastwood film, it also showcases the importance of a good lawyer, and great luck.

After pleading guilty to drug and weapons trafficking charges, Galván was sentenced to 24 years in Texas. His case almost went to trial. He had a lawyer, who even selected a jury, but decided to take a plea deal instead, believing he would get 17 years, or less....

Galván is unquestionably guilty, but so are the other players in this trial who are facing more serious charges, and somehow similar amounts of time.

Vicente Zambada, son of the cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, is also looking for a reduced sentence....

Vicente Zambada has not been sentenced yet, but if it is determined he adequately helped the government, his sentence will be far less than it could have been. If he gets the best reduction possible, he could be out of prison in just a few years, due to time already served while waiting for sentencing.

Another witness in the El Chapo trial, the cocaine kingpin Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadía (AKA “Chupeta”), who would often traffic more cocaine in one shipment than Galván ever saw in his lifetime and ordered the killings of over 150 people, will get a maximum sentence of 30 years because of Brazil’s extradition laws. He is from Colombia, but Brazil is the country in which he was apprehended..."

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 8m8 minutes ago
Alex testified that his first encounter with Chapo was in 2002, when his brother sent him to negotiate the shipment of 5,000 kilos of cocaine on a tuna fishing boat that Chapo owned. Chapo hosted the meeting at an ostrich farm on the outskirts of Culiacán, because why not.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
After discussing the coke deal, Alex offered Chapo some free advice: Learn to fly helicopters. All of Alex's brothers were pilots. He thought it would be a good way for Chapo to evade capture: "All he needed to do was get get in, turn it on, and fly from one mountain to another."

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 44m44 minutes ago
In April 2007, Alex Cifuentes' brother, Pacho, was murdered in a drug war hit. Pacho was a famous narco said to have once flown planes for Pablo Escobar. But Pacho left behind more than his reputation. He left debts. Alex and other brother Jorge needed to raise $10 million.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 41m41 minutes ago
They turned to an old friend, Chapo Guzman. A few months after Pacho's death, Alex introduced his widow (one of Pacho's 5 wives) to the kingpin and the two soon hatched a deal to ship 3 tons of coke up the Pacific from Colombia to Mexico.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 38m38 minutes ago
In other meetings Alex introduced Pacho's favorite cocaine cook to Chapo & the men discussed plans to make as much as 10 tons of coke a lab in Mexico. Alex also hatched another plan in which his niece's husband would help Chapo move $40 million a month--in cash--down to Colombia.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 37m37 minutes ago
It was in this way, Alex testified on Thursday, that became close to the kingpin--so close, he said, that Chapo like to call him "My right-hand man and my left-hand man." Alex eventually moved into the mountains w/Chapo serving as his aide-de-camp and secretary.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 34m34 minutes ago
Alex did virtually everything for Chapo. He did coke deals for him in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Bolivia. He bought farms in Costa Rica to use as "pivot points" for shipments north to Mexico. He sold coke & heroin in NYC. He even interpreted at meetings in English.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 32m32 minutes ago
Alex is just getting started as a witness (he's back Monday) but he's a hoot. He's not only from the most colorful Colombian drug family imaginable (even mom was involved); he's funny. Appearing on the stand, he remarked that the trial was 1st time he ever saw Chapo in a suit.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 26m26 minutes ago
Alex is in custody b/c his brother, Jorge, was arrested first. He recalled how Jorge called him when they were both in prison--Alex in Colombia, Jorge in the US-- saying he should turn himself in.

"Jorge said, 'With the Americans, I should confess the way I confess to God."

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes Villa took the stand today – just shortly after the man that helped put him in jail (yep, Chapo’s I.T. guy, again) finished testifying. (We already heard from Alex’s brother, Jorge, earlier in the trial.) Alex has just gotten started … he’ll continue Monday.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
When asked to identify Chapo at the defense table, Alex Cifuentes said: “I cannot really distinguish his tie, but it is the first time I see him wearing a suit.” Even Chapo’s wife, Emma, laughed at that one.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes worked under his brother, Jorge, in the family’s cocaine-supplying business in Colombia. Now, as a government cooperator he is looking at 10 years to life.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes said that Chapo often called him his “secretary,” his “man,” or his “left-hand man.” With a bit more respect, Alex in turn called Chapo “El Señor” or “Padrino,” meaning “godfather.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago

Working as Chapo’s “left-hand man,” Alex Cifuentes helped him secure arms in Costa Rica and Honduras, sell cocaine and heroin in New York, install a high-tech communications system in the mountains and translate several business meetings, among other activities.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes once asked Chapo if he could fly a plane, like his own brothers. (Chapo couldn’t.) Flying ensured security in case of an attempted arrest or other problem. If he could fly, “He could get in the helicopter, turn it on and fly from one mountain to the other.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes told his brother to send their own helicopter to increase Chapo’s security. The helicopter later burned at an aircraft hangar in Cualicán, Mexico. No problem. Pedro Cifuentes would later have it rolled off a hill to collect insurance money to get Chapo another.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
In 2007 Alex Cifuentes started worrying over his own security … his brother, Francisco, had been murdered in Cancún. Alex called his brother, Jorge, “about that security issue,” he told the security, mainly: “that they were killing us off.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Jorge Cifuentes estimated they needed $10 million to increase the family’s security. So, after dealing with a stomach surgery, Alex Cifuentes headed to an “interview with Mr. Joaquín Guzmán Loera” to get more work, as well as intel on their brother’s death.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes flew in a small plane to meet with Chapo, landing on a small, inclined airstrip. Surrounded by 50 armed guards, Chapo offered condolences for his fallen brother and asked if he had a widow. (Francisco had “about five wives,” Alex said.)

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes chose among his brother’s widows, bringing Patricia Rodriguez to meet with Chapo and discuss finances and business deals. Patricia would tell Chapo about a pending cocaine delivery, as well as a few of her late husband’s prime properties.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Chapo would also meet with the late Francisco Cifuentes’s favorite cook … cocaine cook, that is.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Chapo questioned Patricia's cited property values and wanted a 50 percent credit on the cocaine. This didn’t surprise Alex, who said that “a good businessman normally tried to get some advantage out of a business deal” … even one to benefit an associate’s widow.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
In the end, Chapo helped his associate’s widow ship 2,951 kilos of cocaine … for the cost of 500 of the kilos.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
Alex Cifuentes never planned to cooperate with the government … but his brother, Jorge, made a few illegal calls from jail to persuade him otherwise. Recalling his brother’s words, Alex said he told him “that with the Americans I should confess the way I’d confess to God.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 1h1 hour ago
And then, to push the point, Jorge Cifuentes told him that if he didn’t cooperate with the U.S. then: “He would be the first one to sit down and testify against me,” Alex recalled. (Jorge told it differently: he was just concerned for his brother's safety, he said.)

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 59m59 minutes ago
Both Cifuentes brothers have denied that while making at least two prohibited jail calls to one another they ever discussed their testimony or squared their stories regarding El Chapo.

Chapo's lawyers seek visa so mother can visit him in US prison

10/01/2019

"Mexico City (AFP)
Lawyers for accused Mexican kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman said Thursday they have asked Mexico's government for help obtaining a humanitarian visa for his mother so she can visit him in prison in the United States....

"We have asked (the Mexican foreign minister to petition US authorities) for a humanitarian visa for Chapo Guzman's mother, Maria Consuelo, his sister Hermilda and his other sister Bernarda," Jose Luis Gonzalez Meza, one of Guzman's many lawyers, told journalists outside the foreign ministry in Mexico City.

"His mother is getting on in years -- she's over 80 -- and is in delicate health and wants to see her son."...

Guzman's attorneys also said they were contesting his extradition as illegal and said his rights have been violated, alleging irregularities in his trial.

Four Guzman supporters demonstrated nearby with signs reading, "Chapo, we love you!" and "Chapo, the people support you."..."

And here’s my story on the two-day testimony of the Sinaloa Cartel’s IT guy, Christian Rodriguez. It’s been an extraordinary few days. @CourthouseNews

Sinaloa Cartel’s IT Guy Testifies in ‘El Chapo’ Trial

January 10, 2019

"BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CN) – In February 2011, Colombian tech prodigy and Sinaloa Cartel IT guy Christian Rodriguez showed up to a meeting in Bogota with someone he thought was a Russian organized crime figure. The guy wanted to hire Rodriguez, only in his mid-twenties at the time, to encrypt his communications, he thought. Nothing new; he’d been asked to do this before.

But he was wrong — it was a sting operation. The FBI quickly flipped Rodriguez, and he began to hack the encrypted communications network he himself had built for Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, leading to some of the most astonishing and intimate testimony yet in the Brooklyn drug trafficking trial of alleged cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Rodriguez, now 32, told jurors this week that Guzman had him install private spyware on the phones of his wife, mistresses and 50 of his close associates. His own alleged spy network now weaponized against him, Guzman, 61, and his 29-year-old wife Emma Coronel, heard their intimate nuptial text messages read aloud, in a sort of surreal monotone, in open court Wednesday by FBI Special Agent Steven Marston.

They also heard Guzman’s text exchanges with reported mistresses, Lucero Sanchez Lopez and Agustina Cabanillas Acosta, the latter of whom appeared to double as a partner in crime, called him “gorgeous” and wrote that she loved him. Guzman appears to have bankrolled plastic surgery for both Coronel and Cabanillas, according to the messages.

Coronel appeared in court both Wednesday and Thursday, greeting reporters with a “muy bien” and a smile Thursday. ..."

El Chapo Trial: What’s It Like to Work for One of the World’s Biggest Narco Traffickers?

• 01/11/19

"Those who have been following the life and crimes of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman have probably heard a great deal about El Chapo the drug dealer, or El Chapo the iced out, high rolling kingpin with a gold AK-47, or even El Chapo, the guy who befriends beautiful Mexican actresses and talks to Sean Penn. Recently, however, during his Brooklyn trial, a little more was revealed about El Chapo’s day-to-day operations, and the courtroom got to know El Chapo, the CEO.

In over 100 recorded calls and countless more downloaded texts between El Chapo and his employees, onlookers caught a glimpse of the way El Chapo handles his business, and in the process came away with a better understanding of what it would be like to work for him.
Here is an honest, assessment of El Chapo, the boss. How would he perform if he were running a legitimate pharmaceutical company—say, one that distributed a lot of legal opiates—instead of an illegal drug cartel?

Below is a categorized assessment of some of El Chapo’s leadership qualities.

Innovative and Willing to Embrace Change...

Calm Under Pressure...

Micromanagement...

Equal Opportunity Employer...

Global Expansion...

Great Health Benefits...

For over two decades, longer than most CEOs, El Chapo ran his business, establishing himself as one of the biggest narco traffickers in the world. He evaded capture for years and staged two enormous jailbreaks.

In another world, Pfizer might have been lucky to have him."

El Chapo trial: An epic narco drama unfolds in a New York courtroom

January 11, 2019

"New York (CNN)In the epic narco drama unfolding in a federal courtroom in Brooklyn, the defendant, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, delivered his usual wave and smile to his former beauty queen wife near the end of a devastating week.

On the stand, a pudgy, baby-faced computer geek from Colombia would soon describe an East German Stasi-like plan to infiltrate every single internet cafe in the capital of Guzman's home state in Mexico.

Riveting accounts of Guzman's paranoia and obsession with the electronic monitoring of his wife, mistresses and associates captivated courtroom regulars this week, including so-called narco-tourists drawn to the Latin American soap-opera atmosphere of the proceedings.

At least one of the 18 jurors and alternates, though, nodded off now and then.

Emma Coronel, Guzman's wife, sat in the second row on the defense side of the vast courtroom. She checked her shiny black hair for split ends and occasionally smiled at her husband as the witness recounted stunning lapses that eventually led to the drug boss' downfall....

On the stand Thursday was an information technology specialist named Christian Rodriguez, a cooperating witness dressed in a metallic gray suit and dark tie. The 32-year-old college dropout from Colombia ran a cybersecurity startup that catered to drug cartels looking for more secure communications.

Over two days, Rodriguez avoided eye contact with Guzman, who wore a blue suit Thursday and sat at the end of the defense table. Rodriguez testified that he was barely 21 when he took an IT dream job that wound up leading to a number of nervous breakdowns and a spot in witness protection.

On the other side of the packed courtroom sat two couples who'd arrived in the predawn hours to witness the long-awaited trial of the man alleged to be the world's biggest drug trafficker. They endured multiple security checkpoints. Before 7 a.m., they stood on a long queue outside the heavy-guarded courtroom for a chance at limited seating.

"We got the last two seats," said a smiling Rosa Alvarez, 50, who dragged her husband to court from New Jersey on his day off from a chemical plant.

"El Chapo is fascinating. This is a telenovela," she said, evoking the schmaltzy dramas that dominate Spanish-language prime-time TV....

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime trial," Alvarez said.

"We'll tell our grandchildren about this someday," said her husband Raul, who is 51....

Rosa and Raul Alvarez stayed until the end of the day. They practically rubbed elbows with Guzman's wife as they left court.

The couple vowed to come back.

"It's like a narco movie," Rosa Alvarez said, "in real life.""

Chapo is only allowed to have visits from his lawyers and 7-year-old twin daughters. His sister Bernarda visited him once but her visa was revoked when she tried to return to New York for a second visit. She had previously been allowed to come and go from Mexico to the US.

Judge Cogan granted permission yesterday for Chapo to have another visitor but the letter from the defense about the visit remains sealed. It almost certainly pertains to his mom, Doña Consuelo, who is over 90 years old.

Chapo's mom might have permission from the judge to visit, but US authorities still have to grant her a visa to enter the country. Given the extreme security and everything that's happened so far, that seems unlikely.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 6h6 hours ago
Should note that info about Chapo's jail visit is speculation. It could have to do with something else entirely, i.e. another psychological evaluation or medical issue, which has come up previously in the case.
