4/ I should explain more. Lichtman's strategy here is not unusual: undermine the cooperating witnesses, convince the jury they are dishonest and that their testimony is worthless. If the jury believes cooperators, that's bad for Chapo. So Lichtman's trying to sow doubt.

Inside El Chapo's trial is like a Narcos plot with cocaine kingpins and tell-all mistresses
With day-after-day of explosive testimony, narco tourists travelled across the country to catch a glimpse

Feb 2, 2019

"For 11 weeks an extraordinary drug trial has played out in a Brooklyn courtroom. The stories of daring prison escapes, grisly murders and cash transfers on the scale of small South American countries are worthy of a TV crime drama.

So it is no surprise that among the benches of lawyers and journalists covering the trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been a new audience: The narco tourist.

“I’ve watched all the TV shows and the thought of seeing El Chapo himself in the flesh was too good to miss,” said Brian, from New Jersey, who asked that his full name not be used as he had skipped a day of work to visit the trial.

He said it was the first trial he had attended and it was worth getting to the courthouse at 6 am in order to secure a seat for the 9.30am start.

“I can only really manage the one day,” he added, “but you feel like you want to come back and see what happens next.”...
Demand for seats was particularly intense last week as the prosecution and defence gave their closing arguments. Journalists and observers arrived before 4 am to ensure they were inside the eighth-floor courtroom of Judge Brian Cogan rather than the overflow facility across the corridor where proceedings are broadcast on CCTV....

Ms Coronel’s confidence and composure impressed Joaquin Martinez, a 55-year-old Mexican who has lived in New York for more than a decade.

“I could smell her perfume,” he told the Associated Press....

“Everyone back home is jealous — they can’t believe I’m at the El Chapo trial,” Greg Gold, a lawyer from Denver, told The New York Times recently. “It’s better entertainment than ‘Les Mis.’”"

El Chapo's wife says he is an 'excellent' husband and father as the jury begin their deliberations in the drug kingpin's landmark trial

2 February 2019

"Emma Coronel Aispuro, 29, said her husband adores their twin seven-year-old daughters Emali and Maria Joaquina

Coronel has attended every day of his trial in Brooklyn and says she does not recognize the man the prosecutor is 'trying to depict him as

She said her life has 'obviously changed' but that she does not consider herself a 'single mother' ...

Part of the evidence presented by US prosecutors indicates that Coronel was at the very least an accomplice in Guzman's escape from Mexico's Altiplano prison in 2015.

She has not however been charged with any crime and showed up almost every day in court to be with her husband....
'He always was a father very present to the attention of our daughters.

'They are the adoration of their father and he is the adoration of them,' she said.

She and Guzman married when she was 18 in a 'simple ceremony'. They had met a year earlier, when she was underage and he was on the after pulling off his first of two prison escapes.

He was in his 40s at the time but the age difference did nothing to stop them becoming close.

Coronel described the start of their relationship as a 'lovely friendship'.

'With the passing of months we became girlfriend and boyfriend. And when I turned 18 years old, we married in a very simple ceremony with family and only close friends,' she said. She gave birth to the girls in her early 20s. ..."

THE DIRTY SECRET OF EL CHAPO’S DOWNFALL
As the Mexican cartel leader’s trial draws to an end, one thing is clear: drug kingpins reign as long as they make their partners money. When they stop, they end up in jail.

"It’s the trial of the century, right?

The satisfying third act in the dramatic rise-and-fall story of a celebrated Mob boss who became one of the world’s richest men, a Robin Hood who gave to the poor, a modern-day Houdini who escaped from not one but two maximum-security prisons.

And it’s great show business with a full cast of characters: a compelling antihero, high-level drug traffickers who “flipped,” a sexy mistress, a beautiful young wife in the gallery.

It has titillating stories of luxury jets, private zoos, a naked escape (with said mistress) through an elaborate tunnel, and wretched excesses of wealth that would bring a blush to the faces of the most shameless “stars” of reality TV.

Yes, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, the infamous jefe of the all-powerful Sinaloa cartel—“the godfather of the drug world,” as one D.E.A. official styled him—is being brought to justice in a trial that will stand as a major victory in the War on Drugs.

As of this writing, the prosecution and defense have finished their closing statements and we don’t know how it will end. Maybe one of the jurors will have been compromised and Guzmán will be acquitted. Most likely he’ll be convicted and sent to prison for the rest of his life.

Whatever the result, in the big picture …

It doesn’t matter.

The Guzmán trial will do nothing to stem the flow of drugs into the United States.

Don’t get me wrong. Guzmán’s conviction for trafficking literally tons of drugs into the United States would be a good thing. He’s not Robin Hood. He’s a killer responsible for untold suffering—surely far more than he’s charged with—and if he spends the rest of his life in prison it will be something like justice.

But his capture has done nothing to ameliorate the American drug problem, and his conviction would be likewise meaningless.

The reason is simple.

By the time of Guzmán’s capture, “escape,” and recapture in the farce that made him a celebrity, he had already lost most of his power...."

Under judicial order prosecutors in the Chapo case have just unsealed several docs. One revelation: Alex Cifuentes, Chapo’s personal secretary, had a procuress send Chapo pics of 13-year-old girls. Young girls could be bought for sex at $5000 a piece. Sometimes they were drugged.

DyaHT3XXgAEsMbs.jpg

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
The procuress was named “Comadare Maria.” Alex used the same name for the intermediary who Chapo claimed paid Enrique Pena Nieto the alleged $100 million bribe on his behalf.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
Also revealed: the FBI agent who led the failed raid with Mexican Federal Police at Chapo’s mansion in Los Cabo’s in 2012 (he escaped out the back into a thorn bush) believed Chapo was able to flee because of “his ties with high-level officials.”

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 12h12 hours ago
New from the sealed docs: Evidence that Chapo raped a cooperating witness at the trial before beginning a romantic relationship with her was withheld from the jury. The only female cooperator was his mistress, Lucero Sanchez Lopez.

More: In an interview with the DEA from prison in 1998, Chapo offered to give US federal agents info on “routes and locations” used by his enemies., the Arellano Felix brothers. That’s very early cooperation with American authorities.

The details here are disturbing — court docs say Chapo drugged the girls by "placing a powdery substance into their drinks" — but the allegation that Chapo had sex with underage girls isn't new. DEA agent Drew Hogan told us about it in the podcast:

The reason this didn't come up during the trial is that one of the cooperating witnesses — Alex Cifuentes — was also having sex with young girls and helping Chapo drug them. The government didn't want that info to come up on cross-examination.

Even after 3 months of covering the Chapo trial, I’ll admit that this one caught me utterly by surprise.

El Chapo Drugged and Raped 13-Year-Old Girls, Witness Claims

Feb. 2, 2019

"Prosecutors at the trial of the drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera spent more than 10 weeks painting the kingpin as the most despicable sort of criminal. Mr. Guzmán, known as El Chapo, trafficked tons of drugs, bribed nearly everyone of authority in Mexico and once ordered his henchmen to incinerate the bodies of two of his enemies in a bonfire, they said.

But on Friday night, two days before jurors were set to begin deliberations, the prosecutors unsealed secret documents revealing a series of even more shocking claims against Mr. Guzmán. The most disturbing were accusations that the crime lord once raped one of his mistresses and routinely raped girls as young as 13 years old, sometimes drugging them by placing “a powdery substance” into their drinks.

Mr. Guzmán’s lawyer, A. Eduardo Balarezo, immediately discounted the accusations, issuing a statement on Saturday that said: “Joaquin denies the allegations.”

In the statement, Mr. Balarezo noted that the claims “lack any corroboration and were deemed too prejudicial and unreliable to be admitted at trial.” He added: “It is unfortunate that the material was publicly released just prior to the jury beginning deliberations.”

The timing of the documents’ release was set on Jan. 23 when Judge Brian M. Cogan issued an order signing off on a schedule that was initially proposed in a joint submission by the defense and prosecution. Judge Cogan’s order came in response to letters from The New York Times and Vice Media complaining about the pervasive secrecy in the case.

The unsealed documents said the claims that Mr. Guzmán raped underage girls came from one of his former personal secretaries, Alex Cifuentes Villa, who testified at the trial that he lived with the crime lord in rural camps in the Sierra Madre mountains while hiding from the Mexican authorities. According to Mr. Cifuentes, a woman known only as “Comadre Maria” regularly sent Mr. Guzmán photographs of girls as young as 13 for him to choose from. For a $5,000 fee, Mr. Cifuentes said, the kingpin and members of his entourage — including Mr. Cifuentes — often had the girls brought into the mountains to rape them.

Mr. Guzmán considered the youngest of the girls to be “his vitamins” because raping them gave him “life,” according to the documents.

Mr. Cifuentes had previously mentioned a “Comadre Maria” during his testimony at the trial. On Jan. 15, he told jurors that a woman named “Comadre Maria” had also served as the kingpin’s intermediary when he allegedly paid a $100 million bribe to the former Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto.

The documents also contained a cryptic reference to Mr. Guzmán committing another rape. In the documents, prosecutors noted that Judge Cogan had kept from the trial evidence that the crime lord had sexually assaulted a cooperating witness in the case before “beginning a romantic relationship with her and drawing her into his criminal enterprise.”

The documents did not identify the witness, but the only female cooperator who testified against Mr. Guzmán was his former lover, Lucero Guadalupe Sánchez López. In an emotional turn on the stand, Ms. Sánchez told jurors how in 2014 the crime lord escaped with her — naked — into a tunnel hidden under a bathtub when the Mexican marines were at the front door of his safe house.

The documents also contained information about Mr. Cifuentes.

They said, for instance, that he once had an argument with his wife because he had “sexually harassed” their babysitter. They also said that Mr. Cifuentes once obtained “snake oil” from a witch doctor and was interested in “the Illuminati, Freemasonry, other planets, other galaxies, UFOs and the idea that there was an impending apocalypse in 2012.”

How did Mr. Cifuentes come by such interests?

“From internet videos and the Discovery Channel,” the documents said."

It's a reasonable question but the timing was set last month and agreed upon, in writing, by both the prosecution and Chapo's own lawyers. Four days after the govt rested its case, this first set of docs was unsealed. There will more unsealed 30, then 60 days, after a verdict.

The case against El Chapo is headed to the jury. Here's what to know

Feb. 2, 2019

"...Having heard hearing testimony from 57 witnesses – 56 called by prosecutors, one by Guzmán's defense team – jurors on Monday will receive instructions on the law from U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan.

Prosecutors have asked the judge to add instructions following the confrontational closing statement by defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman on Thursday.

Lichtman repeatedly suggested that government lawyers suborned perjury by alleged former Guzmán associates who testified against their alleged former boss while seeking leniency for their own crimes.

"They were given the world by this government and then they lied their butts off," Lichtman told the jury.
Prosecutors asked the judge to tell jurors that Lichtman's comments were improper, and to explain that "the government is not on trial."

They asked for similar jury instructions regarding Lichtman's arguments that the government singled out Guzmán for prosecution and hid evidence that might have helped his defense.

Cogan is expected to rule on the request over the weekend after the defense team files a legal response.

After instructions, the jury of seven women and five men will begin deliberations.

They'll have lots to consider.

The jurors must weigh the evidence on 10 criminal counts, including the top charge of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. If found guilty on this count, Guzmán, 61, could be sentenced to life in prison if he's found guilty on this count.

The alleged former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel is also charged importing and distributing cocaine, firearms violations and conspiracy to launder money from narcotics trafficking.

Here's a closer look:

Hey!

YESorNO said:
BBM No- there is a Netflix show called “Narcos: Mexico"- they are talking about the people who watch the program and come specifically to see the trial in NYC, so "Narco Tourist"...

( El Chapo has an interpreter and his wife wears headphones so she hears what the interpreters says...)

Oh - okay on the "Narco Tourist" thing!

And so - El Chapo has an interpreter sitting next to him? Or he too is wearing earphones?

Funny all this disclosures are coming out precisely at jury deliberation time, isn't it interesting? Just wondering about US legal system.

But aren't the jurors sequestered? So they shouldn't hearing or reading about this new unsealed docs....

Boy - can't believe you have been doing the tweets & articles for 3 months, eh YESorNO?? Good job!

El Chapo has an interpreter sitting next to him? Or he too is wearing earphones?

"...Even as prosecutors detailed the cocaine and other drugs they say he sold, and the killings they say he carried out, he sat passively amid his lawyers at a long row of wooden tables, occasionally tilting his ear toward an interpreter..."

So no earphones for him...

And for her- a headset...

"...In a private sidebar conference that afternoon, one of Guzman’s lawyers told the judge that Coronel had been using Google Translate on a cell phone last week to understand the proceedings, because the headset she normally used to listen to an interpreter was not working...."

Thanks for the chocolates...:D
