Have been following the Long Island SK thread somewhat, and thinking of one of the players in Shannan Gilbert's disappearance and death. Her "driver" had previously been convicted on charges related to bringing an Asian woman into the US on a false passport. Although there is no proof that she would be working in the sex trade, that same man is involved in the sex trade.

So thinking re MTR's online posting for an Asian (iirc?) female, am wondering if the ultimate goal he had in mind was to bring her to Canada to pimp her out.

This may have been posted before and I missed it. Haven't seen a lot of this information before. ...

Police found Rafferty had downloaded or viewed a substantial amount of child 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 on his computers, and the vast majority of the filenames suggest a focus on incest.[B/]

Wow... I did read that search terms included incest, but I didn't realise that the *vast majority* of it was that...

And the details of TLMs life that I haven't seen... what a nightmare.

I don't even know what to say.

I wonder if MTR has been checked as a "person of interest" against this unsolved crime on link below? I don't think this missing person is Asian though. Rockwood is about a ten minute car ride from Guelph; lots of people take drives out that way because the landscape is pretty. JMO, I wouldn't doubt if there's been an escalation in MTR's predatory criminal-sexual behaviour. When did he move to Guelph? JMO

I have been wondering what else he has done. I can't seem to find it (a link), but I swear I recall some unsolved sexual assaults in Guelph were once brought up/speculated.

I'd hope his DNA has been checked against DNA in unsolved cases in any area he has lived/lived near...

Was he checking out 'babies for sale' so he could "adopt" one to have "daddy's little girl"? BARF. JMO

Meant to post this yesterday. You will find comfort in this article.

http://www.thestar.com/specialsections/article/114781--a-visit-to-hell-in-bernardo-wing

I want to thank you, Bravo, for posting the link to this article. I had never read it before. It is quite an interesting look into the perspective of what "lifers" in protective custody face. It is a comfort to know that they have entered Hell. It also brings me to wonder if the death penalty would be an easier option to some of these people. Perhaps the death penalty could be returned as an option available at the request of the prisoner. Not that I would like to make it easier for them - but some may choose leathal injection over the rest of their lives under these conditions. If I consider the cost to the tax payer to keep these 🤬🤬🤬 sucking valuable air... I certainly would support the option.

MR didn't have any close friends, or any at all. MR wasn't close with his family. He had his ongoing list of women he used and kept at arms length. Nobody knew the real Michael Rafferty until May 2009 and now all his dirty secrets are out there for all to know.

Mr. secret can't even wipe his arse now without somebody watching :)

He only had female friends and I cant imagine any of them after this even going near him with a 10ft pole. The only one I see going is his mother. If that was my kid......bye bye.... Sick and twisted.

Does anyone know if there are any videos of MTR when the verdict was read? I was on my iPad so I couldn't watch live. I've looked all over the Internet and YouTube and I can't find it anywhere.

TIA!

I only wish there was. I would love to have seen his face and the reaction although I hear there wasnt much of one. After they read 1st degree murder he closed his eyes almost like he knew his goose was cooked and he knew his so called "life" was over....So long douche bag :rocker:

I think that is was possibly for that but also by the comment that was made at the end of that was something along the lines that the girl has to do what he says. I think it was more like he wanted someone that he could easily abuse knowing that he could scare her about going to the police and having her taken back to her country if she didnt do what he said. Sick to even think about. Most of these women will never even hear what a creep he was and there lives have been spared.

The thought of this makes me want to be sick. Do you think he really planned on buying a baby or selling one that he kidnapped? Do you think that Tori was possibly someone he would have after he was done sexually assaulting her or is that too far fetched?

Whats great about life in prison is that the they suffer longgggggggg.. That makes me happier. I bet if you asked Bernardo at this point if he would rather die from lethal injection or rot in prison for the rest of his life, he would take the needle. Right now he is going batty in there and probably losing his mind, literally.... For me I enjoy that better than the needle, its just too bad that we have to pay for it. I wonder after 3 yrs how MR feels about his cell. He probably thought that he was going to get away with what he had done. Well where is that purple tie when he needs it the most??? :jail:

When Derstine says that it is his job to pull hard on the other side of the rope and to keep pulling and that if he doesn't do this because he thinks his client is guilty the whole system falls apart.

I think the reason the "system" falls apart is that alternate scenarios, evidence helps to make the right conviction/exhoneration. If there is automatic thinking because of tunnel vision, it may appear that one is guilty and they really aren't and if they are guilty, they may be overcharged--if that makes sense. MOO.

I think that it makes the jurors really examine all the evidence thoroughly before making a decision because you want to get it right. If the defense attorney gives up because of his opinion of his clients guilt, we may as well not go to court at all. People want to believe their first instinct and if you don't try to get them to "think" about possible other reasons, the outcome or "system" of justice falls apart. MOO.

Having said that, the evidence against MTR was overwhelming and it was corroberated by TLM--even Derstine admitted to that in his post-verdict interview. He is relieved to let go of this one, compared it to Marley the ghosts chains from Scrooge. MOO.

I think Derstine did great for what he had. The evidence was overwhelming and he fought for MTR even thought he knew he was guilty.

He put up a good fight.

Good thing these jurors made the right choice. I cant imagine how they would have felt if they didnt.

I would never want to be a juror or a defence lawyer

I was wondering, the family has held prior vigil in this same parking lot right?
(I didn't go to that one)
Why I ask is, do the peeps PARK in the parking lot there? or leave the parking lot void of cars for peeps?

Was also wondering, I'm not sure what business exactly is across the street but if there are a few of us going I'll bring a W/S plackard to congrate at then walk across the street. If that sounds like a plan.

Could a Woodstockian let me know is it KFC across the street? (google mapping)

From the article:

That article is kinda vague regarding if MTR's mom was getting her drugs legally or illegally. If she was getting her drugs illegally, I wonder if that had anything to do with why she continued to let him live with her even though he wasn't paying rent?

The part about mom and son sharing pills first shocked me, and then more or less clarified what sort of relationship MR has with his mother. Most moms (I hope) would do whatever they could to help a child (even a 28 year old child) with a pharmaceutical drug addiction. MR was probably complaining that the mean doctors wouldn't give him the specific drugs he wanted so, instead of being told to deal with it and listen to the doctors, his mom helped him get the drugs he decided he needed ... enabler.

They probably wouldn't want us sleuthers to be jurors anyway. Has anyone here been chosen for jury duty and asked if they follow crimes?

How does one survive without speaking to anyone? Can they have conversations with others around them (quality people you know)? I imagine not many people will be visiting him. MOO.

They can talk with other prisoners with earshot of their cells. The sensory deprivation is part of trying to keep sane.

Watch out--talking about mom is off limits. I don't know about this context but I think we aren't allowed. You may want to delete this in case. You don't want to not be able to discuss tomorrow.

Here is the FB link for the vigil. It mentions that the organizer is planning to call the city today about having part of the street in front of the parking lot closed Saturday evening. The stores will be open, I think, so there will be shopper's cars in the parking lot, at the very least.

I think there is a KFC right there, also a DQ and Swiss Chalet... and William's Coffee Pub and Timmies within the next block or so to the east.

We plan to go a bit early, find parking on a side street, then walk to one of those eateries for a bite to eat while we wait for the vigil to start. I'm hoping lots of people show up for this, and if so, parking may be hard to find.
