Hello WS Community,

Longtime lurker and first time poster here. I've been researching an interesting line of inquiry regarding the relationship between the infamous Herman Mudgett (HH Holmes) and his housemate/fellow border Fred W. Ingalls. They both came from a similar area in New Hampshire and both trained under the same New Hampshire doctor before heading off to med school in 1882. Mudgett and Ingalls lived on Colchester Ave in Burlington (I live only a block away) and rented rooms from a Mrs. Brew. This info came from a 1895 interview by a Boston Glove reporter. Using ancestry, I was able to identify the house as 72 Colchester Ave. Some of the reporters details were incorrect, such as the name of Brew's husband, but everything else checked out.

Mudgett and Ingalls fought often. Ingalls received two black eyes after using Mudgett's mustache wax without first asking. He later retaliated by calling out the married Mudgett while he was spending "time" with the young daughter of the landlady. Needless to say, they didn't have a great relationship.

Mudgett left UVM after one year and went on to the University of Michigan. Ingalls graduated in 1884 and returned to central NH to set up shop as a physician. Here's where things get strange. Ingalls apparently died in March of 1894 of Catarrhal Gastritis and was quickly buried. After researching this cause of death, it seems to me that this is often listed as a cause of death with arsenic poisoning cases. Has anyone encountered this before?

Also, he died in Kingston, NH. One of the last places Holmes visits "on business" before being arrested is Kingston and his hometown of Gilmanton. The two obviously had a bad relationship in med school, but would it be a stretch to link the death of Ingalls to Mudgett?

Has anyone had success researching life insurance claims? Would a few inquiries with life insurance companies be worth while? Would major firms still have info dating back to 1894.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Although a stretch, I'm still hoping to sniff this one out.
