The thing that struck me the most about this series was the pain and suffering visited on so many people - and for what?

Agreed, and it was also amazing to see how difficult life was back then.

i felt so bad that Cotton Top was hung. i know he killed that girl but i don't even think he did it on purpose. he was reacting to what he was told to do and it scared him when they came out the door. on his own i don't think he would have hurt a fly.

I don't think he had the mental capacity to understand it.

I couldnt help but think that Jena Malone (played Nancy McCoy) would make a perfect Casey A. (didn't she look like this at trial????)

Perfffecct.

Runs to get out of the way of Steely!

The guilt of the Hatfield and the emotions of the McCoy is what I believe started everything snowballing.

IMHO of course

I thought it was the noballing that started it.

OMG! I almost forgot to add that the following post contains SPOILERS....so if you haven't seen the program yet, then you may want to stop reading now!

I don't know about anyone else, but even though the entire mini-series was filled with gut wrenching moments, it was the ending that haunted me the most. The death of Frank Phillips' character (if the program was accurate) just came out of nowhere. It sent chills up my spine.

Even more haunting was how Randall McCoy basically drove himself insane by the end and ended up going in a blaze of glory so to speak. And how about the scenes where Devil Anse took Johnse "fishing" (yeah right) and spent the entire time with his hand on his gun? Did anyone else think that those scenes in particular were acted beautifully? Of course, I especially appreciated towards the end when McCoy was sending his wife to an institution and she called him out by looking him straight in the eye and saying, "you aren't sending me away to 'get better'. You're sending me away so that you can go to hell with Perry Cline." LOL. How perfect!

All in all, I really enjoyed this mini-series. It was just one of the many gems that I enjoy on the History channel.

What I liked most about the series was how it showed that both families were culpable and the heads of neither had clean hands.

When it started my husband was ticking off what he thought the real reason the feud started was and I turned to him and said "it was the pig" (my family is from West Virgina of course I knew that. lol)

And was it not worth the three days just to see Kevin Costner in something GOOD for a change?

Both families took the whole concept of "an eye for an eye" to a whole new level. Did they ever say how many people died in this feud all together?

I LOVED this mini-series!! I too was curious about the accuracy of the film and did a little reading up on the subject. As it turns out, the film was surprisingly accurate, lol. From what I read however, the bit about Randall McCoy being the sole survivor of his military unit and then taken into Union custody, was pretty much dramatic license. It has been speculated that McCoy also deserted.
From what I could determine, no one really knows what started the famous fued. Most believe that it was a combination of events, including the lawsuit between Devil Anse and Perry Cline, the ridiculous "stolen pig" debacle, and the ill fated romance between Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield.
I'm certainly no historian and the articles that I've read may be just as fictional as the mini-series. On a side note however, I totally agree with Steely Dan! Jim Vance was my least favorite character, and I just couldn't help thinking that if he hadn't been around in the first place, the fued may never have gotten off the ground at all. JMHO as always....

And they're all still mad at eachother. Can't somebody just replace the dang pig? ok 3 pigs. the original and 2 for interest.

Yeah, so much for the idea of the "good ol' days.":what:

Since I live in KY (the state that kept trying to intervene) there are still descendants of both family around and this story has never really died.

Oddly enough, I felt that both families were idjits after a point (reminded me of some of my family reunions:woohoo:) but was really disgusted at the election day fiasco when the McCoy boys ganged up on the one, older Hatfield. That seemed to be a tipping point.

No they're cool with each other now; http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-3480_162-558660.html

...The two southern families became embroiled in one of the longest and most infamous family feuds in the history of America. Although they ended the feud in 1891 and shook hands in 1976, Saturday, June 14, 2003, marked the official end to the Hatfields and McCoys' feud when the families signed a truce, in an event broadcast by the The Saturday Early Show. ...

I know Randall McCoy was livid about the killing of his sons, but by today's and yesterday's law they were guilty of murder and would get at least life sentences today. In Kentucky or West Virginia they were guilty of murder. The Hatfield's sort of took liberty with the law, but the charge was fair. JMO

I believe I read 13 people had died as a direct result of the fued. I don't have a link and am going from memory so I'll also add JMO. I loved this mini-series, my whole family sat by the T.v and ate our dinner in the living room! It really was great family time.

I just had a visit from a camp neighbor and his mother was aHatfield. In 2009 62 Hatfields signed a treaty with the McCoys. Some tiny tidbits from him was interesting. The movie is close to the history from his families view also.

I did the exact same thing with IMDB. The only one I recognized at first was Kevin Costner.

The History Channel ran a documentary on the Hatfields and McCoys this afternoon. It was narrated by Kevin Costner. Unfortunately it was already an hour in and I was laying down for a nap and listened to the last hour. It was a different story from what the movie was, as far as who did what in some instances. :waitasec: They aren't rerunning it tonight so I don't know if I'll ever get to see the whole thing.
