Horry County police respond to residence of Sidney Moorer, woman charged
Posted: Tuesday, August 4, 2015 10:07 am | Updated: 10:20 am, Tue Aug 4, 2015.

Sidney Moorer said he heard a noise shortly after 3 a.m. Monday and realized it was someone trying to get in his front door.

He got to the door, partially opened it, and a woman outside was demanding to come in, saying the people in the house should know who she was, Moorer said.

He and his wife Tammy are out on bond, charged with the 2013 kidnapping and murder of Heather Elvis. Elvis has not been found since she disappeared December of that year.

Moorer said since their arrest in February 2014 and their release from jail on bond this past January, his family has constantly been threatened and he’s had to call the police numerous times for people coming onto his property.

“I didn’t know who this woman was but she seemed pretty agitated that I wouldn’t let her in the house,” he said. “She seemed pretty intoxicated. But with all the threats we’ve had to deal with, I couldn’t take any chances.”

Sidney and Tammy Moorer, the Myrtle Beach couple charged with murder and kidnapping in the Heather Elvis case, were granted permission to leave South Carolina on Sunday for a job interview in Florida, a judge ruled Thursday.

The couple petitioned to have their bonds modified to allow for Sidney Moorer, who does restaurant repairs for national chains such as Red Lobster, to go to Orlando, Fla., for the job interview and stay there a week. Their attorneys said they have not been able to find work in Horry County because of the publicity involved in the case.

“They have really been struggling financially. All we are asking is so he can work to earn a living,” Sidney Moorer’s attorney Kirk Truslow said during Thursday’s hearing in Charleston.

Horry County’s home detention “can monitor him anywhere in the country,” Truslow said, and declined to name the company Moorer is interviewing with to prevent interference by others.

Sidney Moorer is scheduled to appear in an Horry County courtroom in October, but it won't be for the Heather Elvis case.

Moorer says he’s not responsible for more than $6,600 in debts incurred while in jail during the pending murder case, according to recently filed magistrate court records.

Portfolio Recovery Associates/Synchrony Bank, a Greenville-based debt collection agency, filed suit in July, saying Moorer owes $6,603.32 from an unpaid credit account with Toys R Us.

In an Aug. 21 answer to the suit, Moorer checked a box that says he denies responsibility for the debt.

“I was incarcerated on false charges and was unable to pay,” Moorer wrote in court records. “I want a trial.”

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The attorney for Heather Elvis murder suspect Sidney Moorer confirmed that orders have been signed to modify his client’s bond to allow him to live and work in Florida.

Attorney Kirk Truslow stated that the order allowing Moorer to move to Florida for work was signed and filed Tuesday.

The motion requesting the bond modification was filed on August 18, and appears to have been approved and filed by the Horry County Solicitor's Office on Tuesday. The modification states that Moorer has found employment in Florida that would permit him to provide for himself and his family.

Under the modified conditions of the bond, Moorer will still be monitored by Home Detention, will be required to provide Home Detention his Florida address, and his employer's name and address. If his employment or living status changes, he must notify Home Detention. Moorer must also check in with Home Detention at least once each month.

Civil suit filed against Sidney Moorer postponed until January 2016

A civil suit filed against a co-defendant in the Heather Elvis murder case has been rescheduled for Jan. 11, 2016, according to judicial records.

Sidney Moorer, 39, of the Myrtle Beach area, is facing charges of murder, kidnapping, indecent exposure and obstruction of justice.

Elvis was 20 years old when she was last heard from in the early morning hours of Dec. 18, 2013.

The civil case against Moorer was filed by a creditor of Toys R Us. It says Moorer owes about $6,600 from an unpaid credit card bill.

Moorer has previously filed court records saying he shouldn’t be held liable because he was in jail and couldn’t make payments. He has requested a jury trial.

In an Aug. 21 answer to the suit, Moorer checked a box that says he denies responsibility for the debt.

“I was incarcerated on false charges and was unable to pay,” Moorer wrote in court records. “I want a trial.”
