Her pit bull pets kill Middleburg woman

  • #61
Good point...... so,, if they won't outlaw pit bulls.. then the least that needs to be done is to make it illegal for people to own intact male pit bulls. AND outlaw the incessant breeding of the damn things. But of course, all sorts of idiots will 'go underground' and breed them anyway,, if only to say 'F-you' to 'the man'. Pit bull owners just LOVE to play the 'persecuted victim' role, along with their dogs.

We're getting away from the topic of this thread, but that's a good point too. We already know we have a huge problem with pet overpopulation in this country. I think legitimate (not backyard!) breeders should be licensed and anyone else who owns an unaltered dog should be fined out the wazoo. That would kill two birds with one stone.

Bless your heart SassyT. You have sure been through your share. :blowkiss:

Hi girls:D had to go back work. You know how those blasted bosses can be...sighhhh:angel:

Saw the new topic on how many pits attack in pairs. Thomas was attacked by a pair.

The first lawsuit papers were signed last week, waiting to hear back from them on what they are going to do. I will let you know as it goes along what is happening.

hugsss to you all...Sassy:blowkiss:

A friend of mine used to volunteer at the Humane Society, the workers there told her that (at that time, 10 years ago) to get rid of the shelters and find every dog and cat a home, EVERYONE across the United States would need to adopt 28 dogs and 121 cats. That's EVERY person, not every family.

That's an extremely sobering statistic.

Her husband is a Swede, she asked him to go to the shelter to adopt a dog and he asked "What's a shelter", she told him that's where all the homeless animals. He couldn't understand the logic that there were so many homeless animals that they needed to build all these shelters for them. Just goes to show...

On one of my dachshund forums, there's a lady from Europe (Finland, I believe) and she told us they're only permitted to breed a litter of puppies with approval from their national breed club. They don't have backyard breeders there who're out to make a quick buck. At first, I thought this was outrageous, but I'm coming to believe it's needed if we're ever going to stop euthanizing millions of unwanted animals. My dogs were promptly spayed/neutered as soon as they finished their show careers. It made a big difference in my male's temperament. He's much more mellow now. No more of that nasty male dominance aggression we were discussing!

Both of my boys were altered. My hubby wanted to wait a year so they'd get the testosterone for muscle but the vet said that wasn't needed.
My Rottie was done when he was about 8 months and the Pit was done at 5 because he was showing toy agression. That "nipped" that in the bud right off. LOL

I am wondering if this woman's dogs were altered. It does make a huge difference. My male was done at 5 months but he never showed agression before that either. He is very submissive and even the vet and our dog school people can't believe how he submits to every dog that comes near him. He just wants to play so he submits to be their friend so he can play with them.

Most Rescues wont take in aggressive dogs, they already have their hands full and an aggressive dog is a liability for them. The best thing to do is have the dog PTS if has shown aggression.
But from reading the original story, those dogs never showed any aggression, that is scary.

That's exactly whats so scary about pits!!! Some have never shown aggression before and it seems they go instantly nuts and kill without warning! What sets them off like that? It's not even progressive, it's like they lose their mind and turn on their family.

I can tell you that part of this lady's problem is that (1) she had more than one pit and they formed a "pack"; (2) since she allowed them the freedom to do whatever they wanted in her house (sleep with her, lay on the furniture, etc.), she gave up the power of being the "alpha" dog in that pack and they took over and killed her. AT the very least if you're bound and determined to have a pit bull, DO NOT have more than one and for crying out loud, make sure they know their place in the pack - and that would be the lowest on the totem pole!!!

Hmm, mine know their "place" on the bed is the bottom. Does that count?
And they have to get off the couch when company is over. LOL

I've also never let them have a "tug of war" toy to play with together. When hubby or I play with them with one, they submit on command. We never try to "win".

Lurker,
How do you get yours not to play tug of war over toys? Our pup is 12 weeks and our male is 2 1/2 years. Whenever one of them picks up a ball, frisby, anything they find it the yard it could be a piece of garbage the other one wants it and the pup will chase the older one all over the yard jumping on him trying to take it.

I'm talking more of the rope variety. They'd make some pretty nasty sounding noises over those so I took them away. They both love stuffed animals but the Pit rips his to shreds. The Rottie takes care of his stuff. The Pit is more playful, he'll chase the balls and the Rottie just watches. He's to "dignified" for that. LOL
I've never had a problem with either of them over treats. We'll give them pig ears and bones and they'll each go to their corner and don't come out until they're done.

Jeana, thanks I think. LOL This is my second Pit. The first was a female that we had for 16 years. They're both purple ribbon bloodlines and can be traced for generations. I had my misgivings at first, the female was hubbys when we dated. She was an absolute AWESOME dog and I truly beleive she saved my life one day. We lived in an apartment and I'd walk her through a small patch of woods. She would wag her tail at everyone we encountered until one day. A guy came down the trail in front of me, he had one hand behind his back like he was tucking his shirt in. My Pit went on full alert and jumped in front of me snarling and growling. It freaked me out. The guy still came closer and asked for a light and the dog was going nuts but she never lunged, she backed into my legs and kept growling and every hair was up from her nose all the way to her tail. He finally seemed to notice her and turned around, there was either a gun or a knife in his waist band. I don't know what, if anything he would've done to me but I'm glad she was there.

Yea mine do fine with bones too, the pup will take hers under the car and then go take my adult dogs and he just lets her have and she takes it under the car to so he can't get either one because he can't fit under the car. They never have a problem with food or treat agression. They both know to sit before they can have a treat. The funny thing about the toys, my older pit had a stuffed bear that he loved he slept with it in his kennel and he never tore it up but every other stuff toy he has, not surew what was special about this one. Well when the pup was about 9 weeks she got it out of his kennel and ripped it to shreds in the kitchen. I walked in and there is my older one sitting with what was left of his bear in his mouth with the most defeated look on his face and the pup sitting in the middle of all the stuffing. I should have took a pic, we still are laughing about it.
