SIX calls for help? Don't recall seeing that before. I really wish Mary and/or Sandy would join this forum so we can get first-hand accurate info. I believe one of those television crime shows would love this story because it's so weird.

I don't get this

He calls six people and no one came to help except the nephew(IIRC)
And no one bothered to follow up with his family later in the day?

Still thinking on this case. Is it possible that the 2008 legal problems that Jeff and Mary Lou were involved in have something to do with his disappearance? It seems that the last seven years have been people problematic for Jeff. Nonetheless, wish the local news would keep active his status as still missing. Anybody here that lives on the Big Island have any updates? Thanks.

I was in Waimea for the last three months and didn't hear or see anything locally. Not a thing. Anyone else?

Could you elaborate on the problems over the last years? They certainly could have had an impact on a motive for the disappearance or foul play.

I am referring to the 2008 Hilo court case and subsequent restraining order against Jeff and Mary Lou, and the recent problems he had with his employees at his plumbing company. The fact that he was also apparently under psychiatric care seems to point to a lot of volatility going on in his life. His boots showing up later, after several people searched the area where his truck was located, seems to suggest an odd revisiting of the scene? Did he possibly flip out?

Are there any missing posters up with Jeff's picture anywhere? You would think there would be more of an effort to find him. With his mother hiring a detective a while back, it is odd that nothing more has surfaced in this case--information, etc.

Curiously, the Big Island seems to have become a place where just about anybody can disappear and not be on much of a community radar unless a visible murder is involved. The place has really changed since the 70s when I lived in Hilo.

I tried emailing John Burnett, the reporter for the Hilo Tribune Hearld. I thought he might be willing to contact the Hilo detective handling the Meek case, and do another story updating any new information. At least it would keep people from forgetting about Jeff Meek. The email account for John Burnett bounced back twice the email I sent him. I am going to call the newspaper and leave Mr. Burnett a voice mail if I can't reach him personally.

Plumeria, Unfortunately you're right--Jeff Meek is slowly becoming a missing person statistic. When information dries up so does public interest. Funny how some families do everything in their power to keep their missing family member in the public consciousness, along with pressuring law enforcement to keep searching.

For anyone still following what happened to Jeff Meek, I received an email from reporter John Burnett with the Hilo Tribune-Hearld this afternoon. In response to my request that he approach the detectives handling this case and publish an update letting the public know what is currently going with any search efforts--he said, "I'll talk to my editor."
Hope something of value happens.

Reporter, John Burnett responded to my follow up email today--he said, he contacted the Hilo detective in charge of the Jeff Meek case, and the detective said there is nothing new. It is not clear if Jeff is voluntarily missing or foul play happened. Despite wide public interest in the fact that Jeff Meek is missing, there is a lack of information at this time. Therefore, no investigative report will be done. If anyone is interested in reading Mr. Bennett's email to me, drop me a line and I will forward it to you.

There was a memorial luncheon for Jeff June 6 at his church. I don't think his family would have a memorial for him if they thought he was still alive. His mother had hired a PI and, IMO, rumors...gossip etc might have come into play for their belief that he is gone. Unless someone talks, I don't think this case will ever be solved.

Thank you for this info. It's a shame that so many people disappear on the Big Island--and law enforcement takes a wait and see approach rather than vigorously searching for them. The number of people still missing with no clues as to what happened to them is extremely disconcerting, considering the fact that they vanished on an island-a very contained space.
