HI - Jon Tokuhara, 47, acupuncturist, Murdered in his office, Honolulu, Jan 2022 *arrest*

AUG 5, 2023

An Oahu Circuit Court jury is deliberating the fate of Eric Thompson, described during closing arguments Thursday as a liar and a spouse-controlling perfectionist who tried to fix his marriage through murder.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Benjamin Rose told jurors that 11 days before Thompson allegedly shot and killed his wife’s lover, Jon Tokuhara, he made her sign an agreement relinquishing custody of their 3-year-old daughter if they got divorced. < >

Thompson’s testimony that he went to the Waimanalo Convenience Center to dump several bags of bricks is bogus, Rose said, noting that surveillance video of him leaving his house that day revealed nothing in the bed of his truck.

Prosecutors told the jurors that Thompson lied repeatedly while on the witness stand about where he was the night of the murder and that he was in fact, still angry his wife had an affair with the victim, Jon Tokuhara.

Defense says the prosecutor’s evidence has many holes that have not been explained, including security footage that they say shows Thompson at three different places at the same time. “How can he be here by the door? They are walking along by the steppingstone there and the truck all in roughly the same time...." < >

Closing statements in the Eric Thompson murder trial

I know the police work had been questionable from the start with the presence of someone known to the victim when the police investigated the crime scene. And the officer body camera turned off for 10 minutes.

But the DNA was found on the hat. I don't get how that would be there if ET wasn't the murderer.

Sometimes, it seems the Jury wants video and audio of the murder coupled with a full and honest confession before they'll convict. A retrial is expensive for the State. So frustrating!

The Evidence:

"The prosecution pieced together video surveillance footage from businesses near the area of Tokuhara’s office and Thompson’s neighbor’s home. The surveillance cameras caught a man wearing a bucket hat, face mask, carrying a large brown paper bag walking into the clinic and out in 48 seconds. The hat fell off and was later recovered with DNA linking Thompson to the hat (three hair strands)

A white four-door Chevrolet Silverado work truck was seen leaving the area of the clinic at about the time the suspect wearing the bucket hat was seen leaving the scene of the crime. The truck had a running board, like the truck Thompson owned and drove that same night.

Thompson’s alibi was that at the time of Tokuhara’s murder, he went to the Waimanalo convenience center to dump bags of bricks, then to to buy a few items. But surveillance video showed Thompson’s truck bed was empty when he left his house.

Several strange moments.

- an acupuncturist who had affairs with several clients? They have to have license requirements, less stringent in Hawaii than in some other states, but ethics is still required.

- and a psychic who said it was OK to have an affair? I always thought they say “a new interest is in the cards”, or summon spirits, but not give life advices themselves.

Is it possible that ET made his wife sign the post-nup because he knew it would be necessary in his future in order for her to stay with her child, she'd never divorce him? He did everything he could to cloak himself from this murder.

Does the wife look like she suffers Stockholm Syndrome? Did they embrace when the Judge announced a mistrial? Sure doesn't look too happy in this image. He's a control freak - that much has been proven. Did she seek a psychic because she has a very low self-esteem and does not trust her own judgement? Had ET eroded her self-confidence so she sought permission to have an affair outside of the marriage?
