Still Missing HI - Kytana Ancog, 18 months, Aiea, Oahu, 31 Jan 2021 *Father arrested*

Police have also arrested a second suspect — Scott M. Carter, 48 — on second-degree murder charges.

On Friday night, police and K9 units searched that home along Kaulaniahee Place. There was no sign of the child. Sources say Rodrigues was taken into custody Saturday in Honokai Hale.

He was arrested about 5 p.m., though no charges have yet been filed.

Honolulu police have released few details on the case. The investigation is ongoing.

Defense attorney Megan Kau said that one of the men may been arrested because police believe he may have helped cover up Kytana’s disappearance.

But she said that even if the accomplice wasn’t involved in harming the victim, he still could face a life sentence if convicted.

“Even though they didn’t do anything to the child, it makes that person liable for same act murder the second degree,” she said.

Rodrigues is a convicted felon with a long criminal history involving offenses for drugs and firearms.

CrimeStoppers Honolulu says the reason a Maile Amber Alert was not issued for this case is because early on, there was no indication the toddler was abducted and facing immediate danger.
Father of missing toddler, 2nd suspect arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder

From the video - Ashley Ancog dropped Kytana off at Travis' home. After not hearing from him for two weeks, a missing persons report was filed for Kytana.
How are detectives so sure she is deceased if her body hasn't been found? Do I really want to know the answer :(

This is just heartbreaking, once again - failure to protect a child.

Imo I'm thinking it is related to the evidence they have that an event/incident took place Feb 5-6th.

Police officers located the toddler's father Saturday Travis Heffelinger at a Pono Street home. He was questioned by police officers and after investigation revealed foul play was involved. Heffelinger was arrested for second-degree murder.

After further investigation, a second suspect was identified and officers arrested a 48-year-old man, Scott Michael Carter, for murder in the second degree, just before midnight Saturday.

HPD says an incident occurred in the time frame of Friday, February 5 at 12:01 a.m. until Saturday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m.

Details of that incident are not released.

On Wednesday, February 10, a missing person case was made for Ancog through third-party information.

Father of missing toddler charged for second-degree murder; bail set at $2M (hawaiinewsnow.com)
  • Bail for Travis Rodrigues has been set at $2 million.
  • Kytana is still missing and LE has not divulged any circumstances of the crime. But legal experts said the case is likely based on statements that Rodrigues made to his relatives about Kytana’s whereabouts.
  • “Given what’s happened already in the case, if there were some admissions of responsibility or some type of explanation to a family member justifying what happened, that’s certainly more than enough to charge the case,” said defense attorney Myles Breiner.
  • Police have also arrested and charged the second suspect Scott M. Carter for first-degree hindering prosecution. His bail has been set at $1 million.
  • HNN reached out to Ancog’s relatives, but they had no immediate comment. Leroy Rodrigues Sr., Rodrigues’ grandfather and head of Island-Wide Mortuary Services, also declined comment.

Grandfather.

@PommyMommy, who told LE and/or reporters TR is Kytanas Dad? Even Ashley's Mom said his name isn't on her birth certificate? IMO, he is a drug connection.
I would say whoever furnished the "third party information" that caused the missing person case to be created. Whoever that is. MOO

ETA: Found this...

Scott Michael Carter

Dating back to 1993, Carter has been charged with criminal contempt of court, burglary on three separate occasions, assault in the third degree, abuse of a family or household member, and more.

A family friend reports seeing Kytana with bruising on 1/31. She says her son picked up KA's mom from the hospital & brought them both to her house. Reportedly, baby had been staying with "friends" while mom was hospitalized. :(

Woman comes forward to discuss Oahu toddler's disappearance
Thanks for the link, Michelle. This is so heartbreaking. Seems to just get worse every day. I am worried that they may never find Kytana. :(:(:(

Family friend says missing toddler was ‘all bruised up’ before disappearance (hawaiinewsnow.com)
[...]

Kytana was last seen alive on January 31st. That’s when EG said her friend Ashley Ancog brought her daughter Kytana to her home.

“The last time I seen Kytana was when Ashley came out of the hospital. My son picked them up. They both came to my house,” EG said.

EG said Kytana appeared to be injured.

“She was all bruised up,” said EG. “It was really bad. It was swollen. Her face was swollen … her head was swollen. She had unusual bruising on top her cheek.”

EG said Kytana stayed with other friends while Ashley was in the hospital and she advised Ashley to take Kytana to see a doctor.

According to Honolulu police, the toddler was dropped off to her father Travis Rodrigues, 40, that day.

So this beautiful baby was all bruised up and yet no one bothered to report it???

The mother should be charged as well. I’m so angry that I can’t come up with a charge but I’m sure if I calm down I’ll come up with something.

What is wrong with people?? She’s a baby.

MOO

I don’t understand why this poor child wasn’t left under her grandmother’s care? Was the reason the mother was hospitalized supposed to be a “secret”? This makes no sense.

How do you go from not even having the father on the birth certificate to dropping off your child with him out of the blue for weeks? Did Kytana even know Travis? I’m guessing no and I’m guessing the poor baby was having a hard time adjusting to an adult she didn’t knew, maybe crying a lot.
