Special K-9s Search and Recovery began searching for Moreira “Mo” Monsalve on Thursday morning, looking for any clues that may lead to her discovery and
learning what happened. The team from Texas is skilled in crime scene preservation and its two cadaver/forensic canines are trained to locate and alert handlers to the scent of blood, bones, tissue and human decomposition.

Monsalve’s case will be one of few trials in Hawaii with no body found

two new detectives recently started to help in the case which helped lead to Brown’s arrest on Friday.

KHON2 asked if Brown had any idea police were looking into him or knew the arrest was coming.

“No, and that was the whole point we wanted him to think he got away with it,” Felicilda (Mo's daughter) said. Felicilda knows it is a long road and that not having a body is hard to prove in court.....the trial could take years until it begins.

Bernard Brown will be extradited from Sacramento to the island of Maui to face charges in the murder of 46-year-old Moreira “Mo” Monsalve, who was reported missing by her daughter on January 14, 2014, authorities said.

The mother of three was last seen leaving Brown’s home in Wailuku on January 12, Maui police said. Several days later, her purse was found in a dumpster at the nearby Wailuku Community Center.

Her body was never found.

Family and neighbors had told Hawaii News Nowthat Brown was abusive and local authorities had long considered him a person of interest in the case.

He left Hawaii in early February 2014, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The case surrounding Monsalve’s disappearance was featured in Dateline NBC’s “Missing in America” series.

Her daughter, Alexis Felicilda, said she’d been waiting for Brown’s arrest for a long time.

“I’m shocked that after five years, we got this done,” she told KHNL. “Of course there’s anger, too. I’m angry that he felt he had the right to end my mother’s life.”

“This man has changed my life,” she added.

According to reporting from Hawaii News Now, Brown was an ex-boyfriend of Monsalve. The last place she was seen alive was at Brown’s Wailuku home back in January 2014. She was 46 at the time and a mother of three.

Police have considered the now 48-year-old Brown a person of interest since Monsalve’s disappearance.

The Sacramento County Jail’s booking log shows Brown was taken into custody on Friday. His bail has been set at $1,000,000 as he awaits extradition back to Maui.

Ex-boyfriend accused of killing Maui woman appears at extradition hearing

"The ex-boyfriend of 46-year-old Maui woman Moreira “Mo” Monsalve, who disappeared in 2014, faced a judge in Sacramento at his extradition hearing to face a murder charge on Maui in her presumed death.

“I’m the person who committed the felony that they’re charging?” Bernard Brown asked as he appeared before Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael Savage this afternoon, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Fox 40 KTXL reported that as Brown signed extradition papers, he asked a public defender to explain the arrest warrant for murder. The attorney said he was simply signing papers to identify himself, but that the trial would take place in Hawaii.

The judge ruled law enforcement has 30 days to extradite Brown in the murder of Monsalve. Brown is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail on a no-bail fugitive felony warrant, the newspaper said...."

Bernard Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Second Degree Murder of “Mo” Monsalve

"Bernard Brown pleaded not guilty today to second degree murder in the disappearance of Moriera “Mo” Monsalve. Brown, 48, arrived back on Maui on Wednesday and made his plea during his initial court appearance today before Maui Judge Joseph Cardoza.

For Monsalve’s daughter, it has been a long five years to finally get the man she blames for her mother’s disappearance in a court of law....

During the court proceeding, Brown’s defense attorney did not ask the judge for lower bail. Currently Brown’s bail is set at $1 million.

With the waiving of a bail hearing, the case advances to trial. A pretrial conference has been set for Nov. 13, 2019; and trial by jury has been set for on Dec. 2, 2019...."
