Brown reindicted for murder of ex-girlfriend

Brown was quickly recharged in the case after a previous indictment against him was dismissed without prejudice on Dec. 3.

At that time, Second Circuit Judge Peter Cahill set a two-month time limit, or until Feb. 3, to recharge Brown.

Moreira "Mo" Monsalve was last seen on January 12, 2014, at the house of her ex-boyfriend, Bernard Brown. Mo’s daughter, Alexis, reported her mother missing two days later, on November 14, 2014. Several days after that, Mo's belongings were found just a few miles from her Maui, Hawaii home in a dumpster behind the Wailuku Community Center. On September 20, 2019, Brown was indicted by a grand jury for the murder of Mo. He pleaded not guilty to second degree murder. Mo’s family and friends created a ‘Mowatch’ page that is dedicated to finding their lost loved one and to helping other families of missing persons in Hawaii spread awareness. Investigators with the Maui Police Department said that “despite a lengthy and detailed investigation,” Mo’s body has not been found. If you have any information on Mo’s case, please contact Detective Oran Satterfield of
the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6431.

Daughter takes the stand with new testimony in murder trial of her mother

“I had expressed concerns to Mo, and I told her that she needed to make good decisions and be careful and she felt like she was confident and able to handle herself,” said Matthew Wilkins.

Several friends also testified that Brown never showed up at any of the searches for Monsalve. Brown’s attorney Randall Hironaka said that’s because he was getting harassed by members of the public about Monsalve’s disappearance.

Trial resumes Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Judge Peter Cahill’s courtroom.

Several days after that, Mo's belongings were found just a few miles from her Maui, Hawaii home in a dumpster behind the Wailuku Community Center. On September 20, 2019, Brown was indicted by a grand jury for Mo’s murder. He pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. According to the Associated Press, in October 2021, a judge denied a defense request to move his trial away from Maui. Defense attorney Gerald Johnson cited the need “to prevent jury contamination,” given the publicity generated during the search for Mo on Maui. Judge Peter Cahill decided there was no basis to move the trial. On August 25, 2022, Brown was found guilty. His sentencing has been delayed until January 2023. Investigators with the Maui Police Department said that “despite a lengthy and detailed investigation,” Mo’s body has not been found. Just came across this case and I'll follow in case she is recovered. My heart goes out to her family. And to her - to live in fear of/ be harmed by your partner or of your ex is not something anyone should ever have to endure. And there was nothing she could have done about it.

Last updated October 28, 2024; details of disappearance updated.

Details of Disappearance

Monsalve was last seen leaving her ex-boyfriend's apartment in the Lower Main area of Wailuku, Hawaii between 10:00 and 10:30 p.m. on January 12, 2014. He said she got picked up by someone while he was asleep. She may have been seen in a black Dodge Niro, a 1994 Buick Park Avenue Ultra, or a white Ford Ranger with California license plates. She has never been heard from again.

Monsalve's ex-boyfriend, Bernard Brown, said she'd told him there were problems with her car. He reportedly dropped it off at a repair shop on January 13, and when the police picked it up on January 14, the day Monsalve was reported missing, there was nothing wrong with it.

On January 16, Monsalve's purse and some of her personal belongings were found in a dumpster at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, which was within walking distance of Brown's home. The items put in the dumpster included Monsalve's children's birth certificates, bank statements, old Mother's Day cards, and the title to her daughter's truck.

Monsalve's family and friends suspected Brown was involved, and stated she had told them her relationship with Brown was mentally abusive and that she was "terrified" of him. Monsalve had told a friend Brown had threatened to beat her, and that he was "vindictive" and she didn't trust him.

A photo of Brown is posted with this case summary. He moved to California after Monsalve's disappearance. In September 2019, he was arrested there and charged with her murder. At his trial in the summer of 2022, he maintained his innocence and his defense argued there was no physical evidence to implicate him. He was convicted of second-degree murder in August, and in January 2023 he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

It's uncharacteristic of Monsalve to leave without warning, and she's described as a devoted mother who wouldn't have abandoned her children. Her daughter and her older son were adults at the time of her disappearance, but her younger son was still in high school. Foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.
