very interesting. it looks like noah and amanda may be fairly close neighbors. wow what are the odds of that? what a fantastic stroke of luck! the same support structure used to find amanda can now be put in motion. :)

Did they both live in Haiku?

For those following the Amanda Eller search, Javier said that now that they have found Amanda his team is going to have a quick celebration then commence searching for Noah (on Sunday, I believe).

He states this towards the end of the press conference held at the hospital here

Hopefully the outcome is the same as Amanda’s.

Yes, I see that they have now stated that any professionals will now be compensated for their time.

Chris Berquist and Javier Cantellops, the arborist and Army Ranger who led the two-week search for Eller in the Makawao Forest Reserve, met with Mina’s family and were taken by helicopter Sunday to the area where he was last seen ‘so they can get a general overview of the area to develop a strategy from there,’ father Vincent Mina told The Maui News on Sunday.

‘They feel what needs to be checked off the list is the lower levels of the gulch area, and so the plan is to go into that area hiking and with drones,’ Vincent Mina said.

[SBM]

Noah ‘Kekai’ Mina was reported possibly missing on May 20 in the area of the Kapilau Ridge Trail, also known as St. Anthony Cross, in Wailuku. First responders searched the area by air and by foot but were unable to locate the 35-year-old man.

They did discover his slippers at about the 2,500-foot elevation level and found ‘some activity’ that included footprints, though they weren’t sure if they were his, Vincent Mina said. Rescue crews have scanned the sheer walls of the ridges and rappelled into plunge pools where he might have landed if he fell.

[SBM]

He added that his son had taken his phone with him, but that calls are going straight to voicemail and the phone is likely out of battery at this point.

[SBM]

This situation is extremely dangerous and different than Amanda’s search,’ Cantellops said. ‘Volunteers will not be used in the search. We will be putting together a specialized team of pros that will be going into the area.

Cantellops said weather and the dangerous terrain were major factors in the search. There are some areas of the path that are two-feet wide with an 1,800-foot drop.

[SBM]

Police Assistant Chief Victor Ramos said last week that mental health issues were a factor in the case, though Vincent Mina said in a statement shortly after that his son was ‘seeking clarity, and he has turned to nature to find that safe haven.’ He added that the family looked forward to his return and asked people to refrain from assumptions.

Thanks for the update @inmyhumbleopinion

It sounds like there was internal and external turmoil going on, mix that with treacherous surroundings and that equals disaster.

There is hope, he is young and strong with deep family love as well as a tenacious team searching for him.

I want to hold onto hope for this man.

Desperate search is launched for missing Hawaiian hiker, 35, who disappeared in the Maui forest seven days ago
His family say he went into the Kapilau Ridge Trail, also known as Saint Anthony Cross, in the Iao Valley to 'seek clarity' in nature around 8am.

But after he failed to emerge from the forest after a couple days, alarm was raised.

Searchers who helped find hiker Amanda Eller, a yoga instructor went missing in the Maui wilderness for 17 days until she was miraculously found on Sunday, are aiding in the search for Mina.

His father says that Mina hikes there regularly and is familiar with the area. He fears Mina, an experienced outdoorsman, could have gotten hurt or fallen.

'Let me be clear, yes he is seeking clarity, and he has turned to nature to find that safe haven,' his father Vincent Mina said in a statement to Maui News.

A ground and air search was launched earlier this week.

County rescuers have found Mina's slippers and possibly footprint, but the trail has since gone cold.

The police search for Mina ended on Saturday, but the family is continuing the search party on their own, paying for private infrared helicopters to scope out the jungle for a sign of him.

On Friday his family launched a fundraiser page entitled 'Bring Kekai Home', seeking to raise $100,000 to continue the search for him.

'This situation is extremely dangerous and different than Amanda’s search. Volunteers will not be used in the search. We will be putting together a specialized team of pros that will be going into the area. Unfortunately weather is a huge factor in this search as well as the extremely dangerous terrain. Areas where the path is 2'wide straight to a 1800' drop,' he added.
'It has been over the 72 hours and the research now is between our hands,' the GoFundMe page said. 'There has been new tracks found by the ridges and we are convinced that our loving Kane is out there needing the assistance to come back.'

'Helicopters going out for the search at this point we are looking at $1200/hour.We need more funds for the search in order to have the mission going,' another update in the page said.

The page describes Mina as the son of Vincent and Irene Mina, brother of Kahanulani and boyfriend of Annina Wild.

Community Support Sought in Search for Noah “Kekai” Mina
May 27
The search has focused on the West Maui Mountains (Mauna Kahalawai) along the Kapilau Ridge in the area known as the St. Anthony Cross trail in the vicinity of ʻĪao Valley. From the beginning the family has asked the public to refrain from hiking the area because of “treacherous and dangerous conditions.” In a new Facebook group, Bring Kekai Home, that was established over the weekend, organizers say community support is welcome to help fund helicopters for the ongoing air search.

On Sunday, the family reportedly met with rescuers involved with the successful return of Amanda Eller (the Maui woman was found on Friday, May 24, after being lost in the Makawao/Haʻikū forest for 17 days). That meeting also included input from Maui County Fire and Rescue and Maui police as organizers discuss their strategy moving forward.

“With the recent events surrounding the Amanda Eller missing persons case, and the miracle that she was found alive after so long alone, the Mina ʻohana has faith that Kekai will be found alive as well,” organizers wrote over the weekend in a Facebook update.

“The take away from the meeting is that this rescue is going to be accomplished by experienced people and helicopters,” according to an update posted on Sunday.

The group estimates that the cost of contracting a helicopter for the search is $1200 an hour. At last check, the fundraiser account had raised $32,124 toward a new goal of $100,000 in an effort to fund the search.

On Sunday, Javier Cantellops, a leader in the search for Eller, provided an update on the search for Mina saying a flight was conducted over ʻĪao and the immediate area where evidence was seen. “[we] got a great lay of the land and [we] were able to do some line of sight search on some of the gulches and ravines,” Cantellops wrote.

He said a specialized team of professionals will be organized. He also described the terrain as extremely dangerous noting areas where the path is two feet wide with a straight 1800-foot drop off.

He said the plan going forward involves the use of aerial resources, skilled hikers, rappellers, FAA drone pilots and infrared assets as they become available. According to Cantellops, weather will be a major factor.

According to information posted on Friday, organizers of the GoFundMe page wrote, “There has been new tracks found by the ridges and we are convinced that our loving kāne (man) is out there needing the assistance to come back.”

Kekai is described as “extremely physically fit” and “an avid adventurer.” Organizers say, “His love for nature and the ʻāina (land) will keep him grounded until he is found.”

Another hiker in Hawaii has gone missing, sparking a search that comes days after rescuers found yoga instructor Amanda Eller, who spent more than two weeks lost in the island's Makawao Forest Reserve.

Noah Mina, 35, was reported missing on May 20 in the area of Kapilau Ridge Trail, also known as the Saint Anthony Cross, in Wailuku, according to the Maui Police Department.

Police and fire personnel are assisting in his search, the department said. Javier Cantellops, one of the rescuers who found Amanda Eller on Friday, said during a news conference over the weekend that he was meeting with Mina's family to put together a search team.

"Circumstances are completely different ... but overall it's the next mission," he said at the Saturday press conference. "He's another member of our community."

Mina's father, Vincent Mina, said in a Facebook post that Noah has been missing since last Monday when he went for a hike that morning and hope's his son's story ends as Eller's did, with his safe return.

Mina is described as 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, with shaven black hair and brown eyes.

I also seek clarity and nature and understand the benefit of a walkabout. I just don’t understand why he was wearing slippers and why he would remove them.

I agree, I'm a trail runner and find such clarity and solace in nature.

If I was upset for whatever reason and left the house in a hurry and found myself in flip flops or sliders, I may go to a familiar look out or hike nonetheless. The spots I hike and run I know like the back of my hand and even though the area is moderately rugged terrain and can be dangerous, I feel safe there.

If I was in a state of despair, my safety may not be my first priority.

Helicopters flying pretty low every hour or so over my house to and from Iao Valley this morning. Sad. On many levels.

I understand what you are saying based on the situation.
Many people oftentimes go barefoot in tropical areas like that and I think he would have better traction if he removed them, IMO.

It sounds like they are relentlessly looking.

Still hoping for that positive outcome.

Gaining some traction now, not much to say in the article but riding off of AE's story.

Amanda shares more details about Noah and his situation. It seems as it may have been a suicide which was somewhat alluded to but seems likely now with a note being left.

25:15 Amanda starts talking about Noah. She knows him secondarily. She speaks about praying for Noah, something she is feeling not thinking. She says that their circumstances are different and that from her understanding Noah was in a place where he did leave a note and he wasn't really sure... he is confused, he's not really sure what he wants out of life at this point. The only thing she can do is pray for him, she can't be boots on the ground for him but she can pray for him and offer him some spiritual guidance so he can find a deeper sense of being, a deeper sense of wanting to be here and wanting to return to his amazing family

snip

he is going through his own souls journey to figure out if he wants to be here.

snip

"My heart reaches out to him Īao is a narly place, everybody knows that. It's a lot scarier in my opinion then where I was given the history."

snip

sends prayer out through the microphones. She hopes that everybody else can sit with me in their hearts and say that prayer that we can get him back home, if he chooses to be back home. It is his choice as a human being whether he wants to be here or not.

snip

she prays for Noah

There has been a big push for fundraising to support the search.

I wonder if that will slow down now that she mentioned those details?

Hopefully not. IMO he should be reunited with his family regardless of the outcome. Saw this today and don’t think it’s been posted before.
Missing Maui hiker's father says, 'We're going to bring him home,' as search continues

Honestly, I'm torn. I understand and want closure for the family, but it doesn't sound like Kekai wanted to be brought home :(

The hikers that climb huge mountain peaks and die doing so or go missing and death is suspected come to mind...I think they would want their final resting spot to be on that mountain, and I think that Kekai would want to be one with nature where he chose.

Also, Is bringing a body home worth risking one's life for?

Tough stuff.

Mental and physical illness...

Vincent Mina says that's normal, as his son had been looking to nature to cure a recent psychosis.

"He had a high fever a few months ago that led to a psychosis and his kidneys were starting to be challenged along after that high fever. With that, he was having a difficult time re-orienting himself to the reality of what he knows to be true," said Mina.

What is Psychosis?
The word psychosis is used to describe conditions that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. When someone becomes ill in this way it is called a psychotic episode. During a period of psychosis, a person’s thoughts and perceptions are disturbed and the individual may have difficulty understanding what is real and what is not. Symptoms of psychosis include delusions (false beliefs) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that others do not see or hear). Other symptoms include incoherent or nonsense speech, and behavior that is inappropriate for the situation. A person in a psychotic episode may also experience depression, anxiety, sleep problems, social withdrawal, lack of motivation, and difficulty functioning overall.

I have firmly supported AE In regards to her story and spirituality but I don’t think it was her place to provide any details that involves someone else. She was wrong in doing so. IMO Family is now saying there was no note. I agree this is a hard one because we really don’t know his mental state. He could have been having another episode of psychosis which would mean he really has no sense of reality or what he really wants or what he is doing, and in that case I would have to support his family who knows him best and want him home. My heart breaks for his family.
