Details of Disappearance​

Klimek is originally from Germany. He was staying with a host family in Wailua on the island of Kauai, Hawaii in 1999. He was last seen on either August 15 or August 16 of that year. Klimek went for a walk and never returned. He has never been heard from again.

Most of Klimek's personal possessions, including his backpack and journal, were left behind at his host family's home. His passport and wallet are missing with him, however. His case remains unsolved.

Were the host family investigated?

Apart from that, I'm thinking he had an accident during a hike and died. There are known to be steep, dangerous hiking trails in Wailua.

I'm thinking he had an accident during a hike

There are numerous cases out of Hawaii like this, and sometimes the missing person was known to be hiking. But it gives me pause that this man took his passport. Logically I think he probably just had it in the same backpack he took with him, though. (ETA: He may have had a smaller hiking pack or 2nd backpack.). What a sad case.
