Hawai‘i Island police have initiated a missing person case in connection with a 29-year-old Pāhoa woman who failed to return from a day of picking ʻopihi.

Shanice Ogata-Staudinger was picking ʻopihi (snails) with a relative in the area of Kahakai Boulevard and Papio Street in Pāhoa, at a spot commonly known as “Hau Bush”, on July 9 at 11 a.m.

Ogata-Staudinger became separated from her relative and failed to return to their prearranged meeting spot later that afternoon.

Emergency personnel, including police and Hawai‘i Fire Department’s Chopper One, responded to the scene and conducted extensive checks in the area. The United States Coast Guard is assisting in the search, and continued looking for Ogata-Staudinger throughout the night.

At first light Monday morning, July 10, Hawai‘i Fire Department units returned to the area, and Hawaii Police Department’s Area I scent-discriminating canine was also deployed to conduct a more extensive ground search.

Ogata-Staudinger is described as local with a medium build, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing a black tank top, blue jeans and purple tabis water shoes. She has a dollar sign symbol tattoo on her left cheek.

Police ask anyone who may have any information on the whereabouts of Ogata-Staudinger to contact the police department’s non-emergency line at 808-935-3311.

Ogata-Staudinger’s stepfather, Timothy Wright, said that her two young daughters ask for their mother every day. “I don’t want to lie to them,” he said, adding Ogata-Staudinger had been arrested shortly before her disappearance in July for a domestic violence incident.

Wright said she cut a man who hit her with a baseball bat.

“All we want to do is find her bring her home,” Wright said.

She had more on her plate than the arrest her family member states stems from self defense after someone hit her with a basebacll bat. She also had at active warrant on drug charges when she went missing. Only those two cases highlighted, there are multiple pages of charge listings (most traffic related) in the system, the criminal ones are so noted as are the domestic violence and restraining orders since closed. The drug charges in the mix concerns me, as that could have put her in contact with someone who might have meant her harm. I hope her family has some answers soon. eCourt* Kokua

Hawai‘i Island police are renewing their request for information regarding 29-year-old Shanice Ogata-Staudinger, of Pāhoa, who was reported missing in July 2023.

On the morning of July 9, 2023, Ogata-Staudinger was reportedly picking opihi with a relative in the area of Kahakai Boulevard and Papio Street in Pāhoa, at a spot commonly known as “Hau Bush.” Ogata-Staudinger became separated from her relative and failed to return to their prearranged meeting spot later that day. She has not been seen or heard from by her family since.

Emergency personnel conducted an extensive area search, including police with a scent discriminating canine, the Hawai‘i Fire Department’s helicopter, and the United States Coast Guard; however, Ogata-Staudinger was not located.

Police have continued to follow up on tips and have interviewed many known associates, friends, and family of Ogata-Staudinger.
