The issue is not the language they used but the poor behavior IMO!
I do agree with whomever posted that at a private school you must follow their rules.
English is not the designated language of the USA so not speaking English is not a crime.

I will learn Spanish when I move to Mexico or another Spanish speaking country out of respect to the citizens and their culture. However, as long as I live in America, I refuse to give into this crap. Let them learn my language when they are in my country.

Those countries were smart enough to designate a national language. The United States never has.
If we all really wanted to speak the language of our forefathers it would be Spanish or French or Native American.

The Spanish were the first to find the USA and I am pretty certain they were not speaking English when they colonized here.

Yes, I agree that this country IS a melting pot of many cultures, but according to the U.S. Oath of Citizenship, LEGAL IMMIGRANTS are SUPPOSED to renounce all allegiance and fidelity to their former country!

I hope they make English the sole language of the United States of America. It encourages solidarity and unity. ONE NATION UNDER GOD! Multiple languages spoken within a country encourages separatism and is very divisive, as seen in this particular case.

The Hispanic families are not being treated unfairly.
I think instead of going after the school they should teach their kids some manners and how to behave in school. Had these "hispanic" kids not bullied and dropped some bad words in Spanish about the teacher this would not be an issue.

Bad parenting once again and setting a bad example to these kids.

My husband surely didn't when he took this oath. In fact, he still has his Irish passport. The US does allow people to have duel citizenship, which is a policy that might contradict this oath. Wow - our rules and regulations contradicting each other. What a shocker!

All private schools get some form of federal and state funding. My daughter attends a private (Catholic) grammar school. They get state and federal funding for free/reduced lunches and safety programs, etc.

I don't know that all private schools do, but all parochial schools may.

I agree, banning them from speaking Spanish isn't going to stop them from bullying. They'll just do something else. They need to focus on the behavior and the parents aren't helping by acting like their children are victims here.

If you want to go to a private school, you have to abide by their rules. You are not being forced to attend their school.

You are correct. If they wish their children to be able taunt others right in front of their faces, then they should choose to send their children to a school whose standards are just as low as theirs.

Not all immigrants (immigrants are always legal, no need to add that, if they're here illegal they'd be called illegal aliens) become US citizens. And even if they do, saying the oath does *not* rob them of their right to speak a different language than English. I do agree with the thought I I'm pretty certain is behind your post, but I also think you are taking it a bit too far.

A friend of mine is from Saudi and speaks 6 languages. When people in our office speak Hindi to one another in my presence, she gets mightily offended at how rude they're being (though, she knows what they're saying and relates it back to me). I wasn't really offended (more annoyed) til she pointed it out.

I can totally see how these kids speaking spanish in an english school in front of the teachers and students could be considered out of line.

I couldn't disagree more. In the first place a Catholic school is private. My kids learned chinese in grade school (that was weird)

We are the melting pot, come here and enjoy life America has to offer. If you wish not to assimilate that is a personal choice, but I feel it is offensive to expect english speaking Americans to make sure they can speak a foreign language to make immigrants feel at home.

OK..I'll tell you about MY frustration...

I work in the attendance off at a high school. We have hispanic parents who call in and say " You speak spanish?" I say "No, but how can I help you?" (because if i can get a name I can usually decipher what is being said and everything is cool...) BUT most of the time they answer back "umphhh.....ooohhh.......ummmm.....OK.., today my son Johnny can't attend school because he's sick" in PERFECT English!!!! I think a lot of it is laziness.:furious:

We had one parent complain becuase no in the front office spoke spanish. She complained to the District Office in PERFECT English.

while i do not believe that someone should give up their heritage i do believe if you move to another country that speaks a different language you should learn that one. i know for a fact that there are a few countries that if you wish to become a citizen of their country you MUST learn their language before they will give you citizenship.

it seems to me that these parents are ignoring the reason for the school making this decision and turning it around so they become the victims...sorta the its everyone's fault but mine syndrom and why so many kids now a days don't learn to accept consequences and responsibility for their own actions.
