Matthew McCombe was last seen leaving the Novotel in Amsterdam Zuid at about 6:15 a.m. walking towards the RAI convention center, police told NL Times based on images captured by security cameras.

He was in town to celebrate his birthday with some friends. All of his belongings, including his phone and wallet, were left in his hotel room, police said. He has not been heard from since leaving.

Mum Paula, 49, shared a social media appeal from Matthew’s cousin Gerrard Williamson.

He said: “Our little cousin Matthew is missing in Amsterdam walking out of Novotel 6.15am. If anyone has seen him or has any information please contact me.

“He was last seen wearing black joggies and a pale blue stone island jumper, slim build.”

Hi, I signed up to the forum because this thread caught my interest. I am Dutch and live close to Amsterdam. If you need me to translate anything, please let me know.

I can tell you that Amsterdam South is certainly not considered shady or dangerous, nor is the part of the city where he walked towards. The route Matthew apparently took is again not on a route I would consider dangerous, it's mostly passing flats and houses. There's even a police station Amsterdam Zuid-de Pijp in that area. And if he left the hotel at 6:15, the streets would be beginning to fill with people going to work. What does worry me is that he ended up near a bridge, and the high percentage of tourist/foreigner drownings we have here... The rowing club that the police mentioned that Matthew passed is adjacent to the water, and if he kept walking north after that, I guess he might have been following the canal. The canal eventually leads to the city center, perhaps that was his goal? This is all my opinion only, of course.

I feel terrible for his family and I hope they find him alive, and soon.

Having travelled as a solo female to Amsterdam I can say that I felt safe in all areas, it is a very safe city.

It is however very easy to get lost! The houses and canals look very similar and I got lost even with Google maps at times. Saturday is a long time to be lost though :(

Really hoping he is found safe and well

Na zoekacties nog altijd geen spoor van vermiste Matthew McCombe
After searches today, still no trace of Matthew.

Article basically states the police have searched the river Amstel with underwater equipment on wednesday and thursday. The family and volunteers have been searching in an area around Watergraafsmeer. Nothing was found, sadly.
There will be another search tomorrow. I'd be interested in joining but unfortunately I'm recovering from something flu-like and I must follow the corona guidelines.

Tientallen vrijwilligers zoeken naar vermiste Matthew McCombe
Has an image of the areas that the searchers have covered, and some photos of the search. Dogs were used in the search as well.

It's so unfortunate - The Netherlands is not in a full lock-down, but as of now we are close to it. No going out in groups or loitering on the street. Searches with volunteers are likely impossible now. Everyone is advised to stay inside as much as possible. So the chances of a passerby stumbling upon poor Matthew in the water are probably very low.

I'm still wondering if he could be alive and out there somehow. The Amstel and the canals are not that wide or deep. If an accident happened I would have expected the body to have surfaced by now...unless someone somehow weighed it down. But then, I have no suggestion as to what could have caused Matthew to leave or not check in either. Could he be in a hospital somewhere, with serious injuries, and no one has made the connection because of the corona situation?

Whenever I hear of people missing in Amsterdam my first thought is always the canals...

I've been there a few times myself wobbling around the streets in my younger days and I could see how easy it was to fall in.

But it would also be quite easy to get out, or someone will hear you fall in and help you get out (unless foul play that is)
