Hot pink plates for busted drunk drivers?

i am sick of more & more laws being passed and things being rearranged because people can't stop driving drunk, beating their wives, molesting children, doing drugs, and murdering peopleamd generally behaving like pschos and morons. so now we have to get cars that are 'drunk-driving' proof, because of all the idiots out there who can't control themselves?? why are the rest of us always being 'graded on a curve'-- and it's a curve is dragging us WAY down?
i just want to know when we can go fence off a part of the world where no idiots can live- no drunk drivers, no wife-killers, no child molesters or perverts, no drug addicts, no criminals and murderers. (and, no crazy, backwards fundamentalists.) why is that so much to ask?

:waitasec: So, if your spouse is convicted of DUI do they put the pink license plates on all cars they have access to or only the cars registered in their name? My dh and I have two cars neither which are in my name at all. If he were to get a DUI would our children and I have to suffer embarrassment along with him?
You have a point here and I admit, I hadn't thought about it until you said it. IMO, one DUI is one too many and three is totally unacceptable.

If people know they aren't going to get a "pink" plate until the third one, heck, they might as well get the first and second ones with no repercussion.

Well, if you had to have 2 or more DUI's get the plate that would not be an issue, if hubby had that bad a problem and would not get help after the 2nd one he would be gone. I would not put up with someone with a drinking problem who refused to get help.

My uncle was convicted of DUI sometime ago and for months after he had to breathe into some device before he could start his car. To make sure he hadn't had anything to drink. I thought it was a great idea. Added bonus? He hasn't had a drink in 3 years now. I know he had some trouble with the thing when he took cold medicines like dayquil liquid or something, but other than that I thought it was great. Heck, one guy in the town I grew up in lost his license and decided to just drive his lawn mower everywhere. Still drunk, but not in an "automobile". QUOTE]

There are three problems diagnosed by mechanics who have worked on cars w/ these devices:
1) Drunks can (and do) blow up a balloon before drinking. The balloon fits over the mechanism and allows the car to start--the balloon air is clean.
2) Friends/relatives/teens looking for $20 can and do blow into the device for previously mentioned drunk.
3) If the car does not start moving w/i 10 minutes, it shuts off--meaning every 10 minutes, the mechanic working on the car has to go blow into it or the engine quits. This is EXTREMELY ANNOYING! It cannot be disconnected for maitenance purposes.

I'm not sure what state you are in, but the Mister's son had one of these on his car.
1) The balloon thing wouldn't work, because it's not just air flow, but a vibration sound that you have to make in order for the thing to register.
2) Even if you could get someone to do that, the beeper can go off at any time that you are driving, so it wouldn't help a drunk driver to just start the car.
3) He routinely warmed up his car for 10 minutes or more. It's just that it will often beep shortly after starting, like I was saying above. The only time his car needed repair, the mechanic was fine with the situation.

It's certainly not foolproof, but the idea is to use good judgement as to whom is allowed to have it.

Predators on the other hand, hmmmm....could they just put a sign on their foreheads instead? Like a tattoo? I know a guy who was accused of sexual assualt on his neighbors kid and did a little jail time and then was living with 5 kids within 6 months of getting out of jail. And if they put it on the predators car, what is to stop him from using someone else's car? Just a thought.

You can get busted for that in Michigan- the law is motorized vehicles. But, get this, if they catch you drinking and canoeing... they can take your driver's license away. :waitasec: That has never sat well with me.
