POTRERO, Calif. - With its isolation and rustic ambience, this sparsely populated hamlet in eastern San Diego County offers the privacy and quiet its residents crave.”It’s perfect: nobody here but us rural souls,” Will Lee said as he headed to the Potrero General Store.
But Lee’s solitude and sense of being far from the crowd may soon be ruffled.

I'm now trying to keep track of the fires here.! The wind really comes up in the afternoon where these fires East of us are.

"Shortly after 2 p.m., authorities sent out a statewide request for 10 teams, which means a total of 220 firefighters, 10 so-called hand crews that use picks and shovels to bolster fire lines and include 12 to 15 members each, six bulldozers, six helicopters and 10 air tankers"

One person is dead and four firefighters have been burned by one of two wildfires that are being spread by high winds in the San Diego County, fire officials said.
The firefighters were injured when their fire engine was overtaken by the Harris Fire, Sunday afternoon. That fire had blackened about 2,500 acres by 2:45 p.m., according to Roxanne Provaznik of CalFire. The injured firefighters were taken by air ambulance to a burn center for treatment.

Isn't this awful!

Local firefighters head south to help fight fires
By Scott Marshall STAFF WRITER

A team of 22 Contra Costa-area firefighters was mobilized this afternoon to be sent to help fight wildfires in Southern California, possibly to a fire growing larger near San Diego.
Heavy, off-road fire vehicles from stations in Walnut Creek, El Cerrito, San Ramon and the East Bay Regional Parks Fire Department were ordered to gather at the San Ramon Valley Fire District's station 31 on San Ramon Valley Boulevard for the trip south, said Contra Costa fire Battalion Chief Dave George.
The firefighters are being sent to Prado Regional Park in San Bernardino County and could be deployed to Malibu or another fire in the San Diego area, George said.
They could be gone as long as two weeks.
Driven by powerful Santa Ana wind, fire threatened a university and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the Malibu Hills today, authorities said. Flames destroyed a church and several homes, one of them a landmark castle.
About 500 firefighters worked to protect Pepperdine University and some 200 homes in the upscale Malibu Crest and Serra Retreat neighborhoods, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sam Padilla.
The blaze that started in Malibu Canyon had charred at least 1,000 acres. But the San Diego fire became more threatening this afternoon.

Thank Heavens for the firefighters; I hope not too many of them get hurt.

Apparently there is now a fire burning here in Orange County. It's inland, close to the 241 toll road. In the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains.

Sheesh! Anaheim Hills just got it last year....or was that earlier this summer? You're right, that whole area is so parched.

IT was just a few months ago wasn' it? Well we know there is nothing left to burn there I guess.
They are saying City of Orange out by the 241..it could be anywhere along that stretch. Probably a lot of people coming home from weekend trips via the 241 on this hot hot Sunday night as well.

Wildfire burning in O.C.

Mandatory evacuation in the area of Portola Road and the 241 toll road.

Orange County firefighters are battling a brush fire in the vicinity of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads that broke out about 6 p.m. today, according to Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Capt. Stephen Miller.
Mandatory evacuation has been ordered in the area of Portola Road and the 241 toll road.
Officials say the fire permieter is the 261 toll road to the west, Portola Parkway to the south and the 241 toll road on the east side.
Officials say they will bring bulldozers in around Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park through an access road to protect residential areas of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills.
The 133 toll road is closed as is Portola Road.
The fire has reached Limestone Canyon Regional Park and fire officials report that it is very intense because of the high fuel level in the park.
The fire is burning near Fremont Canyon, where 85 mph winds -- equal to a Category I hurricane -- have blown in the last half hour, says the National Weather Service. "The winds are gusting to 60 mph in nearby canyons," says Ted Mackechnie, a weather service forecaster. "This will last through the night

I wonder if this is the new area in Irvine? By the old El Toro base?

The winds here have really started to pick up. I'm coastal OC and I can't believe how windy it is. It's blown the smell of smoke away for the time being, but I'm on a hilltop area with the ocean to one side and a brown, dry canyon to the other. I hope this doesn't turn out to be like the fires we had in October of 2003 (or was it 2004??).

I'm hoping they have determined the cause of all the fires. Despite the high Santa Ana winds, it seems strange to have this many fires.

2003. Those were something else. I am on the coastal side of SJC by DP and SC. It is very windy here as well.

It really is weird. But boy the conditions are pretty extreme. one of those places was reporting hurricane speed winds.
Even when the SA winds are up , we rarely get windy. It just gets hot and dry here. but it sure was windy today.

We're pretty close to each other. It's whipping up out there. I just talked to my friends in Irvine. They could see the flames earlier by Northwood.
