Thanks for posting this. I've been quietly following along, praying for all those affected by this storm. My daughter, son in law and two grandchildren are in Charlotte NC. They are doing well as they are quite far inland but it appears the power is out there now. Please stay safe everyone!

We have been in contact all morning with our daughter in Charleston.

She has begun to send us videos ever so often showing the water level rising around their home.

Their home is built up on a very small man made berm. She says she does expect they may have water in part of the first floor. Their ceilings are 15 foot ceilings so they don't expect it will get into the second story level. They had already moved all furniture upstairs.

She just texted that the power is flickering now. The wind is not too bad at the moment. If they lose power the auxiliary generator will kick in.

Said our 2 granddaughters are playing board games with each other.

I feel like I am back in 2nd grade math struggling with a story problem.

At 11 AM Hurricane Dorian was 50 miles ESE of Charleston, SC. She bullied everyone in her path at 8 miles per hour. One hour later at 12 PM she’s... 45 miles ESE of the same town?

This is why hurricane fatigue sets in. The math never aligns with the hope for when it will be over.

I am trying to remain positive since our daughter's home was built 2 years ago.

I know the building codes require newer homes to be built stronger... since sadly Charleston has had many hurricanes it seems through the years including flood water problems.

Checking in from Wilmington. Jim Cantore was spotted coming in last evening in the Wilmington Airport. Spent this morning in my closet due to numerous tornadoes in the area. Tornadoes, too many to count and still going on in the area. Rain bands starting to come in now too.

Oh no! Tornadoes can be just as dangerous, and terrifying.

We have had many in our area too in the past.

Dorian is unusual in every facet so the increase in the volume and strength of the tornadoes is almost expected.

The National Weather Service has received reports of five possible tornadoes in the Onslow County and western Carteret County areas.

With several reports already made and the potential for tornado activity continuing as Hurricane Dorian passes through Eastern North Carolina, the National Weather Service encourages residents to have more than one way to receive weather alerts.

“With multiple storm threats out there, make sure you have multiple ways to get warnings,” said meteorologist Erik Heden with the National Weather Service Office in Newport.

As storms moved through this morning with early bands of Hurricane Dorian, reports came in from weather spotters and the public regarding tornadoes in several areas.

The NWS defines a tornado as “a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with the ground,” according to their website. Wind speeds in can range from 65 mph to 318 mph, the latter being the highest tornado wind speed ever recorded.

If a tornado watch is listed for your area, the NWS says that means conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in and around the area. It’s usually issued for a large coverage area and is intended to give people enough time to review their safety plan.

When a tornado warning is issued, the NWS says a developing tornado has been detected or has been reported on the ground by a reliable source. These warnings typically last no longer than 45 minutes, but if one is issued you should seek shelter immediately.

“If you see a tornado or feel threatened, move to a safe place immediately, as precious seconds can save your life,” the NWS advises.

Hurricane Dorian is one long lasting hurricane and also unpredictable. It seems to go back and forth from a category 2 to category 3 and then back to category 2.

A Florida man was concerned his beloved smart car would get blown away in Hurricane Dorian this week, so he moved it to a very safe place. The inside of his house.

Jacksonville native Patrick Eldridge told CBS News he put his smart car inside his house on Tuesday morning, adding that his "wife was impressed that I was right about it being able to fit into the kitchen."

His wife, Jessica, posted hilarious images of the small car inside the Florida home to Facebook on Tuesday morning. "My husband was afraid his car might blow away," she wrote. "And my car is in the garage."

The photos quickly went viral, garnering over 65,000 shares and 22,000 reactions. "We are still in shock that this madness wave has occurred on the internet since the posting first emerged," Eldridge said.

I expected tornadoes during a hurricane but have never seen this number. I've been through many of them. This is crazy.
