You can "smell the smell of death" on the island of Grand Bahama

CNN's Patrick Oppmann is in Bevans Town on the Island of Grand Bahama, one of the areas most devastated by Hurricane Dorian.

He said the area is in ruins.

"Every house, every structure, every life has been essentially destroyed in this area," he said.

The official death toll stands at 30 in the Bahamas — but officials have warned that will rise as recovery efforts continue. Oppman said residents in Bevans Town told him they recovered five bodies yesterday.

"When we were driving up, we could smell the smell of death," he said.

NC Governor: Hundreds stranded on Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper says hundreds are stranded on Ocracoke Island as Hurricane Dorian moves up the U.S. East Coast.

Cooper told reporters Friday morning that rescue teams are ready as soon as they can move in. He says local authorities are telling people to get to the highest point in their home.

Weakened Dorian strands people on North Carolina island

Sheriff’s officials sent medics and other rescuers to Ocrakoke Island — reachable only by boat or air — amid reports of people being forced to retreat to their attics after defying mandatory evacuation orders along the 200-mile (320-kilometer) ribbon of low-lying islands.

“There is significant concern about hundreds of people trapped on Ocracoke Island,” Gov. Roy Cooper said. “There are rescue teams ready as soon as they can get in.”

Tennessee teams deploy for Hurricane Dorian’s mid-Atlantic coast impact

NASHVILLE, T.N. (WIS) - The State of Tennessee sent critical emergency management and medical assistance to the Carolinas Thursday and again Friday to assist with Hurricane Dorian’s coastal impact.

A 30-member nurse strike team from the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) left Thursday for Raleigh, North Carolina, to provide medical care to Hurricane Dorian survivors. The team included 25 nurses and five emergency response coordinators (ERC) from TDH locations across the state. ERCs will provide logistical and communication support to allow the nurses to focus on nursing.

Medical supplies, food from New Orleans heading to Bahamas today

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans developer and serial entrepreneur Sidney Torres has spent the past week, gathering food and medical supplies to send to the Bahamas.

[...]

According to Torres, this Saturday and moving forward, DC 3 cargo planes will be flying into airports throughout the devastated areas dropping off 20,000 pre-packaged meals that will feed a family of 4 for 4 days.

Earlier this week, there was a call for desperately needed medical supplies. New Orleans based LCMC Health and Ocshner Health Systems are both expected to make sizable donations. Torres said he hopes to fly those supplies down to the Bahamas as well.

Volunteers have been working throughout the week at Torres's warehouse in Mid City, boxing up food for the first shipment.

Hundreds of people could still be on North Carolina's Outer Banks as Hurricane Dorian smacks into and floods the barrier islands Friday morning, a state official said.

The Category 1 storm made landfall over Cape Hatteras at 8:35 a.m. ET with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph, causing flooding in parts of Hatteras and nearby Ocracoke.
Pictures from state transportation department cameras show roads flooding in and near Hatteras village. Responders will rescue people, if necessary, when conditions improve, state emergency management director Mike Sprayberry said Friday morning.

My heart remains with everyone who may be in Dorian's path.

I know those that thought they would be in the possible strike zones with this agonizingly long hurricane have to be mentally exhausted.

But it also causes so much stress for their loved ones that don't live in these areas, but have cherished love ones living there.

At first, I prayed for our eldest daughter, and our eldest granddaughter/family when it was to strike Florida. Then felt such relief only to then worry about our dear friends who live on the coast of Georgia. That too passed.

But then we had to begin worrying about the safety of our youngest daughter/family in Charleston, and being so relieved that everyone in the area there remained safe.

I was telling my hubby this morning if our youngest child, and only son had still been stationed at USMC New River Air Station in Onslow Co., Jacksonville, NC our dread, and worried would have continued.

At least we didn't have this stress this time.. although we have had to worry before when he was there for many years when he had to flee from hurricanes in that area.

In 1900 in Galveston, TX. they suffered tremendously from a killer monster hurricane with between 8K to 12K people losing their lives.

But, I'm so afraid that the death toll for the Bahamian people will rise even higher than it did in Galveston with many of the bodies washed out to sea. :(

My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with them all. Many thousands of lives will be lost, and I pray for the families left behind who's lives have been changed forever. God be with them all.

In SE Virginia. Still have power and that is something given that the main sub station that covers a large part of this town is notorious for going out during thunderstorms. Sustained winds really haven't hit 30 mph and the rain is light but steady. No trees or large limbs down from what I can see from the house, but I haven't gone out either. We've seen northeasters do more damage. No tornadoes that I know of. This time we got VERY lucky.

Mortuary workers carried out the grim task of searching for bodies in heaps of rubble on Friday as dazed survivors of Hurricane Dorian waited for relief from the Category 5 storm that ravaged the northern Bahamas.

At least 30 deaths have been reported from the monster storm but hundreds — perhaps thousands — of people are missing and Bahamian officials said the final toll could be “staggering.”

“Abaco Island is like a ghost town,” said Mark Duvinie, a resident of Marsh Harbour, the largest town on Abaco, which had been home to more than 15,000 people. “No electricity, no water, no nothing.”

“I honestly believe Abaco is finished,” said Thaah Hepburn, another resident of Marsh Harbour. “Absolutely everything is gone.”

“I don’t think people are going to invest anymore because of the devastation,” Hepburn said. “It’s a chance I don’t think people are willing to take.”

According to UN relief officials, more than 70,000 people — virtually the entire population of Grand Bahama and Abaco — are in need of assistance after the storm reduced homes to matchsticks and destroyed their livelihoods.

Stay safe! I posted an update regarding PEI here:

Prince Edward Island is bracing for wind gusts as high as 120 km/h and over 100 millimetres of rain. The centre of the storm is forecast to pass off the eastern end of P.E.I. by early Sunday morning.

Thank you! I'm hoping that we'll be able to get fully stocked up with at least 3 days worth of emergency supplies. My anxiety is through the roof. The news of the devastation so far is absolutely horrible.
