Hurricane Dorian - August/September 2019 #2

Hey! Power came back on at 4:15 this morning, but unfortunately my landline and internet did not. My carrier is based in Nova Scotia, so that may be why. I'm currently on my way to Charlottetown since the weather is much better. I am used to being isolated living out in the country, but not having tv, phone, or internet is a weird feeling. I just feel like I need to get out today and see the outside world. I'm noticing lots of downed trees and minor property damage on the way into town, but it looks as if things are getting back to normal.
Hey! Good to hear from you and glad you got power back, at least. Hopefully things will return to normal quickly for you!

Hurricane Fran is the worst one I've been through in this area. The photos of the Bahamas are worse but remind me of how the beaches and area looked following Fran. The anniversary of Fran is the exact anniversary of when Dorian brushed our coast on the 5th.

Civil War cannonballs found on beach after Hurricane Dorian

Beachgoers found two Civil-War-era cannonballs on the edge of Folly Beach, uncovered by Hurricane Dorian and laying in the sand.

But this isn’t the first time Civil War cannonballs have been found on Folly Beach. Following hurricane Matthew in 2016, 16 civil war cannonballs were found in the same location.

The Baptiste family steps off the ferry that brought them from Marsh Harbour, the port in the Bahamas that was flattened by hurricane Dorian.

"Plenty people dead," says Marie Claude Baptiste, the 46-year-old mother, in broken English. She does not say where she is from, though the area she has fled was home to many Haitian immigrants.

"Plenty people. Maybe 400 people," she says, with tears in her eyes and a cell phone clutched in her hand, the only possession she has left after the hurricane.

But for now, all she wants is to get her family on board a bus that will take them to a shelter.

Her husband Fedner Baptiste, 44, steps in: "I don't have nothing. Car, house, dog. Gone. This is it. A backpack. That's it."
After horror of Dorian, Bahamas struggling to shelter survivors

This seven-person team from Martin County in Florida loaded a cardiac patient from a borrowed and beaten up Chevy onto Acute Air Ambulance’s Leer jet en route to Fort Lauderdale.

Dr. Michael Ferraro, an emergency room doctor from Cleveland Clinic Florida, was on the fourth plane to land here after the storm.

“The local hospital, especially in the Marsh Harbour area, can’t handle any patients right now acutely so we’re just evacuating them all out. Pregnant women, who are four months pregnant and bleeding, not a lot I can do for them here,” Ferraro said. “We’re getting them out.”

We smelled more than what we saw. We ran into a certain rescue team that was going through a building in shelters and marking. They were seeing a lot of bad stuff,” she added. The team is hoping to continue its mission.

Every flight is made possible by private funding and donations to cover the cost of fuel.
Hurricane Dorian: Medical teams race to save lives in the Bahamas

On September 7th, a UPS humanitarian charter flight arrived at the international airport in Nassau, The Bahamas, delivering nearly 20 metric tons of emergency supplies for children and families left reeling by Hurricane Dorian. The shipment included shelter, hygiene and water purification emergency supplies provided by UNICEF and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

With a focus on both immediate and long-term relief, The UPS Foundation is working in collaboration with its network of disaster relief organizations to address the urgent needs created by the storm, including:

So glad you are safe!!!

Its good to get out after the storm, walking relieves stress, and sunshine improves our mood.

Happy day !!!

But the Balearia ferry crew was under the impression that passengers could enter the U.S. with just a passport and a copy of their police record, the documents required by the visa waiver program between the U.S. and the Bahamas, WSVN reports.

Under the program, Bahamian citizens can fly to the U.S. without a visa if they are pre-cleared in Nassau or Freeport, have a valid Bahamian passport, and have no criminal record.
The Reason Hundreds of Hurricane Dorian Survivors Were Turned Away From the U.S.

The interview I saw was a dad, who only had a police report, no passport or visa.

People Waited hours to purchase tickets to travel to the USA and was told later to leave the boat! Ship officials announced for every one using a police record with no visa to travel to leave immediately! Majority of Bahamians especially Children exited the ship! #Balearia MVP on Twitter

Boy surprised with free Disney trip after donating savings to feed Hurricane Dorian evacuees

On Sunday, Jermaine celebrated his seventh birthday and was surprised by Mickey Mouse and a group of Walt Disney World cast members who showed up to share that the boy was going to Disney World after all.

The family will enjoy a VIP getaway at the resort later this month

U.S. Customs did not order anyone off the boat. If they had passport and clean police record, they would have vetted in Miami. The PRIVATE boat company, who charged for the trip removed them. It was a business decision.

Everything I've read, all evacuations were free.

Something ain't right with this boat company. Imo

I can't even believe this. How are these people supposed to have their passports?
Couldn't the ship take those without paperwork to another island, drop them off, then continue to the usa?

Carolina Waterfowl had a team along the coast waiting for Dorian to hit, Executive Director Jennifer Gordon told McClatchy news group Monday.

Partnering with local rescues, veterinarians and wildlife rehabilitators, Gordon said Carolina Waterfowl saved 109 squirrels — but that doesn’t include those who died or were euthanized because of injuries.

“Which was a lot,” she said.

The ones that survived were triaged and moved to local rehabilitation centers to make room for squirrels still arriving from the coast, Gordon said.

Rescuers have also saved hordes of bird species like songbirds and pelicans, she said, many of which were forced to follow the hurricane’s path.

Hundreds of thousands of birds were picked up in the eye of the storm using Doppler radar, according to the rescue group.

Carolina Waterfowl is asking for donations and volunteers to help with the intake of injured animals.

Yes, they can go to Nassau to obtain documentation needed. There is a US Embassy on Nassau.

These folks will need IDs and documents to work, receive benefits or financially recovery assistance, in the US or any other country. I feel sure the US is processing everyone they can and providing help to obtain documentation.

Working in health care, trying to obtain birth certificates, ID, etc from foreign countries for folks, legally or illegally in this country is almost impossible. A delay for these folks, but a must have. Its much easier and more successful to obtain in person and work thru any problems on Nassau.

Apparently GB and the Island have illegal immigrants. Not sure how they arrived, but apparently its pretty easy access for illegal entry.

You really would think they could be evacuating to other islands. It would have to be faster and easier.

They could have gone to Nassau. All evacuations to Nassau are free.

The ship the folks were removed from was a commercial ship out of the Bahamas and was charging for the passage to Miami. These folks were paying!!!
They removed the folks, as a business decision.

The whole thing sounded hinky, to me.

We all know, life can not continue without identification.

Just like if I lost my IDs, credit cards, etc in the US. I would need to go obtain.

Yes, it's a big hassle, but these folks need these documents to move forward in life. No matter what county.

This is the airport hangar in Nassau where evacuees are arriving from Abaco or Freeport and getting processed! They can then go to shelters on island. We @WCKitchen have been serving meals here and all of the shelters as numbers go up every day! #ChefsForBahamas José Andrés on Twitter

I've had MREs. They have a heat pack you break and it heats the meal. It taste like low grade TV dinner. Hot home cooked meals are much better, if possible.

José Andrés on Twitter

Thanks for the MRE’s.And for showing up and supporting. But Fresh meals are ready available. We can do as many as needed. The problem is not enough helicopters or seaplanes or boats to deliver them north Gran Abacos. And West Gran Bahama. No jet fuel available makes it difficult! Trey & Matt on Twitter
