Hurricane Ian, Sept 2022

My parents, my sister and my niece live only a few miles off the SC coast.
My sister’s house backs up to a huge pond. I’m concerned for flooding of her first floor.

I know that’s practically nothing compared to what Florida just experienced. However it is still concerning, for me at least.
I just moved from the Charleston area at the beginning of this month and I'm not in SC anymore. Hurricanes are scary, the wind, the rain and flooding. Has your sister been flooded out before? I lived there during Matthew, Dorian, Irma and was never flooded, but there wasn't a pond in my back yard, either.

Ian has a mind of his own so who knows what's going to happen until he gets to SC. Hopefully, not much. Dorian was the worst as it came in as a category 2, but seriously, not much wind or rain at that point. Matthew was a lot worse but only a category 1 or less. A lot of rain and wind.

I hope your family stays safe.

From what I have heard from CNN, search and rescue is in full force on Sanibel, Captiva and Pine Island. IMO, we probably won't see any video flyovers until all of the potential missing are accounted for.

Prayers up

I am quite attached to the Naples area, so I've been searching for video of the Gulf Shore Blvd , and old Naples. Saw the pier. Sad but it can be repaired. I've never seen that part of Fla hit so hard. Here is a link to a short vid of Sanibel and Ft. Myers Beach.

The pizza shop is doing takeout. Everything in the fridge is a loss. I’m sure my little chest freezer food is a loss too. Usually FEMA puts an application online so you can recover your food losses. But of course we have no power.

One of my best friends just showed up at my house this morning and started picking up branches. We got most of the big branches in piles. The little pine boughs we loaded in an old trash bin. The entire 1/4 acre will need to be raked there is so much small debris.

As I was driving over here to the pizza shop, there were downed trees everywhere. The county workers started clearing roads in the wee hours.

Time to have a hot slice of pizza!
glad you are OK; have seen 1 hurricaine and and would like to not see another :(
maybe get some canned coffee for the next huricaine or try some cold brew

horrible seeing all the mess and destruction; the things people make- they are
all flimsy in serious weather.

Parts of the Sanibel Bridge are gone and probable structure damage. I can't imagine how long it will take to repair. No word yet regarding damage on the island. I keep hoping someone will make a flyover. No word on Captiva...

I have bad news for the Naples Pier fans. It is gone. Even the pilings were torn out. The storm sent waves 20 feet over the pier.

@PayrollNerd I'm happy you made it through safely!

Take care
kind of amazing in the sanibal bridge pictures that most of the bridge is actually still there - a chnk missing. when we had the one hurricaine I ever saw the results of up close and personal, the roads just had mountains of sand on them - took months to clear them.

My sister in SC has never experienced flooding before. This is her first home.
I’m mostly concerned because of all of the bodies of water that surrounds her house. Her neighborhood has many ponds within the community. But this one specific one is the largest and is less than 50’ from her back yard. There are two additional ponds that could affect her home. One is about 200’ away but this one has another house that backs up to it. So there’s no direct access but somewhat. And the third one is to her left which is a bit shy of 150’.

I’m sure that she & my niece will be staying at my parents for the hurricane as their house isn’t directly impacted by any ponds.

Though parts of the Sanibel bridge are still standing, there is no guarantee any part of it is still structurally sound. IMO it will be a very long road to functionally rebuilding the bridge.

An update on Sanibel Island from Mayor Holly D. Smith said search and rescue efforts were of paramount importance.

"Boats are in the water and now heading to or are on island for search and rescue. All individuals on the island need to be taken off," she said.

"The coming days ahead will be difficult. Our first priority is to get those who are stranded to safety. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF LOVED ONES WHO MAY HAVE REMAINED ON THE ISLAND.

We have requested barge service for the short-term, to get assets on the island for the recovery, possibly for the long-term for island access due to the condition of the causeway.

She said search and rescue will be a methodical and long process. After the rescue efforts, police go island-wide for safety and clearance, then the structural safety inspections teams conduct an island-wide inspection of every property on island for structural integrity or damages. Once these actions are completed, the city will transition to re-entry if possible.

Earlier this year, hubby and I bought a mobile home in a 55 year old plus community below Tampa for cash with pretty much our entire savings. She's adorable, located in a fantastic neighborhood and 5 star park.
1.5 miles from the Gulf. A long time, planned dream. Hubby is 74, I am 68.
There's more to this story, but I'm tuckered out watching this horrific storm.
Right now She's still there, as the storm changed direction to the south.
But, the impacts haven't hit us yet. It's not over. This storm covers nearly the entire State of Florida.
Our neighbors were given the keys to our home before I left in May.
Thank Goodness. They've turned off our circuit breakers and stored our patio furniture and trash bins.
We're in California, watching and hoping our life savings and retirement home is not flooded or swept away.

Hoping your retirement home withstood the fierceness of this horrific storm!

We have a condo in Fort Myers and right now we are trying to determine how much damage there is- I am told all the buildings (there are 7), sustained damage, but at this point I don't know the extent of the damage. We winter there for the past 15 years, but probably won't go down there this winter. Plus, my husband left his little Spyder vehicle down there, which I am sure is totaled by the storm, as it was just out in the parking lot.

The devastation in Fort Myers is beyond belief. Fort Myers Beach, such a great place, has been completely leveled, and is gone.

Hi, neighbor. I couldn't remember where your condo was, and I'm sorry to hear that it might have sustained damage during the storm. Sad that you might not be able to escape Michigan winter this season. Please keep us posted on your condo in Fort Myers.

We visited Sanibel Island years ago and stayed at the Sundial Resort. Really enjoyed the island, hate to think about the devastation caused by Ian.

We stayed at the Sundial too and drove to Captiva one day and had lunch at The Bubble Room. Such a beautiful area. In the following years, we adopted a dog and rented condos along Fort Myers Beach, the best pet-friendly beach ever.

My in-laws live in nearby Naples so this area is like a second home to us.

As a Sandy victim, my heart goes out to those facing this uphill battle after losing their home. We fixed ours from flood damage with what little we received from flood insurance then got tangled in the grant mess of lifting the home. It’ll be 10 years next month for us, and after multiple contractor fraud charges and a non-profit who bailed on us during COVID, we are anticipating moving back home before Christmas this year.

In the scope of loss, I know it seems small, at this juncture, but the pier is an historic site, and a meeting place of sorts where you could enjoy talking with folks, fishing, or just watching a sunset. It is not gone. It will be restored.
Naples Pier not gone, but has significant damage

At Fort Myers Beach, I can't even find the street, that I was looking for. No landmarks. :( The pier my friend enjoyed fishing from, at Fort Myers, is, pretty much gone.

Regarding the Naples Pier, there was another structure and more boardwalk past those 2 existing structures. I believe what you see now was the middle of the pier.

Every day we spent in Naples we walked that pier. At first we did it as an excuse to get away from the in-laws for a few hours then whenever we were in town we made sure to stop and walk the boardwalk. Before Ian, my husband would have the webcam open on his computer every night to watch the sunset.

I was watching one guy, from the second story of condo, or motel, give his report. He was noting the rooftops on the buildings around him. They were newer buildings and had a type of roof that when the wind became stronger, the roof tightened down, preventing the wind from getting under the shingles. However, he was on a 2nd floor balcony and they were thinking of moving to a third floor, as the water was getting pretty close to them. Water is a whole different animal. Then there's no a/c, all that standing water, flooded buildings, a mold spores playground.

More from Sanibel:

On Thursday evening, Sanibel officials said that 200 households reported staying on the island during the storm. Two people were confirmed dead, 14 medically evacuated and another 40 rescued without injury on Thursday.

We are on pins and needles waiting to find out the extent of damage to our condo- We are hoping the damage will not mean that our Condo would be a total loss: we are on the second floor of a two story building. We are concerned that the roof might have actually blown off or would be so damaged that our unit would be severely damaged. It is difficult to get information at this point. It is sad we won't be able to winter at our lovely condo in Florida this winter. To think of the level of destruction in Fort Myers just makes me very sad for so many people who have lost so much.

Then you know that draw to it. My family are sunset watchers too. I got this from EarthCam before the cam went down. My parents tune in to the sunset, and I do, if I remember in time. Naples has a special place in heart.

I took neither of these. They were in a Public Group that I follow. Taken one week apart.

So many iconic structures are gone- it is just really sad and frankly, kind of unbelievable

It's good you were up north instead of trapped in there. Did your parking lot flood where the Spyder was?
