Hurricane Ike and Topical Storm Hanna

  • #241
In the case of Ike, though, there is little reason to focus too much on the exact category and exact location where the eye will come ashore. That's because Ike is a massive storm in which hurricane force winds extend 120 miles out from the center and tropical storm force winds out to 275 miles. Conditions are already deteriorating along the Texas and Louisiana coast, well in advance of the eye's expected landfall, and New Orleans is being hammered by the storm's northern fringe.

The forecast further inland for the Houston metro area -- sustained winds of 60-80 mph and gusts to around 100 mph with rainfall totals of 5-10", according to the National Weather Service -- is not much better than for Galveston, albeit without the storm surge. Yet, Houston officials have told residents there to stay put in hopes of avoiding the disastrous evacuation experience that occurred in advance of Hurricane Rita in 2005. By this time tomorrow we may know whether or not this was the right decision.

I have never in my life seen a hurricane as LARGE as Ike is! It takes up the entire Gulf of Mexico!

Prayers for everyone in it's path, in Jesus' Name, AMEN!

Yes, but the amazing thing is the core isn't that organized and intense. It hasn't developed into a Cat 4 or 5 in wind intensity, but because of its size, it's bringing a massive storm surge usually seen only with Cat 4 or 5 storms. You don't see those tightly organized bands around the eye which is really good in terms of wind damage. The wind strength is being spread out over a massive area, hence, the massive storm surge.

It is just jaw-dropping to see the water at the level it is now, without even getting outer bands of rain. Last I checked they were air evacuating about 150 people from Bolivar Peninsula.

Ike is going to be re-writing the books on hurricanes and insurance policies as well. Every prediction and forecast was off.

all in the storm's path...hunker down & keep safe.... remember to bring in pets & provide for them!!!!

weather has far-reaching affects.... in alabama & florida the storm surge is flooding coastal areas & there has been no rain so far.....in georgia we have had a run on gas... many stations have been out since friday afternoon & the pipeline terminal is CLOSED because there is no gas. the stations with gas have bumped the price up about a dollar a gallon.

We haven't had any rain here, just clouds and wind. It's a bit surreal to watch the clouds move so quickly, and a bit depressing since I know they are a part of something bigger, something much more dangerous.
To everyone in it's path:please let us know you are okay when you can. I know first hand that once Ike makes landfall WS will be one of the last things you will have to worry about. Just know we are here for you and we are praying for all of you.

Every one please stay safe. Question which will show you how much I know about Texas. How close is Austin to where the storm is supposed to hit?
