They interviewed one man who only has a motorcycle and 3 dogs. He wouldn't leave his pets but had no way to evacuate them. He claims he has an axe to chip a hole in the roof when the floodwaters start to rise. The problem is that there will be nobody around to save him from the roof if he makes it up there and doesn't get blown off.

News also reported that not all the disabled were evacuated from Galveston. A married couple restricted to wheelchairs were never picked up by the promised buses and said both the 911 and 311 systems are down.

And those are just the first of many heartbreaking stories. :(

BF going to the pool to fill up ice chests. I've never had to use the bathroom without water. I just pray, pray we don't lose power.

Oh no. I hope someone can get to them. If they die that will be a tragedy. Poor folks. Well, at least they will be together.

Check out the video link with this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26676728/

They're now saying waves could top 70 feet but will break out in the bay and come in as storm surge. Incredible.

Most people in Houston will be safe unless they are in mobile homes or similar structures. Oh, and high-rises, next to the windows or standing in the streets underneath them. The winds are at low Cat. 2 right now and Houston is about an hour in from Galveston, so if the storm moves through quickly as predicted there will be only the usual street and underpass flooding. I think they learned a lot of good lessons from Tropical Storm Allison flooding (which trained for several days) and the hospitals are much more prepared this time.

I have some students in trailer homes but they said they were going to relatives' homes. If they do that they will be fine.

Kato, DH said that during Alicia in his apt. complex they didn't get water back for a couple of weeks, but other places all over Houston were okay, so he just did a lot of visiting. :-)

Once the storm passes through if the conditions stay miserable for awhile we can all head out. I just hope the trees stay put. I'm not worried about the roof unless we get a tornado but I am worried about some of the trees.

I'm watching the mayor of Galveston now and she's cracking me up. Tough bird.

Houston is my hometown. I've seen the devastation that Hurricane Alicia caused. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Alicia I'm afraid Ike will be worse. (Cindy, it when it made landfall it was a Catagory 3.) Not only do they cause surges, flooding, etc., they also cause spinoff twisters.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Southeast Texas. My family now lives in the Spring/Conroe area which is up the 1-45 corridor. (and they worry about me living in earthquake land!)

Take good care!

Hi IG & welcome as a poster... GREAT 1st POST!

people do not realize that authorities' requests to write your social security number on your arm is serious....... but of course it will be beneficial only if your body is recovered!

if you are on coastal alabam, please be safe yourself..... the flooding, even into florida is astounding this soon.

Yes, she is.

These pine trees around here bother me.

My sis lives 1.5 miles away and they have a generator so if worse comes to worse I can go over there and shower, etc.

Kato a generator won't help with water unless they have their own water pump, but you could blow your hair dry :) Stay safe!!!!!

I don't know about pics but they showed them on TV. This one chick was holding a huge bottle and justa guzzlin' straight from it. You might find some video on FOX since that is where I saw it. Or check KTRK, KPRC or KHOU (local Houston stations)

I just saw a presser with the mayor and the city manager of Galviston. They said they are still there and will ride out the storm, I think they are in a hotel . Reporters are also staying there. The city manager and mayor are reiterating thatey will be out picking up people until 9 PM..at that time they will be shutting down to not put their people in harms way. They are still evacuating Galvaston.. they say they think about 40 % of the people on Galviston Island did not evacuate! They are using high tech dump trucks to come rescue people, as well as boats and helio but this is going to be bad.

Please don't get mad at me folks but I'm starting to think this a bunch of bullchit to scare us. I'm already going stir crazy! I might go see if there is a *buck's open.

Did anyone else see that hotel where the media is staying? I think I'd have to pass!! I hope they make it out alive.

Well, you could heat up on some water on a propane or gas stove! Although I'll take a cold shower over no a/c...

A lot of people in the coastal communities didn't want to evacuate because they went through hell with Rita. All the people from Katy to the Woodlands were hyped and hysteria-ed into evacuating by the authorities when there was no need, and the people who really need to get away were stuck for 20 hours or so crawling along the roads--not even getting out of Houston in some cases. It seems like that was handled a lot better this time but some of those people just refused to go based on that experience.

I hope that doesn't turn out be a deadly decision for some of them.

I saw some people in Kemah who thought they were on the high end, but basically everything along the coast is sea level! There's no "high end!" Houston is 50 feet above sea level but those communities are beachfront.
