Are they interested in leaving? There are numbers we can give you that they can call and get assistance. If not, Germain Arena may still be accepting people.

It is getting late and I believe all the shelters in the area are closing by 8:00 tonight.

No, I believe they are intent on riding it out. Not what I'd choose, but then, I'm not from hurricane parts and have more fear than experience, personally.

But thanks for posting. :)

FL Governor Scott is giving a presser.

Areas in Tampa are expected to get a storm surge of between 5-8 feet.

I hope everyone in the evacuation zones has left. 5-8 feet storm surge will drown everyone in its path. Sandbags won't keep the water out of homes - I don't know why everyone piles up sandbags every time a hurricane comes. We were in a flood years ago - sandbags were useless.

I grasped that it was big then calmed when it looked like it was moving - but I had no clue that the actual EYEWALL part is over the entire state

it boggles ones brain

for a million people to be without power already is also numbing

I really think that the next one while it is far out in Atlantic they should try some missles and see if it will interrupt the water uptake

there is nothing to lose at this point

I am talking about targeting right below the eye in the ocean not into the bands

all the way around it slowing down is bad, it slows the time rescue people can come out it slows the times people can clear roads from debris so lineman can get out

in charlie it was not connecting stuff again power poles were gone all over the place

the huge towers that carried carry the main feeder lines direct from the source were blown down

cell phone communications will be effed up as those towers fall

salt water intrusion wrecks everything in Sandy that was a huge mess

Ike had long power issues

lineman are still trying to restring Houston

I think they may need aircraft carriers around the state.

I think they are going to have to do supply air drops

The federal govt should come up with some sort of agreement with grocery chains to where govt can come in and take the food and distribute it its already here at least

Here in FL after Charlie they did learn a lot about the importance of pre staging - which I do not think Houston did very good with

Some good information on how hurricanes - also called tropical cyclones - are formed:

On a lighter note, to keep spirits up:

Off topic - The lady signing ASL on the Governor's presser is very expressive. I love watching her facial expressions as she emphasizes certain phrases. I think ASL is a beautiful language.

Cariis - is your freezer full of your homemade ice bags? Do you have enough batteries for your fans?

My step brother lives in Ft Myers, in the red storm surge area of 12'. Got out of the hospital less than a wk ago with leg arterial transplants and skin grafts. He's not allowed to drive yet. He'll be hunkering down with a friend who is only in the yellow surge area of 3'.
The problem is Miami and the east coast had about 4 days to evacuate and get ready. The west coast had less than 2 days with the shift.

15 feet of storm surge possible in SW FL.

15 feet is much higher than a single story home - is halfway up the second story of 2-story homes.

Hoping all our FL members & their fur-babies stay safe! You're all in my thoughts and prayers.

It is and it's really fun too! I've made sure that all of my kids and grands know finger spelling and basic signs since before they could talk. My oldest took it farther and is an asl interpreter.

This is wild looking! Never seen anything like this. Can't figure out if they're wrapped in paper or some type of plastic?

Just imagine the logistics of trying to hold a chicken still long enough in order to do this. The looks of their faces too, oh my gosh.

Guess it's true what they say. Desperate measures...

Not only is it a clear case of cruelty to animals, but that is just dangerous. What if they get loose in the car while driving? Hopefully law enforcement has already been notified. People sure do like to post pictures of themselves doing stupid and illegal things.
