Collier County (Naples, Marco Island area) Shelters almost at capacity!
THIS AREA IS EXPECTED TO GET UP TO 15 FEET STORM SURGE

Update, 10 p.m.

Only one shelter is now open that accepts evacuees with or without pets, at Gulf Coast High School, 7878 Shark Way off Immokalee Road. Pets must be in containers and have their own food and water; they will be stored in a room separate from evacuees, who will be in the gym. Evacuees must bring food, water, flashlights and bedding.

Gulf Coast has opened up its auditorium to fit more evacuees. There’s no room for cots, sleeping bags, but there is space for 400 to 450 more people to sit in the auditorium.

All shelters are full, leaving the Gulf Coast High auditorium the only open shelter in Collier County.

"This is a life-threatening situation"

Even staying in Key West the chickens are apparently in a safer place than they would have been running free, and they didn't have to ride far in the car. The few that he saved will form a foundation for a new flock of wild chickens, since the hundreds left outside will likely die.

Regarding legality vs humanitarian actions, I'm furious about the people who left their family pets behind...dogs and cats running free or tied to trees (certain death)...and I'm sure everyone on this thread is too. It's felony animal cruelty, but even if not illegal, it's certainly wrong. The message that it's OK to abandon animals is the one I hope people don't get. I really don't think there will be a sudden increase in capturing wild animals just based on this man's rescuing a few wild chickens. He did a kind deed and it's a heartwarming story IMO. :heartbeat: I hope the people who left their pets behind will feel guilty when they read it.

I cannot imagine leaving my pet under those conditions. I have an 18 MO black cat (Bubba) and I love him dearly. Where I go, he goes. As he sits in my lap. He's confused by all the patio furniture in the living room.

Rescuing pets is one thing, wild animals is another. As the other story I posted said, they do not find a lot of dead wildlife after hurricanes. Wild animals especially fowl can handle hurricanes just fine. As soon as the winds die down the birds will be out in full force. The guy's actions were extremely misguided and also illegal. I doubt he will be charged, but i would not be disappointed if he was.

Are you freaking kidding me?!?!

:stormingmad:

Im tellin ya, if my baby dog can't go, I won't go. It'll be ok, we'll just go down together. But that's just me. I of course don't have dependent children, and certainly don't advocate parents letting their children die in a hurricane, but Somehow I'd find a way to take my fur boy with me, hell or high water. Well, he is a children to me.

When I hear a live cam feed with sound of the Irma winds - it reminds me of a sub-alpine back country camping trip my partner & I took years ago in Washington State. Stupid us - we didn't check the mountain weather forecast before we set out.

We enjoyed a rigorous, yet beautiful, hike up Bald Mountain to Cutthroat Lakes and set up camp with our brand new tent. The next day, we explored the trails, took in the breathtaking scenery, and picked wild blueberries.

Late on the second day on the mountain, heavy rain clouds gathered overhead & it started sprinkling, so we tucked ourselves inside our sleeping bags and were contentedly reading our paperback novels, when we suddenly heard an eerie sound. We looked at each other in disbelief and terror. It was the wind roaring up & over the mountain like a freight train. "This can't be good" we said, bracing ourselves for what was apparently coming.

Throughout the night, we were assaulted by death-defying winds with only our tent between us and the elements.

Needless to say, after the first onslaught, we forgot about reading our paperback novels. The powerful wind gusts kept coming, hour after hour all night long - one terrifying freight train after another, threatening to derail the entire mountaintop.

Each time the wind swept over us, our tent flattened a mere inch or two above our faces - rattling & rippling beneath the currents like a demon-possessed sheet, portending inevitable doom. After each gust passed, our tent popped right back up to its original form and we burst out with incredulous, maniacal laughter that it hadn't been ripped to shreds.

I remember taking a mental inventory of where I had seen any tall trees standing. Thankfully, since we were at subalpine altitude, there weren't many tall trees. I was terrified of a tree being uprooted and crushing us.

We were exhausted when morning finally arrived and when the winds finally receded. We broke camp faster than I've ever broke camp in my life and hi-tailed it outta there.

When we arrived back home, we learned that some other hikers had been tragically killed on another mountain during the same wind storm. A tree had fallen on them. My partner and I were very saddened by the news - especially since we had narrowly escaped death ourselves.

I'll always remember that truly frightening freight-train sound of the wind - fearing at the time that I may not survive to tell the tale.

Hearing that sound on the live-cam of Hurricane Irma in Key West reminded me of that harrowing night.

I pray that everyone in Irma's path survives - humans and animals alike.

Mike Theiss, a Storm Tracker, said on TWC by phone just now that when the storm passes, he will check on the Hemingway House caretakers and the cats.

He also mentioned some people riding the storm out on their boats?!? :gaah:

You should have thrown the furniture in the pool!

tosses pool furniture in the pool Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017 so it doesn't fly around during the impending hurricane.
