[FONT=&amp]Actually, things are progressing a little slower than indicated earlier... more like 10p to midnight. Cat 1 wind conditions, but big surge.

I have a question for my wise WS peeps:
Irma has been downgraded to category 2. Is it likely to stay a 2 or can it go back up to 3 or 4?
Hi K....IMO, happy to say, quite impossible for it to go back to a 3 or 4. The left side of the storm is weakening do to wind shear, so wind levels have tapered off. The storm will stay primarily on land. If it happens to veer off land, the water in the Gulf is cooler than the Caribbean.

South GA can possibly experience cat1 or cat2 wind gusts, so very important to stay vigilant and prepared.

Surge and Inundation will continue to plague Florida for the next couple of days.... serious, life threatening, and destructive.

Power keeps threatening to go off again and I'm having Internet connectivity issues.

Am turning in for the night.

Stay safe, everyone in FL!

Hey Sees- let us know how the screen works. Always looking for better ideas. Take care and hang in there.

Yes, Henry2326 – I’ll provide an update later tomorrow on the CRIMSAFE screens withstanding the wind. Although, it appears there won’t be a significant test if we get hit by only a CAT 1 or 2. I’ll take CAT 1 with the eye staying on the east side of Tampa.
:sunshine:
We didn’t get the screens for protection from criminals. We got them to withstand dog paws as we got weary of changing out the cheap sliding screen doors. We’ve had the CRIMSAFE screens about 6 years and we are 100% pleased.

I'm in Ocala and we've had steady rain. By my apartment we have a retention pond that is normally dry. It's now almost to our hallway. Looks like a lake. We're on the bottom floor. I'm just glad that we got some sandbags and have renters insurance. I've read that 10pm is when things will pick up and around 2am is when the craziness will really start. Our local paper is free for the duration of the storm. www.Ocala.com

Stay safe everyone!

Police, public safety services suspended in Sarasota County:

All police, fire and public safety services suspended in Sarasota County

Emergency Operations Chief Ed McCrane tells residents:

Don't come out of your house until the sun is up and you can clearly see the weather outside.

McCrane noted that 911 calls would be prioritized, but all police, fire and public safety personnel is suspended because of sustained winds of 45 mph (the county may see winds of 75-90 mph). The community started to lose power, McCrane said, and he urged residents to "remember the safe room," or the safest part of the house.

ETA: St. Petersburg just halted police and fire support, too.

Your very welcome, Spellbound....glad to be a part of the group and to share info. Living in Charleston, I'm quite vigilant in understanding the facts about storms so my family can make the best decision to stay or go.

Still watching and hope our Florida/Georgia friends are safe and prepared.

I was so worried this would happen, if they weren't bashed up against the shore.
No idea if these are the same manatees or not.

So this is normal to you guys? The rest of the world is saying WTF!!

It is normal only with something like Irma, however, it is not something that happens frequently. I heard a meteorologist explain that he'd learned of it in school but it was one of those things you never think you'll witness. Irma has been unique in almost every way, (but, IANA meteorologist).

Does anyone know how far the storm surge came into Old Naples?

There are cameras all over the world on EarthCam. So neat.
There are also some in Fort Meyers and St Petersburg (Florida AND Russia.)
But since it's getting dark it won't be easy to see much.
