NHC 8:00 Update: very similar to last update.

KEY MESSAGES:
1. Life-threatening wind and storm surge from Irma will continue in the Florida Keys and southwestern Florida and spread into central and northwestern Florida tonight and Monday.
2. There is imminent danger of life-threatening storm surge flooding along much of the Florida west coast, including the Florida Keys, where a Storm Surge Warning is in effect. The threat of catastrophic storm surge flooding is highest along the southwest coast of Florida, where 10 to 15 feet of inundation above ground level is expected. This is a life-threatening situation.
3. Irma will bring life-threatening wind impacts to much of Florida regardless of the exact track of the center. Wind hazards from Irma are also expected to spread northward through Georgia and into portions of Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Does anyone know how far the storm surge came into Old Naples?

No idea. I've seen some videos but don't know if it's Old Naples or not... all the Naples cams I can find are still down.

Hi K- Pinellas County had mandatory evacuation of zones A and B. The link below provides shelters in Dunedin. Did your family evacuate? Do they live in the zones?

I can understand why you are worried.

They are in the mandatory evacuation zone, and they stayed in their house!
I do not understand why they did not go to a shelter at least.

We keep hoping and praying Irma breaks up and weakens even more before entering South Georgia. The worst thing for us will be the high winds and spinning off tornadoes. With it continuing to rain all day today the huge limbs of the giant Pecans and Oaks will already be saturated and very heavy from rainwater making them prone to be uprooted or have huge limbs crashing down everywhere. Some of the limbs on our Oaks are thicker around than a large Pine.

Hubby finally made it home and much earlier than his Jacksonville trip last Friday. He said there wasn't much traffic on the road whether it was north or south bound except for first responders. I hope this means that everyone who evacuated has made it to their final destination.

Even though our family has been glue to all the updates for days now.. whether watching news channels or getting update alerts on our smartphones, I have felt so connected when I come here to read the updates given by our beloved posters, Henry, Popsicle,Jersey Girl, and others who have done a great service for all of us by keeping us informed and updated. I thank you all so much.

My heart breaks for my Floridian neighbors and I am continuing to pray for all of you. It is so scary that the storm surges will come around 11pm when it is so dark and many without power. May you all be safe along with all of your family members, friends, and precious pets.

My husband has an aunt/uncle and nephew who lives in Palm Harbor. We talked with them this morning and they said they have decided to stay. Their home was built in 2012 so hopefully its strong and they will come out okay.

In addition, here is the surge map from NOAA, and if Google pointed it out correctly, Old Naples is sitting out in the middle of the yellow section on the right. A very dangerous situation....

A SWAT operation was reportedly underway in Orange County Sunday as looters were attempting to steal guns from a sporting goods store.

This might help some...this is NOAA's surge map based on models, so not a guarantee. Take a look and see if you find their location. It it's not in a colored area, then things are better. If it is in a colored space, they need to consider quickly going to a shelter. Also, a one story house might be a critical situation. Hope this helps.

Hi Ocean- my folks live in Valdosta. I'm hoping at the most a cat1 for you all, but we shall see if Irma's eye wall holds up despite the odds.

Not sure if this will be helpful, but it's NOAA's surge map for Palm Harbor. Maybe you can spot where they live and see if it's in the colored critical area or not. Hoping for the best.
