Hurricane Irma - #3

Regardless of our being without power for pretty much a full week now - I am just glad my nightmare of waking up, with a roof blown off, and a displaced Burmese python crawling all over my face did not become reality.

Gah.

Update:

Day 6 (Friday, September 15) with no power. It's not bad at night with the windows open and a cool breeze while falling asleep. Daytime is another story. I have seen several FPL trucks in the nearby area so maybe that is a good sign.

Tonight DH and I went out for Chinese take-out down the street on Swift Rd (terrific food) and spotted an FPL truck. Tried to get DH to pull over so I could ask the guys in the truck about our apartment but he said no. Thinks I just wanted to talk to the cute FPL dude. lol

Well, if there is no power between now and tomorrow I will have to bring the laptop to the library to get some work done and borrow their electricity.

Thanks for the update, but am so sorry you're going through all this, MaryG12. Hate this for you! I am so hoping that you get your power back really soon...

Please keep us posted. Fingers crossed for you!

Gah.

Heck yeah, what a horrible nightmare THAT would have been! How terrible.

I know you're hoping you're through the worst of it. We're hoping that for you too. Hang in there! Wish so badly I could give you some of my electricity...

Utility trucks from Des Moines, Iowa got my power back on yesterday & cable came on today.

I gave those handsome (but fair-skinned) Iowans a bottle of Waterbabies sunscreen & recommended they apply generously.

Great guys & they said it was hot down here in Palm Beach, FL ! They weren't used to it but had plenty of water!

Our heros!

Checking in. I'm okay. I evacuated to my relatives in South Carolina. Ended up getting a really bad ear infection so I was out of commission for the last few days. Thank you for checking up on all of us affected. Hopefully, we'll hear from the other 5 that haven't been accounted for. I just heard from one of my friends in key west who refused to evacuate. I'm happy he's okay and I plan on going down once people are allowed back to help him rebuild. Luckily, my mother and brother made it through the storm okay and the damage was minimal. A lot of my friends in key west and Miami weren't as lucky.

glad you were blue to check in and that all seems OK for you, mom, and brother. Hope you are feeling better now ... ear infections hurt! Keep us posted occasionally on the rebuilding and cleanup efforts.

My mothers power remains out. I talked to her today. She acts fine. She has been wiht my sister the whole time.

She is going down near her house in a
hotel. I did not say anything to her but she is right on the ocean, I fear the smell is going to be hideous.

For those not here this time of year is
gruesome - I cant imagine the odors.

I would think the padding would need to be taken out??

What were others exp with smell after having residence in the FL heat and humidity for days??

African train coming....invest 97 May be a tropical storm tonight but should curve North. Invest 96 is the one to watch.
As we experienced, it's way too early to predict.

Now this is some amazing sleuthing my dear!!

A+ superior work!!!

Most of Dunedin is back on. If anyone needs me to try to scope out an area I can do so later today. Most if not all street lights are back on.

I think we skew older - but there were these little things that had lines that plugged into the wall. They would ring when someone called !!

We knew them as phones!

If anyone has a landline that wants to
know if there power has come back on dial.

I tried my mother today at her house and got a odd recording so I knew hers was not on and called her at my sisters.

It says like this number cant take calls or something

PS They are also known as land lines

Do some of you know we had things things that were red , looked like a coffin on its end and we walked in and made a call after inserting a coin!!

They were called telephone booths - see all the things you younger folk are missing !!!!

Also famous for being Supermans dressing room!!

he he

Jax49: Thanks for sharing that!

ETA: Posted it to Facebook.

Totally hysterical looks like a SNL skit!!!

Interestingly she sure looks like she knows exactly what she is doing!!

I would be legless on my first try or seen with my head burrowed into some log with my feet handing out!!

The smell was not pleasing but, outside was worse. I'm on the intercostal between mangroves and you could smell dead wildlife. Sad
My squirrels made it! Made me so happy to hear them yelling at my cat.

Michigan native who rode out Hurricane Irma in Key West shares update after storm

KEY WEST, Fla. - Laree Sparks, a former Michigander who now lives in Key West, decided to ride out Hurricane Irma.

"We always gamble with this because it's so hard to get out," she said.

Sparks has lived in downtown Key West for eight years. She feels grateful because*Key West wasn't hit as hard by Irma as it was widely expected to be.

Sparks said a lot of the damage in Key West was to roofs.

Islands east of Key West weren't so lucky, however. Others, such as Marathon Key and Big Pine Key, sustained heavier damage. The damage in the other Keys prevented those who stayed in Key West from leaving once Irma hit...

My evacuee group from Dunedin has power as of last night according to her neighbors! 3 adults, 2 dogs, 4 cats headed back tomorrow.

The friends and neighbors went over and cleaned out the refrigerator, cleaned up the lawn, and turned on the ac!

One of the group is scheduled for major surgery Monday, so hopefully that will go as scheduled as blood tests readying for the surgery were done up here while evacuated.

ETA: Corrected surgery date to Monday (vs. tomorrow)

Now this is some amazing sleuthing my dear!!

A+ superior work!!!

The thanks button wasn't nearly enough. You're so right! Spellbound has done an amazing job keeping up with everyone.

Thank you again Spellbound, for putting your heart and soul into helping those in Irma's path...
